No machine tool brand is more recognizable in American manufacturing than Bridgeport. Founded in 1938 by Rudolph Bannow and Magnus Wahlstrom in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the company introduced the turret-style vertical milling machine that would become the standard in machine shops worldwide — so universally adopted that "Bridgeport" became the generic term for any vertical knee mill, regardless of manufacturer. Over 330,000 Series I mills were produced by 1996 alone.

When Bridgeport's parent company encountered financial difficulties in 2002, Hardinge, Inc. of Elmira, New York acquired the Bridgeport brand and resumed US production of the Series I and EZPLUS CNC mills — keeping the iconic machine alive for over two decades of continued American manufacturing. In 2023, Bridgeport was acquired by InCompass (a TJM Capital Partners platform company), which continues production today. This means that used Bridgeport mills on the market today may have been manufactured in either the original Bridgeport, Connecticut plant or the Hardinge facility in Elmira, New York — both producing machines to the same legendary standard.

Bridgeport Manual Knee Mills

The Bridgeport Series I is the most widely used manual milling machine in the world — a versatile vertical knee mill with a turret-style head that swivels and tilts for drilling, boring, milling, and facing operations. Available with R8 spindle taper, variable-speed heads (step pulley or Vari-Speed), and table sizes of 9" × 42" or 9" × 48". The larger Series II delivers 4 HP with heavier construction for more demanding work.

Bridgeport CNC Mills & Machining Centers

Bridgeport's CNC lineup includes the EZ-Trak and EZPLUS conversational CNC knee mills (no G-code required), Boss-series CNC knee mills, Torq-Cut VMCs with CAT 40 spindles and automatic tool changers, Discovery-series production VMCs, and GX-series high-speed machining centers with Fanuc controls and spindle speeds up to 10,000 RPM.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Bridgeport

Bridgeport mills have been produced since 1938, meaning used machines span nearly nine decades. The good news is that Bridgeports were built to last — well-maintained machines from the 1960s still deliver excellent accuracy. Here's what to inspect.

Quill, spindle, and bearings. Pull the quill through its full travel and check for smooth operation and lateral play. Measure spindle runout in the R8 collet — under 0.001" TIR is acceptable, under 0.0005" is excellent. Listen for bearing noise at all speeds. On Vari-Speed heads, verify smooth speed changes across the full range.

Knee, saddle, and table. Check the table surface for wear, scoring, or T-slot damage. Run the knee up and down — it should move smoothly without binding. Test saddle and table for proper gibs adjustment and backlash. On CNC models, test all axis drives and measure backlash and repeatability.

Head type and overall condition. Identify the head — J-head (most common, 1–2 HP), 2J (Vari-Speed), or Series II (4 HP). Variable-speed heads are preferred over step-pulley models. Check the ram-on-turret mounting for tightness. On EZ-Trak and Boss CNC models, verify the control boots properly and all programming functions work.

Bridgeport Manual Mill Model Guide

Series I Standard — The Icon

The most widely produced milling machine in the world — over 330,000 built by 1996. Features R8 spindle taper, turret-style head with 360° swivel and tilt, knee-and-column construction, and 9" × 42" or 9" × 48" tables. Head variants include the J head (most common), 2J (1.5 HP Vari-Speed), 2J2 (2 HP Vari-Speed), and older step-pulley models. Vari-Speed heads are strongly preferred on the used market for their continuously variable speed control. Common accessories that add value include power table feeds, digital readouts (DROs), collet sets, and rotary tables. The Series I is the standard training machine in trade schools and vocational programs nationwide, ensuring a steady pipeline of operators who know how to run them.

Series II — Heavy Duty

Introduced in 1970, the Series II delivers 4 HP variable speed with a larger column and base for increased rigidity. Designed for heavier milling that exceeds the Series I's capability. Less common but sought after by shops needing more power from a knee mill platform.

Bridgeport CNC Knee Mills

EZ-Trak and EZPLUS

Bridgeport's conversational CNC knee mill — built on the Series I/II platform with servo axes and touchscreen control. No G-code required. Available in 2-axis and 3-axis. Models include DX, DXII, SX, SXP, SXPE. One of the most popular CNC knee mills ever produced — ideal for short runs and shops transitioning from manual to CNC.

Boss, Interact & V2XT

The Boss series (Boss 5–12) and Interact I/II (Heidenhain TNC control) are earlier CNC knee mills. The V2XT uses the DX-32 control. While these older controls are less intuitive than EZ-Trak, all are commonly retrofitted with modern CNC controls, extending their useful life significantly.

Bridgeport CNC Machining Centers

Torq-Cut, Discovery & GX Series

The Torq-Cut 22/30 are compact VMCs with CAT 40 spindles, 7.5–10 HP, 22–30" X travel, 20-position ATC, and DX-32 controls — well-suited for tool rooms and prototyping. The Discovery series (308, 408, 510, 710, 760, 1000) are larger production VMCs with expanded travels, higher tool capacity, and more powerful spindles for heavier cutting. The GX series (GX 480, GX 710) represents Bridgeport's latest generation with Fanuc controls and spindle speeds to 10,000 RPM — these machines compete with entry-level Japanese VMCs while carrying the Bridgeport name and domestic service network.

How to Sell Your Used Bridgeport

Bridgeport mills are among the most liquid assets in the used machine tool market. Universal name recognition and ongoing demand from job shops, trade schools, and maintenance departments create consistent resale value — particularly for Series I mills with Vari-Speed heads and DROs, and EZ-Trak CNC mills with functioning controls.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Bridgeport Machines

Are used Bridgeport mills still worth buying?

Absolutely. The Series I remains one of the most versatile machines in any shop. Well-maintained examples deliver excellent accuracy for toolroom work, prototyping, and short-run production. The massive aftermarket ecosystem means any part can be sourced quickly.

What is the difference between a Series I and Series II?

The Series I is the standard model with 1–2 HP variable-speed head and R8 taper. The Series II is larger with a 4 HP head for heavier milling. Both use knee-and-column construction with turret-style heads.

What is a Bridgeport EZ-Trak?

The EZ-Trak is Bridgeport's conversational CNC knee mill. Operators program part geometry through a touchscreen without G-code. Available in 2-axis and 3-axis configurations, it bridges the gap between manual milling and full CNC — ideal for short runs and prototyping.

Can older Bridgeport CNC controls be upgraded?

Yes. Boss, V2XT, DX-32, and Interact controls are commonly retrofitted with modern CNC systems. These retrofits reuse existing servo motors and mechanicals while adding modern controls, dramatically improving capability and ease of use.

What should I inspect on a used Bridgeport?

Prioritize spindle runout (under 0.001" TIR), quill smoothness, knee and saddle travel, table surface condition, head type (Vari-Speed preferred), and overall casting condition. On CNC models, verify all axis drives and control operation.

What Bridgeport models hold their value best?

Series I mills with Vari-Speed heads and DROs hold value well due to universal demand. EZ-Trak CNC knee mills with functioning controls command strong pricing. Torq-Cut and GX-series VMCs retain value as affordable CNC entry points. Call (844) 478-8181 for current valuations.
