Fritz Studer AG was founded in 1912 by Fritz Studer in Steffisburg, Switzerland, when he built his own cylindrical grinder because no machine on the market could produce the precise parts he needed. More than a century later, Studer has delivered over 21,000 cylindrical grinding machines worldwide and is one of the most trusted names in precision cylindrical grinding. Key milestones include the introduction of hydrodynamic spindle bearings in 1965, the patented Granitan® S103 mineral casting machine bed in 1976 (still the foundation of every Studer machine today), and the move to the Bordeaux red and white machine livery in 1985. In 1994 Studer joined what is now the UNITED GRINDING Group and forms the core of the Cylindrical grinding technology group together with Schaudt and Mikrosa. Headquartered in Thun (Steffisburg), Switzerland, with around 800 employees and representation in 40 countries, Studer is supported in North America by UNITED GRINDING North America in Miamisburg, Ohio, providing sales, service, parts, training, and certified machine rebuilds.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Studer

Inspect the Granitan® bed and guideway system. Every Studer machine since 1976 is built on a patented Granitan® S103 mineral cast bed that provides the vibration damping, thermal stability, and wear resistance Studer is famous for. Inspect the bed for cracks, oil saturation, or chips. On the S41, verify the StuderGuide® guideway and linear-motor axes traverse smoothly across full travel. On S31, S33, and favorit, confirm ball-screw axis condition and the swiveling wheelhead B-axis (down to 0.00005°) indexes accurately.

Test the spindle, wheelhead, and tailstock. Studer cylindrical grinders use hydrodynamic spindle bearings, the brand's hallmark since 1965. Test grinding spindle runout, listen for bearing noise, and check thermal stability after warm-up. Verify each wheelhead variant (up to four external wheels or three internal spindles on S41 — over 30 head combinations possible) cycles correctly. Check workhead and tailstock alignment, in-process Marposs gauging if equipped, and coolant filtration and chiller (Studer typically runs on oil for highest precision).

Check the C.O.R.E. control, software, and automation. Current Studer machines run on the C.O.R.E. Panel and C.O.R.E. OS platform launched in 2021. Confirm StuderWIN, StuderGRIND, and Studer-Pictogramming software licenses transfer with the machine, along with any STUDER QuickSet, WireDress contact-free dressing, or Flexload six-axis robotic loading. New favoritCNC machines run a modern Fanuc control. Older Studer CNCs may use Fanuc or earlier controls — confirm OS version and license status.

Frequently Asked Questions About Used Studer Machines

Are used Studer cylindrical grinding machines reliable?

Yes. Studer is widely regarded as the global benchmark for precision cylindrical grinding, with over 21,000 machines delivered since 1912. Granitan® mineral cast beds, hydrodynamic spindle bearings, StuderGuide® guideways, and Swiss build quality hold accuracy across long production runs. Parts and certified rebuilds are supported through UNITED GRINDING North America in Miamisburg, OH.

What CNC control and software does Studer use?

Current Studer machines run on the C.O.R.E. Panel and C.O.R.E. OS platform with StuderWIN operation, StuderGRIND programming, and Studer-Pictogramming for visual setup. The new favoritCNC uses a modern Fanuc control. Programming runs on the machine or external PC, and STUDER QuickSet reduces setup times.

What should I inspect before buying a used Studer?

Focus on Granitan® bed condition, hydrodynamic spindle bearings, guideway system (StuderGuide® on S41, ball screws on S31/S33/favorit), B-axis indexing, wheelhead and spindle configuration, tailstock and workhead alignment, Marposs in-process gauging, coolant filtration and chiller, and C.O.R.E. or Fanuc control state with software license transfer.

Which Studer models hold their value best?

The S31, S33, S41, S141, and favorit hold the strongest residual values, driven by demand from aerospace (Studer's largest segment), automotive, and precision engineering. Low-hour machines with WireDress or Flexload automation command additional premium. Call (844) 478-8181 for valuations.

What is Granitan® and why does it matter?

Granitan® S103 is a patented mineral casting (granite-epoxy composite) developed by Studer in 1976 and used as the bed of every Studer cylindrical grinder since. It provides much better vibration damping than cast iron, exceptional thermal stability, and wear resistance, which is the foundation of Studer's accuracy. About 2,500 tons of Granitan® was used in the first 1,000 S31 machines alone.
