What to Look for When Buying a Used Huron
Huron machines are premium French-built mills for high-speed, high-precision aerospace, mold and die, and defense work. Build quality is excellent, but thorough inspection and control review are essential.
Inspect the spindle and tool interface. Modern Huron 5-axis and bridge machines use HSK-A63 spindles (K2X Five, K3X Five, standard KX Large) or HSK-A100 (heavy KX Large, KX 300, larger KXG), typically from Kessler, GMN, Fischer, or IBAG. Older MU, SXB, and LV bed-type Hurons use ISO 50. Measure radial runout with a certified HSK test arbor, verify drawbar clamp force, and inspect the taper and flange face for fretting. HSK tapers cannot be lapped, so damage requires a spindle rebuild. Request machine hours, spindle hours, and crash history. On high-speed spindles, check the chiller and TSC rotary union: a leaking union is a rapid-death scenario.
Verify 5-axis geometry and alignment. K2X Five and K3X Five use A-plus-C trunnion cradle tables; KX Large and KXG use continuous swivel heads. Request Renishaw QC20-W ballbar results per ISO 230-4 and a current KinematicsOpt or CYCLE996 pivot-point calibration report. On bridge and gantry machines, verify column squareness with a laser interferometer and inspect portal junctions for settlement cracks.
Identify the control platform. Current production uses Heidenhain TNC 640. iTNC 530 is most common on used 2005-to-2018 machines. Siemens 840D powerline is spare-part-only; 840D solution line was discontinued October 2024. Retrofit paths to TNC 640, TNC7, and SINUMERIK ONE are available.
Huron 3-Axis Machining Centers
KX Monoblock VMC Series
The KX series (KX 8, KX 10, KX 15, KX 20, KX 30) is a fixed-portal monoblock 3-axis VMC family for mold work, cutting tools, and aerospace structural parts. X travels run from 700 mm on the KX 8 to 1,800 mm on the KX 30, with HSK-A63 spindles at 15,000 to 18,000 rpm. KX 15 and KX 20 are the most widely traded 3-axis Hurons in North America.
VX C-Frame VMC Series
The VX series (VX 8, VX 10, VX 12, VX 15, VX 18) is Huron's C-frame, moving-table 3-axis family for general workshop and small-to-medium-series production. ISO 40 tooling and 6,000-to-10,000 rpm spindles are typical. VX 12 and VX 15 appear most often on the secondary market.
Huron 5-Axis & Bridge Mills
K2X Five and K3X Five Series
The K2X Five series (K2X 5, K2X 8, K2X 10, K2X 15, K2X 20 Five) is Huron's flagship 5-axis trunnion platform, with a fixed portal over a continuous A-plus-C rotary table. The K3X 8 Five adds a reinforced monoblock bed and higher-dynamics portal. HSK-A63 electrospindles to 24,000 rpm and 20-to-40-tool ATCs are standard.
KX Large Bridge Mills
The KX Large series (KX 50 M, KX 50 L, KX 200, KX 300) delivers fixed-portal double-column 5-axis bridge machining with continuous swivel heads. Envelopes scale from 2,000 x 1,700 x 900 mm on the KX 50 M to 4,080 x 2,180 x 1,550 mm on the KX 300, with capacities to 20 tonnes.
KXG Gantry Series
The KXG series (KXG 30-15, 45-14, 45-15, 45-23, 45-25, 60-23, 60-25, 90-23) covers very large moving-gantry 5-axis work with HSK-A100 options, table loads to 52,000 kg, and Heidenhain TNC 640. KXG-P uses rack-and-pinion drives; KXG-L uses linear motors.
Huron Mill-Turn & Heavy Portal
The MX series (MX 8, 10, 11, 12, 16, 20) is Huron's mobile-column 5-axis family in M (milling) and MT (mill-turn) configurations. The NX series (NX 40, NX 60, NX 70) covers heavy 3-axis portal work with BT50 tooling and table loads to 10 tonnes. Legacy MU, SXB, GXD, EX-C, and LV Hurons still appear on the used market.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Huron Machines
Is Huron still in business?
Yes. Huron-Graffenstaden SAS is a subsidiary of Jyoti CNC Automation Ltd. (acquired 2007) and builds machines at the Eschau plant near Strasbourg, with a new Eschau II facility opened in 2025.
Is "Huron Graffenstaden" the same as "Huron"?
Yes. Huron-Graffenstaden SAS is the full legal name. "Huron" is the commercial brand, formed in 1974 by merging Graffenstaden (1837) and Huré (c.1873).
What CNC control does Huron use?
Current production uses Heidenhain TNC 640. iTNC 530 is most common on used 2005-to-2018 machines. Siemens 840D powerline and solution line are end-of-life.
Are used Huron machines reliable?
Yes. Huron is a premium European builder with over 150 years of engineering heritage. Maintained Hurons routinely run 20-plus years in aerospace and mold production.
What Huron models hold their value best?
K2X Five and K3X 8 Five trunnion 5-axis centers, followed by KX Large bridge mills and KXG gantries on current controls. Call (844) 478-8181 for valuations.
What is the difference between a KX and a K2X Huron?
KX is the 3-axis fixed-portal monoblock VMC family (KX 8 to KX 30) plus the KX Large bridge-mill family. K2X Five is the 5-axis version over a continuous A-plus-C trunnion cradle.
Can I still get parts for legacy Huron machines?
Yes. Huron France, Huron Fräsmaschinen GmbH in Germany, and Huron Canada support legacy machines. Spindle rebuilds and control retrofits are available through OEMs and independents.
