Kurt Manufacturing was founded in 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has grown into a global leader in precision workholding. The company introduced its first AngLock® vise in the 1950s, and the design quickly became the industry standard for CNC milling applications. Today Kurt is 100% employee-owned (ESOP) and operates over 500,000 square feet of manufacturing space in Minnesota. The company encompasses four divisions: Kurt Workholding, Kurt Machining, Kurt Die Casting, and Kurt Hydraulics. Kurt Workholding products are manufactured in the United States and backed by a Lifetime Iron Clad Warranty™ for materials and workmanship. The AngLock spherical segment design, which eliminates jaw lift during clamping, remains the foundation of nearly every Kurt vise produced.

Kurt CNC Vises & AngLock Workholding

Kurt's single-station vise lineup begins with the compact D40 (4" jaws) and scales through the D675, D688, and D810 (8" jaws). The DX6 CrossOver vise is Kurt's current flagship 6" platform, combining the best features of the D688 and 3600V into a narrower, stiffer design with a cast-on stationary jaw. For production environments, the VersatileLock 3600V series delivers pull-type jaw clamping that reduces stationary jaw deflection by at least 80%, with clamping repeatability within 0.0005". HD and DoubleLock vises (HD4, HD6, HDL4, HDL6, DL430, DL640, DL800) provide multi-station capability for high-density setups on VMCs and HMCs.

Kurt 5-Axis, Towers & Specialty Workholding

Kurt's 5-axis workholding includes the MaxLock HP self-centering vise series (HP420, HP440, HP460) and the DoveLock dovetail vise line (DT20, DTR10, DTR20), both manufactured from pre-hardened 4140 steel. CarvLock cluster towers and ToolBlox tombstones provide high-density workholding for horizontal machining centers. SeraLock foundations paired with WedgeLock and MoveLock clamping modules offer fully modular, reconfigurable fixturing. Kurt also manufactures hydraulic vises, hydraulic pumps (KHP5000, KHP3), SideWinder second-operation vises, and the RV36 robotic gripper for automated cells.

What to Look for When Buying Used Kurt Workholding

Kurt vises are built to last decades, and used units regularly deliver years of additional service. The AngLock design and ductile iron construction hold up well, but wear points exist.

Check the screw, nut, and bearing pack. Turn the handle through full travel and feel for gritty spots, binding, or excessive play. A worn leadscrew or nut produces inconsistent clamping force. On DX6 models the bearing pack is larger, but older D675 and D688 units may show wear. Rebuild kits are available for most D-series vises.

Inspect the stationary jaw for deflection and damage. On bolted-jaw models (D675, D688, D810), check the jaw-to-body interface for chips, corrosion, or looseness. The DX6 addresses this with a cast-on stationary jaw that eliminates the bolted joint. Verify jaw faces are flat and parallel with a precision indicator.

Verify the AngLock mechanism and jaw lift. Clamp a test piece and confirm the movable jaw seats downward with no measurable lift. If the part rises under force, the AngLock segment or mating surfaces may be worn. On VersatileLock (3600 series) vises, pull-type clamping should produce noticeably stiffer holding than push-type models.

Kurt Single-Station CNC Vises

DX CrossOver Series

The DX6 is Kurt's current 6" vise platform, a direct replacement for the D688 with a cast-on stationary jaw, narrower body for higher table density, and 9" jaw opening. The DX4 is the 4" version. Hydraulic variants (DX6H, DX6H-SD) accept Kurt pump systems for automated cell integration.

D-Series Legacy Vises

The D675 (6" jaws, 7.5" opening) and D688 (6" jaws, 8.8" opening) are among the most widely traded used vises in North America. The D810 provides 8" jaws with 10" opening. Smaller models include the D30, D40, D50, and D60. All D-series vises use the AngLock push-type design and remain fully parts-supported.

VersatileLock (3600 Series)

The 3600V is widely regarded as Kurt's most rigid vise. The one-piece body and stationary jaw casting with pull-type clamping reduces jaw deflection by at least 80%. Available in 4" (3400V), 6" (3600V), and 8" (3800V) with hydraulic (H) and angular (A) variants. VersatileLock vises mount back-to-back as tombstone assemblies for HMCs.

Kurt Multi-Station & Production Vises

The HD690 and HD691 are heavy-duty single-station vises with 9" openings. HDL4/HDL6 double-station vises (with HDLM machinable-jaw variants) deliver high-density clamping for VMC setups. The DoubleLock line (DL430, DL640, DL800) provides dual independent stations in one body. XL6/XL8 extra-capacity vises handle oversized workpieces. PT-series vises (PT400A, PT600A, PT800A) mount to pallet-changer interfaces for automated production.

Kurt 5-Axis & Modular Workholding

MaxLock HP Self-Centering Vises

The MaxLock HP series (HP420, HP440, HP460) delivers self-centering 5-axis clamping with serrated, dovetail, or machinable jaw options. Pre-hardened 4140 steel with repeatability within plus or minus 0.0005" in 5", 7", and 9" lengths, supporting I.D. and O.D. clamping.

DoveLock Dovetail 5-Axis Vises

The DoveLock line (DT20, DTR10, DTR20) uses dovetail clamping for aggressive 5-axis machining. Pre-hardened 4140 steel, with reversible jaw models (DTR10, DTR20) accommodating a broad range of widths.

Towers, Tombstones & Modular Systems

Kurt CarvLock cluster towers (CTHDL series) provide eight-station clamping for HMCs with up to 7,460 lbs. of force. ToolBlox tombstones offer pre-drilled mounting surfaces for custom fixturing. SeraLock foundations paired with WedgeLock and MoveLock modules deliver reconfigurable workholding that adapts to changing part sizes without dedicated fixtures.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Kurt Workholding

Are used Kurt vises reliable?

Yes. Kurt vises are manufactured from 80,000 PSI ductile iron with precision-machined components. The AngLock design has been proven across decades of production use, and rebuild kits are available for most D-series models.

What is the difference between the Kurt D688 and DX6?

The DX6 CrossOver is Kurt's direct replacement for the D688. Both have 6" jaws and the same bed height for easy retrofits. The DX6 adds a cast-on stationary jaw for less deflection, a narrower body for higher table density, and a 9" opening (versus 8.8").

What should I inspect before buying a used Kurt vise?

Focus on four areas: the leadscrew and nut assembly (feel for wear or binding), the stationary jaw interface (check for damage on bolted-jaw models), the AngLock mechanism (verify no jaw lift during clamping), and overall body condition (cracks, corrosion, or warping).

What Kurt models hold their value best?

The DX6, D688, and 3600V VersatileLock maintain the strongest resale values. MaxLock HP 5-axis vises and CarvLock towers also hold well. Call (844) 478-8181 for current valuations.

Can I still get parts for older Kurt vises?

Yes. Kurt manufactures rebuild kits for the D30, D40, D50, D60, D675, D688, and D810. Replacement leadscrews, nuts, handles, jaw sets, and AngLock segments are available through authorized distributors.

What industries use Kurt workholding?

Kurt serves aerospace, automotive, medical, defense, semiconductor, energy, die and mold, and general precision manufacturing.
