Komo is the workhorse choice for woodworking, cabinetry, plastics, aerospace composites, and millwork shops running high-speed American iron.

Komo Machine, Inc. was founded in 1966 in St. Cloud, Minnesota by William Koska and George Molus, the "Ko" and "Mo" behind the name. Both men were seasoned machinists and engineers who launched the company as a general metalworking shop producing automated production-line machines for major appliance manufacturers. By 1980, Komo was the largest US builder of automated urethane process machines for the appliance industry. The company entered CNC machining in the early 1980s, introduced its CNC Vertical Machining Center line in 1984, and expanded into high-speed multi-axis CNC routers for wood and plastics shortly thereafter. Komo relocated from St. Cloud to Sauk Rapids, Minnesota in 1987 to a 175,000 square foot facility. Komo was acquired by PMC Global Inc. (Sun Valley, California) in 1999 and remains a PMC subsidiary. Today Komo operates from 11 Industrial Blvd in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, with nearly 4,000 CNC machines installed across the US and international markets. All Komo products are manufactured in the USA.

Komo Fusion & Mach III CNC Routers

Komo's flagship CNC router platforms are the Fusion and Mach III series. The Fusion VR and Fusion Twin Table are among the highest-output machines in the lineup, with the Twin Table supporting pendulum processing for continuous load and unload cycles. The Fusion 5-Axis adds full multi-axis capability with a choice of 36" or 48" Z travel for deep-draw parts, aerospace composites, and complex 3D contouring. The Mach III series (including VR510 Mach III, VR512 Mach III, VR-810 Mach III) is Komo's premier CNC router, offering more Z travel, larger tool changers, and twin-spindle configurations with at-spindle tool changers for fast material changeover.

Komo Xtreme, Solution, VGM & Legacy VR Routers

The Xtreme series is Komo's value-engineered CNC router, built for cost-conscious shops that still require Komo build quality. The Solution series offers flexibility in bed length and width for custom part envelopes. The VGM series is the heavy-duty member of the family, built for cutting both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Legacy VR platforms (VR-508, VR-510, VR-512, VR-810) with Mach II, Mach II SHO, and Mach III configurations remain widely traded on the used market, typically with Fanuc 0-M, 16i, 18i, 21i, 210i or 32i controls, 18,000 to 30,000 rpm HSK or ISO spindles, and 5' x 8' through 5' x 24' vacuum tables.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Komo

Komo CNC routers are built from heavy welded steel tube frames, precision-ground linear guideways, and Fanuc HVI servo systems. Many Komo VR and Mach III machines from the late 1990s and 2000s are still in daily service. Here is what to verify before buying a used unit.

Inspect the spindle, ATC, and bearings. Komo spindles run 18,000 to 24,000 rpm on VR series and 24,000 to 30,000 rpm on Mach III and Fusion machines. HSK 63F, HSK 50, and ISO 30 are common interfaces. Check spindle runout, listen for bearing noise at full rpm after warm-up, and test air blast and coolant-through functions. Cycle the ATC through every pocket. On twin-spindle Mach III units, verify both spindles independently.

Check the vacuum table, frame, and linear guides. Inspect the aluminum vacuum sub-surface for warping, gouges, and broken zones. Test each zone under load and confirm the pump pulls proper CFM. Check linear guides and ball bearing trucks for smooth travel. On moving-table configurations, check the rack and pinion drive on the X axis for gear wear and lash.

Verify ballscrews, rack & pinion, and servo tuning. Y and Z axes use pre-loaded precision ballscrews with Fanuc Alpha HVI servos. Long X travel is usually rack and pinion on Fusion and VR models. Measure backlash on Y and Z, and run a test cut to confirm surface finish and positioning repeatability. On 5-axis Fusion platforms, verify A/C rotary head calibration and axis clamps.

Identify the Fanuc control generation. Common combinations: Fanuc 0-M and 16i on 1990s VR machines, 18i and 21i on early 2000s VR Mach II, 210i-M on later VR Mach II SHO, and 31i or 32i on current Fusion and Mach III platforms.

Komo CNC Router Series

Fusion Series (VR, Twin Table, 5-Axis)

The Fusion VR is Komo's current flagship 3-axis router with a moving-table fixed-gantry design and vacuum table work surface. The Fusion Twin Table supports pendulum processing. The Fusion 5-Axis adds multi-axis capability with 36" or 48" Z travel for aerospace composites, foam patterns, and 3D parts. Standard spindle: 18 HP, 24,000 rpm, HSK 63F, with 15-position ATC.

Mach III Series (VR510, VR512, VR810)

The Mach III is Komo's premier router series for shops needing larger tool changers and extended Z travel. Moving-table configurations with at-spindle tool changers are standard. Twin-spindle setups are common, with dual 24,000 or 30,000 rpm HSK 50 or HSK 63F spindles and Fanuc Panel i controls.

Xtreme, Solution & VGM Series

The Xtreme offers core Komo build quality at an entry-level price. The Solution is configurable in bed length and width for non-standard work envelopes. The VGM is Komo's heavy-duty platform for ferrous and non-ferrous metals in addition to wood, plastic, and composites.

Legacy VR Series (VR-508, VR-510, VR-512, VR-810)

Older VR-series routers remain the most commonly traded on the used market. The VR-508 (5' x 8'), VR-510 (5' x 10'), VR-512 (5' x 12'), and VR-810 ship in Mach II, Mach II SHO, and Mach III configurations. Typical specs: cast-aluminum moving tables, single or dual vacuum zones, 12 to 18 HP spindles at 18,000 rpm, ISO 30 or BT 30 tapers, 8-position carousel ATCs, and Fanuc 0-M, 16i, or 210i-M controls.

How to Sell Your Used Komo

Komo routers hold strong resale value thanks to American build quality, heavy steel frames, Fanuc control standardization, and 20+ year production life. Fusion, Mach III twin-spindle, and VR-512 Mach II / III platforms are in particularly high demand.
