BLOHM was founded in 1924 in Hamburg, Germany, by Robert Blohm, originally as a factory for measuring instruments and apparatus construction. Across its 100-year history the company has developed legendary products including the 1937 WURI II machine tool, the 1948 ball-guideway flat grinder, and the 1993 PLANOMAT platform that defined modern surface and profile grinding. BLOHM was acquired by Körber AG in 1993 as part of the Körber Schleifring group, which was renamed the UNITED GRINDING Group in 2013; the BLOHM and JUNG brands merged into Blohm Jung GmbH in 2008. Today BLOHM operates a development and production facility in Hamburg and a technology and service center in Göppingen, with more than 15,000 machines delivered worldwide. As part of UNITED GRINDING's Surface and Profile technology group (alongside Mägerle and Jung), BLOHM is supported in North America by UNITED GRINDING North America in Miamisburg, Ohio, providing sales, service, parts, applications support, training, and machine rebuilds for customers across the US, Canada, and Mexico.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Blohm

Verify the spindle and motion system. Blohm grinding spindles range from 15 kW on smaller PLANOMAT machines to 24.5 kW or higher on production PROFIMAT and PROKOS platforms. Test spindle runout, listen for bearing noise across the speed range, and check thermal stability after warm-up. Inspect precision linear guideways, 1-micron linear scales, AC servo drives, and ball screws for backlash.

Test the magnetic chuck, dressing system, and coolant filtration. Check the chuck face for wear, scoring, or demagnetization. Cycle through dressing attachments (rotary diamond, tilting profile, circumferential) and inspect diamond inserts. Coolant filtration is critical on Blohm machines because of high metal removal rates, so inspect the filter unit, oil mist extractor, and coolant tank.

Confirm Siemens 840D and BLOHM EasyProfile control state. Most current Blohm machines run a Siemens 840D solution line CNC with the proprietary BLOHM EasyProfile interface. Confirm the control is operational, all axes calibrate cleanly, and any EasyProfile or GripsProfile upgrade packages are licensed and transferable. On PROKOS XT, verify rotary or trunnion axes, ATC tool stations, and milling-spindle accessories.

Blohm Surface and Profile Grinding Series

PLANOMAT XT & PLANOMAT HP (Universal Surface & Profile)

The PLANOMAT family is Blohm's universal surface and profile platform, available in six grinding ranges from 400 x 800 mm to 600 x 2,000 mm with spindle drives from 15 to 24.5 kW. The current PLANOMAT XT offers higher axis speeds, greater acceleration, and increased rigidity over the predecessor PLANOMAT HP; both run BLOHM EasyProfile control. A PLANOMAT XT ESSENTIAL variant covers smaller workpieces. The PLANOMAT also supports a broaching configuration for turbine, steering, and aerospace broach grinding.

PROFIMAT MT, MC, RT & XT (Production & Creep Feed)

The PROFIMAT MT is Blohm's high-volume creep feed platform for turbine blade and aerospace work. The PROFIMAT MC is a compact traveling-column grinder (approximately 2,000 mm wide). The PROFIMAT RT handles large-lot batch production. The PROFIMAT XT is the latest generation with optimized rigidity and dynamics. All PROFIMAT models share BLOHM EasyProfile control and dressing systems.

PROKOS XT (5-Axis Combination Grinding Center)

The PROKOS XT is Blohm's 5-axis surface and profile grinding center, combining grinding with milling and drilling in a single setup. It supports up to 24 ATC tool positions for tools to 300 mm in diameter, ideal for complex turbine, aerospace, and tool-and-die work.

What CNC control does Blohm use?

Most current Blohm machines run a Siemens 840D solution line CNC with the proprietary BLOHM EasyProfile touchscreen interface developed by Blohm Jung in cooperation with Siemens. The PLANOMAT also supports GripsProfile software for grinding wheel contour profiling. Older machines use earlier Siemens 840D variants or legacy controls.

What should I inspect before buying a used Blohm?

Focus on the grinding spindle (runout, bearings, thermal stability), precision linear guideways and 1-micron scales, magnetic chuck condition, dressing attachments, and coolant filtration. Verify the Siemens 840D / BLOHM EasyProfile control is operational and software licenses transfer. On PROKOS XT, verify 5-axis function and ATC.

Which Blohm models hold their value best?

The PLANOMAT HP, PLANOMAT XT, PROFIMAT MC, PROFIMAT RT, and PROKOS XT hold the strongest residual values. Legacy HFS, Hanseat, and PLANOMAT 412 retain value for shops needing manual or semi-automatic surface grinding. Call (844) 478-8181 for current valuations.
