What to Look for When Buying a Used Stratasys 3D Printer

Stratasys 3D printers are built for industrial duty and well-maintained units can run reliably for many years. Inspection focus depends on the technology (FDM, PolyJet, SAF, P3, SLA), but several principles apply across the lineup. Here is what to inspect on used units.

On FDM printers, inspect the extruder, gantry, and chamber. Check the print head extruder tip and liquefier for wear or clogs. Verify the gantry motion is smooth and accurate on all axes (X, Y, Z), and listen for stepper or servo noise. On heated-chamber Fortus and F900 machines, verify chamber heater function and door seal condition. Check the material bay, filament drive, and the support material removal system. Confirm the GrabCAD Print software boots and communicates with the printer.

On PolyJet machines (J Series, Objet, Connex), inspect the print heads. PolyJet print heads are wear items and are the most significant cost on used PolyJet machines. Verify head count, document any clogged or weak nozzles, and check head replacement history. Test the UV lamp output, photopolymer material cartridges and lines, and the wash and post-cure stations if equipped. Inspect the build tray for damage and confirm the roller leveling system functions.

On H350 SAF, Origin One P3, and Neo SLA, check the optical system. On the H350 SAF printer, verify the IR lamp, print head, and powder handling system. On Origin One P3 DLP machines, check the LED engine, projector optics, and resin vat condition. On Neo450 and Neo800 SLA printers, check the laser power, scanner mirrors, and resin tank. Verify post-processing stations transfer with the machine.

Identify materials, software, and any production qualifications. Stratasys industrial materials including ULTEM 1010, ULTEM 9085, ABS-M30, Nylon 12, and the PolyJet photopolymer family are key for aerospace, medical, and certified production work. Confirm material certifications and recent batches transfer with the machine. Check GrabCAD Print software version, any GrabCAD Print Pro licensing, and any qualified production part programs.

Stratasys 3D Printer Series

F123 Series Office FDM

The F123 Series (F170, F270, F370) is Stratasys's office and design-room FDM platform. F123 machines run ABS, PC-ABS, ASA, PLA, and engineering thermoplastics from a 4-bay material system. The F370 is the largest of the three with a 14 x 10 x 14 inch build envelope.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Stratasys 3D Printers

What 3D printing technologies does Stratasys make?

Five core technologies: FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling, Stratasys's original patented tech), PolyJet (multi-material photopolymer jetting from the Objet merger), SAF (Selective Absorption Fusion powder bed), P3 (Programmable Photopolymerization DLP from Origin), and SLA (stereolithography on the Neo platform from RPS).

Are used Stratasys 3D printers reliable?

Yes. Stratasys industrial 3D printers are built for production duty and many original Fortus, F900, and J Series machines from the 2010s remain in active production today. Reliability depends heavily on consumable maintenance — print heads on PolyJet, extruder tips on FDM, and lamps and optics on photopolymer machines.

What should I inspect on a used Stratasys?

Print head condition and history (especially on PolyJet), extruder and gantry on FDM, build chamber heater and seals, UV lamp and resin tank on photopolymer machines, material bay and material certifications, GrabCAD Print software version, and any production part qualifications that transfer with the machine.

What is the difference between FDM and PolyJet?

FDM extrudes melted thermoplastic filament layer by layer for functional engineering parts in ABS, PC, Nylon, ULTEM, and similar engineering thermoplastics. PolyJet jets liquid photopolymers and UV-cures each layer for high-resolution multi-material parts including color, transparent, and flexible materials in one print.

Which Stratasys models hold their value best?

Fortus 450mc and Fortus 380mc production FDM, F900 large-format FDM, J750 and J850 PolyJet, H350 SAF, and Neo800 SLA all hold steady resale values. Machines with documented service history, current print heads (PolyJet), and recent extruder maintenance (FDM) command premiums.
