Milltronics is one of the most respected American-built CNC brands. The company was founded in 1973 by Gary Welch, an electrical engineer from Control Data Corporation, in Richfield, Minnesota, originally as Industrial Information Controls (IIC) to build microprocessor-based machine tool controls. In 1980, Milltronics introduced its first Centurion CNC, and in 1983 launched the Partner I, its first vertical machining center. In 1990 the company debuted Centurion V, one of the earliest PC-based CNC controls. Milltronics relocated to its current manufacturing facility in Waconia, Minnesota in 1996, and over the following decades grew to more than 50 models spanning toolroom, production, and bridge-mill applications. In July 2015, Milltronics was acquired by Hurco Companies (NASDAQ: HURC) and now operates as Milltronics USA, a member of the Hurco Companies Machine Tool Group based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Over 14,000 Milltronics machines are installed globally, all designed, built, and supported by American engineers and craftsmen.

Milltronics Vertical Machining Centers & Bridge Mills

Milltronics builds one of the most comprehensive American VMC product lines in the industry. The VM-series delivers general-purpose 40-taper vertical machining with 10,000 RPM spindles, swing-arm tool changers, and BIG-PLUS dual-contact spindles across common table sizes (VM2515, VM3015, VM4020, VM5020, and larger). The XP-series (VM8434XP, VR4325XP) adds 50-taper performance for heavy cutting. The IL-series offers in-line spindle VMCs and BR-series bridge mills handle extra-large travels up to 200 inches in X for die, mold, aluminum, and fabricated-part work. Legacy Partner I/II/III/IV and MB-series VMCs remain widely traded on the used market.

Milltronics Toolroom Mills & Lathes

Milltronics is well known for its toolroom lineup. VK-series CNC knee mills and RH/RW rigid-head toolroom bed mills support manual, teach, or full-CNC operation, ideal for prototyping, repair work, and short runs. On the turning side, the SL-series (SL6-II, SL8-II, SL10-II) delivers slant-bed CNC lathes with linear-guide roller ways and the 9000 control. The ML-series combination lathes and TRL toolroom lathes offer flexible manual/CNC operation for job shops.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Milltronics

Milltronics machines are American-designed and built in Waconia, Minnesota. The brand's integrated Centurion and 9000-series controls and flexible manual/teach/CNC modes make these machines popular with job shops and toolrooms.

Identify the control generation first. Milltronics machines span five decades. Current machines run INSPIRE+ V11 or 9000-DGI (Windows-based, touchscreen, conversational plus G/M code). Mid-generation uses 9000-Series or 8200-B. Legacy machines carry Centurion 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7; PC-based 5 and 6 are still serviceable. Verify parameter-retention batteries on legacy controls. Control age affects parts availability and resale value.

Inspect the spindle and tool changer. VM-series machines run 10,000 RPM belt-driven 40-taper spindles with BIG-PLUS dual-contact interfaces. XP-series use 50-taper spindles with dual-wound motors. Test runout cold and warm, listen for bearing noise across the RPM range, and verify rigid tapping. Cycle the tool changer through every pocket. On 50-taper machines, confirm the power drawbar releases and re-clamps cleanly.

Check ways, ballscrews, and table. Milltronics VMCs use linear cross-roller guides or box ways. Measure backlash on all axes. Inspect the table for gouging or scoring, since some earlier Milltronics tables had softer surfaces. On BR-series bridge mills, inspect gantry, Z-axis column, and linear ways across full travel.

Verify factory service history. Milltronics maintains serial-number-based service and parts records, so machines with documented history command premium offers. Confirm the serial, check for factory repairs, and verify any remaining warranty.

Milltronics Vertical Machining Centers

VM Series (General Purpose)

The VM-series is Milltronics' most widely traded VMC family. Common sizes: VM2515 (25x15 table), VM3015, VM4020 (the most popular), VM5020, VM20/VM20XT, and larger variants. Standard features: 10,000 RPM BIG-PLUS dual-contact spindles, swing-arm tool changers, full enclosures, and the 9000 control. The 40-taper belt-driven architecture balances speed and torque for job shops.

XP Series (50-Taper)

The XP-series (VM8434XP, VR4325XP) adds #50 taper performance for heavy cutting. The VR4325XP features a geared head; other XP models use heavy-duty belt drives. Linear cross-roller guides, direct-coupled ballscrews, and dual-wound spindle motors deliver torque for steel roughing.

IL Series (Inline Spindle) and Bridge Mills (BR Series)

The IL-series provides in-line spindle VMCs for higher-speed production. The BR-series bridge mills (BR5100IL, BR6100IL, BR6150IL, BR8100IL, BR8150IL, BR82000IL) combine CNC-router layouts with cast bridges, linear cross-roller guides, and 40-taper inline spindles. X-travels extend up to 200 inches by 80 inches in Y, ideal for die, mold, aluminum plate, and large fabricated parts.

Milltronics Toolroom Mills

VK Series Knee Mills

The VK-series CNC knee mills (VK4, VK4-II and successors) retain the MillSlide Z-axis design and support manual, teach, or full-CNC operation. The VK4-II runs the 8200-B with conversational programming, G/M code, or CAM output. Ideal for prototyping, repair, and short runs.

Toolroom Bed Mills (RH, RW, TRM)

The RH20, RW20, and TRM 3016 rigid-head toolroom bed mills offer an open-bed design with larger travels than a knee mill while keeping toolroom flexibility.

Milltronics Turning Centers

SL Series (Slant-Bed Lathes)

The SL-II series (SL6-II, SL8-II, SL10-II) delivers true slant-bed CNC lathes with linear-motion guide roller ways, direct-coupled ballscrews, and the 9000-series control. SL6-II: 6-inch chuck, 17 HP, 6,000 RPM, 12-station turret. SL8-II: 8-inch chuck, 22 HP, 4,000 RPM. SL10-II: 10-inch chuck, 30 HP, 3.74-inch bore.

ML and TRL Combination Lathes

The ML-series (ML15, ML16/40, ML20, ML22/60) combination lathes run as manual, teach, or full-CNC for job-shop flexibility. The TRL-series toolroom lathes provide similar flexibility with heavier castings.
