It acquired the Swiss grinder builder Kellenberger in 1995, bought Bridgeport in 2004, added Jones and Shipman from the UK in 2010, and gathered Hauser jig grinders, Tschudin centerless grinders, Voumard internal grinders, Usach production grinders, and the Forkardt workholding group along the way. In short, the iron is still made and still supported, which is what protects parts availability and resale on a used Hardinge.
Precision Built Into the Spindle
Hardinge engineering starts at the spindle and works outward. On the turning side the spindle is collet-ready, meaning the workholding mounts directly and concentrically rather than through an adapter, which removes a stack of error before the first cut. On the Super-Precision machines that spindle is preloaded and matched to the motor, and total indicated runout is held to fractions of a micron, the kind of accuracy a shop normally associates with a grinder, not a lathe.
The structure under that spindle is the other half of the story. Hardinge's patented HARCRETE polymer-composite base damps vibration and resists thermal drift far better than a comparable iron casting, which is what lets the machine hold its accuracy through a long run and through temperature swings. Glass scales, hand-fitted assembly, and certified roundness testing finish the package. None of it is decoration. The Grinding Group. Kellenberger cylindrical grinders from Switzerland, Jones and Shipman surface and cylindrical grinders from the UK, Hauser jig grinders, Tschudin centerless grinders, Voumard internal grinders, and Usach production grinders. Several are the reference machine in their category.

Why a Used Hardinge Holds Its Value
Hardinge iron holds value on the secondary market for the same reasons shops pay the premium new. The precision pedigree is real and hard to replace, the brands stay in active OEM parts support, operators already know the machines, and demand from aerospace, medical, defense, and tool-and-die shops stays steady because those industries do not stop needing precision. A clean Super-Precision lathe, a tight HLV-H, or a Bridgeport Series 1 with good ways is a machine a shop can put straight to work.
The arbitrage for a used buyer is real, with the spindle and accuracy as the conditions. As a rough guide to current secondary-market activity, Bridgeport Series 1 manual mills tend to trade from the low four figures to around ten thousand dollars by condition and head type, the HLV-H toolroom lathe holds its value better than any other manual lathe and commands a premium, production CHNC, Conquest, Cobra, and QUEST lathes run from the mid four figures into the five figures, Bridgeport V, XR, and GX VMCs run in the five figures, and Super-Precision T-series machines and Kellenberger and Hauser grinders reach well into the five and six figures. Many listings are request-price, and a certified-accuracy machine or a documented spindle rebuild adds real value, so the real number always comes down to a careful read of the specific machine.
What to Check When Buying a Used Hardinge
Super-Precision spindle runout. On Super-Precision lathes the spindle is everything. Test total indicated runout with a certified ground bar in a Special-Accuracy collet after a 20-minute warm-up. Runout beyond a tenth suggests bearing damage, which is the most expensive repair on the machine.
Collet closer and tailstock. Verify collet closer repeatability and clamping, and check tailstock alignment, since both directly affect the concentricity you are paying for.
HARCRETE base. Inspect the polymer-composite base for cracks. It is central to the machine's damping and accuracy and is not a simple repair.
Bridgeport head, ways, and leadscrews. On Series 1 and 2 mills, check R8 spindle runout and the taper for galling, test the 2J variable-speed head and its varidisc halves for smooth slide, and measure X and Y backlash. Up to about 0.010 inch is acceptable used; 0.020 or more means leadscrew and feed-nut replacement.
VMC and turning spindle, ATC, and turret. Test spindle runout cold and warm, cycle the tool changer through every pocket, check ballscrew backlash, and confirm live-tool runout on BMT or VDI turrets.
Control generation. Identify the control, current Fanuc 0i or 31i, Siemens, or Heidenhain versus legacy BOSS, DX-32, or SX-15 on older Bridgeports, since a legacy control may need a retrofit and affects parts and resale.
Grinders. On Kellenberger, Hauser, and Voumard machines, check wheel-spindle bearing rumble and thermal stability, and on hydrostatic-way machines confirm oil pressure at every pocket.
Records and provenance. A documented service history, a certified-accuracy report, or a known prior owner are worth paying for on a machine bought for its precision.
