The 5C Collet: The Workholding Standard That Refused to Die

What is a 5C collet?

A 5C collet is a slotted steel sleeve that grips round, hex or square stock when a draw tube pulls its tapered nose into a matching taper, squeezing the jaws closed. Hardinge's catalog lists 5C capacities up to 1-1/16 inch round, 29/32 inch hex and 3/4 inch square, on a 1.250 inch body with a 1.238 inch x 20 draw thread. The Precision Machined Products Association says Hardinge invented the 5C in 1901, which makes it 125 years old in 2026, and the same collet still fits lathes, collet blocks and indexers built generations apart.

You have probably dropped a part into a 5C collet this month without thinking twice about it. That collet is built to a design the Precision Machined Products Association dates to 1901. It is 125 years old this year, and it still fits the machine in front of you.

Think about that for a second. The machine you run has a control that would have been science fiction to the people who designed that collet. The spindle turns faster, the slides move on ball screws, the program came off a computer. And the thing actually holding the part is a slotted steel sleeve whose basic shape was settled before the Model T.

Born in a Watch-Tool Shop

The collet is older than the 5C. Watchmakers were holding tiny parts in split chucks on bench lathes long before production machining existed. MetMo's history of the collet credits Charles S. Moseley with a lathe around 1858 that could hold collets, then called split chucks, and the Webster-Whitcomb lathe of 1888 and 1889 with bringing in the draw-tube collet, the layout the 5C still uses.

Hardinge came out of that world. Canadian-born brothers Henry and Franklin Hardinge founded Hardinge Brothers in Chicago on July 23, 1890, making watchmakers' tools in an eight-by-eight-foot building. Around 1902 they took over the Cataract line of precision bench lathes. In 1931 the company moved to Elmira, New York, and joined the Morrison collet business there.

Somewhere in the middle of that, according to the Precision Machined Products Association, Hardinge invented the 5C collet in 1901. Some collet histories hedge on the exact year. Nobody hedges on what happened next: the design stuck.

How a 5C Grips

A 5C is a hardened steel sleeve with slots cut into its nose and a tapered front end. A draw tube runs through the spindle and threads onto the back of the collet. Pull the draw tube back and the collet's taper is drawn into a matching taper in the spindle nose or collet closer, which squeezes the slotted nose closed around the stock.

That is the whole mechanism. No jaws to set, no chuck key, and the grip is concentric because the collet closes evenly all the way around. It is the same idea a Swiss lathe uses with its guide bush and collets.

The Numbers Behind the Standard

These are the 5C dimensions from Hardinge's spindle tooling catalog.

5C Specification Value
Max round capacity 1-1/16 in (26.99 mm)
Max hex capacity 29/32 in (23.02 mm)
Max square capacity 3/4 in (19.05 mm)
Body diameter 1.250 in (31.75 mm)
Draw thread 1.238 in x 20, right hand
Overall length 3.281 in (83.34 mm)

The PMPA lists 5C round capacities from 0.5 mm, about 0.020 inch, up to that 1-1/16 inch maximum, and notes emergency collets that can be bored to whatever size a job needs.

The Same Collet Everywhere

Here's the part most machinists never think about: the 5C in your lathe spindle, the 5C in your collet block on the mill and the 5C in your indexer are the same part. Same body, same taper, same draw thread. A collet out of a toolbox that has been in the shop for decades drops straight into a fixture bought last month.

That interchangeability helps explain why the 5C spread off the lathe. The PMPA says it became a preferred choice for precision workholding in lathes, mills and grinders. Once a shop owns a rack of 5C collets, every new piece of equipment that takes a 5C uses collets the shop already has.

It even helped start a machine tool company. In 1983 Gene Haas founded Haas Automation to build what Gear Solutions describes as the industry's first fully automatic programmable collet indexer, a 5C indexer designed to increase production in his own machine shop. A company that went on to build CNC machines got its start holding parts in a collet design from 1901.

Why It Refused to Die

Plenty of good designs disappear because something better comes along. The 5C kept its place for a few practical reasons.

It was built well from the start. The PMPA credits exacting standards, special alloy steel, heat treatment and spring tempering for the collet's long life.

It became a standard. Because the dimensions are standardized, every new lathe, collet block and indexer that took a 5C made the collets a shop already owned more valuable, not obsolete.

It does one job simply. A taper, a slotted sleeve and a draw tube. There are few moving parts and nothing to program.

Workholding has changed a lot since 1901. But the 5C is the rare piece of shop equipment that has stayed compatible with itself for generations.

The Payoff

For the industry, a standard like the 5C pays off in three ways. It means a shop does not have to retool its workholding every time it buys a machine. It means tooling suppliers can make one collet design that fits machines from many builders. And it means a used lathe or indexer that takes a 5C works with collets the buyer probably already has on the shelf.

Every time you tighten a 5C, you are using a decision someone made in a Chicago watch-tool shop before the Wright brothers flew. The machine changed. The collet did not have to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 5C collet?

A slotted, hardened steel workholding sleeve. A draw tube threads onto the back of the collet and pulls it into a matching taper, which squeezes the slotted nose closed around round, hex or square stock. Hardinge lists 5C capacities up to 1-1/16 inch round, 29/32 inch hex and 3/4 inch square.

Who invented the 5C collet?

The Precision Machined Products Association says Hardinge invented the 5C collet in 1901. Hardinge Brothers was founded in Chicago in 1890 by Canadian-born brothers Henry and Franklin Hardinge, who started out making watchmakers' tools.

How old is the 5C collet standard?

If you take the 1901 date the Precision Machined Products Association gives, the 5C turns 125 in 2026. Some collet histories hedge on the exact year, but the design has been in continuous use for well over a century.

What is the maximum capacity of a 5C collet?

Hardinge lists 1-1/16 inch (26.99 mm) round, 29/32 inch (23.02 mm) hex and 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) square. The PMPA notes round capacities as small as 0.5 mm, and emergency collets can be bored to a custom size.

What are the dimensions of a 5C collet?

Hardinge's spindle tooling catalog lists a 1.250 inch (31.75 mm) body diameter, a 1.238 inch x 20 right-hand draw thread and an overall length of 3.281 inches (83.34 mm).

Where are 5C collets used besides lathes?

The PMPA says the 5C became a preferred choice for precision workholding in lathes, mills and grinders. The same collet goes into lathe spindles, collet blocks and collet indexers. Haas Automation's first product in 1983 was a programmable 5C collet indexer.

Why has the 5C collet lasted so long?

The PMPA credits exacting standards, special alloy steel, heat treatment and spring tempering. Because the dimensions are standardized, a 5C made decades ago fits a fixture or indexer bought this year, and that interchangeability is what keeps the standard alive.

What was Haas Automation's first product?

A 5C collet indexer. Gene Haas founded Haas Automation in 1983 to build what Gear Solutions describes as the industry's first fully automatic programmable collet indexer, designed to increase production in his own machine shop.
