Schunk introduced hydraulic expansion toolholding (TENDO) in 1978, entered stationary workholding with the TANDEM system in 1988, and launched its first standardized robotic gripper in 1982. Today the company is led by third-generation siblings Henrik A. Schunk and Kristina I. Schunk. Schunk employs over 3,500 people across more than 50 countries, with North American operations headquartered at 211 Kitty Hawk Drive, Morrisville, North Carolina (near Raleigh). With over 11,000 standard components, Schunk offers the world's largest assortment of clamping technology and gripping systems.

Schunk Workholding: Lathe Chucks, Vises & Pallet Systems

Schunk's workholding portfolio spans from ROTA power lathe chucks (including the ROTA-S plus, ROTA NCE, ROTA NCR, ROTA NCX, and ROTA THW3 quick jaw-change models) through KONTEC clamping vises (KSC, KSC-F, KSX 5-axis, KSC mini), TANDEM clamping force blocks, MAGNOS electro-permanent magnetic clamping plates, PLANOS vacuum clamping systems, and the VERO-S quick-change pallet system. The VERO-S platform is Schunk's zero-point clamping solution, enabling setup time reductions of up to 90%. Schunk also manufactures the world's largest standard chuck jaw program, including soft jaws, hard jaws, and lightweight variants.

Schunk Toolholding & Gripping Systems

The TENDO hydraulic expansion toolholder line (Tendo E compact, Tendo Platinum, Tendo Slim 4ax, Tendo Aviation, TENDOturn) provides high-precision tool clamping with vibration damping for milling, drilling, and reaming. The TRIBOS polygonal clamping system (Tribos-S, Tribos-Mini, Tribos-SVL, Tribos-RM) offers maintenance-free tool clamping with sub-3-micron runout accuracy. The SINO-R and CELSIO lines cover shrink-fit toolholding. Schunk's gripping systems division produces the PGN-plus-P pneumatic gripper, EGP and EGL mechatronic grippers, Co-act collaborative grippers, and WSG intelligent grippers for robotic automation.

What to Look for When Buying Used Schunk Workholding and Toolholding

Schunk manufactures over 11,000 standard components across clamping technology and gripping systems. Used Schunk products retain strong value due to German precision engineering, broad compatibility, and ongoing parts support. Here is what to inspect.

On lathe chucks, check jaw condition, clamping force, and runout. Inspect jaw serrations for wear or damage. Test clamping force with a gauge against the original specification. Measure chuck runout on a ground test bar. On ROTA NCR pendulum compensation models, verify the compensation mechanism operates smoothly. On quick jaw-change models (ROTA THW3, ROTA NCX), test for positive jaw seating and repeatability. Check seals for coolant intrusion on sealed models like the ROTA NCR-A.

On toolholders, verify bore condition and clamping performance. Inspect the taper (HSK, CAT, BT) for fretting, nicks, or corrosion. On TENDO hydraulic expansion holders, test the clamping screw and verify the hydraulic chamber holds pressure. On TRIBOS polygonal clamping holders, confirm the bore is clean and undamaged. Both TENDO and TRIBOS holders should achieve under 3 microns runout at the rated projection length.

On vises and pallet systems, check alignment and locating accuracy. On KONTEC vises, test clamping force and verify fixed-jaw parallelism. On VERO-S quick-change modules, verify the clamping pin interface for wear and test repeat positioning accuracy (under 5 microns). Confirm pneumatic actuation on powered models.

Schunk ROTA Lathe Chucks

The ROTA-S plus 2.0 is Schunk's flagship manual lathe chuck for turning and milling. The ROTA NCE is a weight-reduced power chuck that lowers moment of inertia by up to 40%. The ROTA NCR and ROTA NCR-A six-jaw pendulum compensation chucks provide low-deformation clamping for thin-walled workpieces. The ROTA NCX combines quick jaw-change with a large through-hole, while the ROTA THW3 features patented sealing and permanent lubrication. The ROTA TB2 pneumatic self-contained chuck serves pipe and rod machining for oil and mining applications. The ROTA-S Flex provides flexible clamping for mixed turning/milling work. Schunk manufactures the world's largest standard chuck jaw program, including soft jaws, hard jaws, stepped jaws, and lightweight aluminum variants.

Schunk Toolholders

TENDO Hydraulic Expansion

The TENDO E compact is Schunk's best-selling hydraulic expansion toolholder for milling, drilling, and reaming. The TENDO Platinum provides maximum rigidity through improved brazing technology. The TENDO Slim 4ax features a slim profile for 5-axis clearance with optional CoolFlow coolant-through. The TENDO Aviation targets aerospace applications, and the TENDOturn provides hydraulic clamping for lathe turrets.

TRIBOS, SINO-R & CELSIO

The TRIBOS polygonal clamping system achieves sub-3-micron runout with zero maintenance. Models include TRIBOS-S (standard), TRIBOS-Mini (micro machining), TRIBOS-SVL (slim extensions), and TRIBOS-RM (driven lathe tools). The SINO-R provides maintenance-free clamping for rough milling. The CELSIO shrink-fit line offers high rigidity with thermal expansion technology.

Schunk Workholding Systems

The VERO-S quick-change pallet system uses zero-point clamping to reduce setup times by up to 90%. Modules range from the full-size NSL plus through the NSE mini to the NSE Mikro 49. The KONTEC vise family includes single-acting KSC, five-axis KSX and KSX-C2, double-clamping KSC-D, and the compact KSC mini. TANDEM clamping force blocks provide self-centering clamping for automated pallet loading. MAGNOS electro-permanent magnetic plates eliminate clamp interference for 5-sided access. PLANOS vacuum clamping serves thin or non-ferrous workpieces.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Schunk Products

Is Schunk SE & Co. KG the same as Schunk Group?

No. Schunk SE & Co. KG (Lauffen am Neckar) manufactures clamping technology and gripping systems for machine tools and automation. Schunk Group (Heuchelheim, Hessen) manufactures carbon, ceramics, and sintered metal products. They are separate, unrelated companies.

What spindle interfaces does Schunk toolholding support?

Schunk TENDO and TRIBOS toolholders are available in HSK-A, HSK-E, CAT 40, CAT 50, BT 30, BT 40, BT 50, SK/DIN, Capto, and other interfaces. ROTA lathe chucks mount to standard A2 spindle noses. Specify the correct interface when purchasing used toolholders to ensure machine compatibility.

Are used Schunk products reliable?

Yes. Schunk products are engineered and manufactured in Germany to exacting standards. The company has produced over 1,000,000 grippers and 100,000 lathe chucks.
