Meet the Machine: DMG Mori CTX Gamma 3000 TC Turn-Mill Center

Most shops with a live-tool lathe will tell you they have turn-mill capability. They are half right. A turret with live tooling drills cross-holes and mills flats at center height. That is useful. It is not a turn-mill center. The 2020 DMG Mori CTX Gamma 3000 TC is a turn-mill center: a 5-axis simultaneous machining platform with a B-axis milling spindle that swivels 120 degrees in either direction, a Y-axis that travels 210 mm off centerline, 12,000 RPM and 48.3 hp of milling power, and a counter spindle that handles the second end of the part without the operator touching it. The machine turns. It also mills anything a 5-axis machining center can mill. Those are different capabilities, and on complex long components the difference shows up in your setup time, your scrap rate, and your quoted lead time.

The Transfer Problem

Complex turned components have always created a workflow problem. The lathe handles the turned features. The machining center handles the milled features. Between those two operations is a transfer: the part comes off the lathe, gets indicated into a fixture on the machining center, gets qualified, and then gets machined. Every transfer is a chance for the part to move. On long components, that movement compounds. A shaft that is 3,000 mm long and within tolerance at the lathe can arrive at the machining center with a datum shift that puts milled features out of position relative to the turned geometry.

The CTX Gamma 3000 TC is built to eliminate that transfer. The Z-axis spans 3,050 mm (120.1 inches). The X-axis travels 800 mm. The Y-axis moves 210 mm off centerline in either direction. The B-axis swivels to any angle within 120 degrees of center. Every turned diameter, every milled pocket, every cross-drilled hole, every angled feature on the part gets machined in a single coordinate system, from a single datum, without the part leaving the spindle until it is finished.

What a B-Axis Actually Means

A fixed live tool in a turret has one orientation. It drills at 90 degrees to the spindle axis, or it mills at whatever angle the turret was indexed to when the tool was set up. It cannot change that orientation mid-program. The B-axis on the CTX Gamma 3000 TC swivels continuously from -120 to +120 degrees during machining. The compactMASTER spindle mounted on that B-axis can approach a feature from any angle within that range, interpolating simultaneously with the X, Y, Z, and C axes.

In practice, that means the machine can undercut, machine angled bores, mill complex pockets on the OD of a shaft, interpolate helical features, and finish surfaces that a conventional turning center with live tooling would have to transfer to a separate 5-axis VMC to complete. The 80-position tool magazine carries up to 280 mm diameter tools at up to 30 kg each, which means the machine is tooled for aggressive stock removal and fine finishing in the same setup without running out of positions.

Counter Spindle: The Second End Without a Second Setup

The counter spindle on the CTX Gamma 3000 TC is not an accessory. It is the other half of the complete machining proposition. When the main spindle finishes its operations, the counter spindle picks up the workpiece, the main spindle releases, and the second end is presented for machining. No operator intervention. No re-chucking. No new datum. The coordinate system established at the start of the program extends through both ends of the part.

For components where concentricity between the two ends matters, this is the correct way to hold tolerance. Re-chucking introduces runout. On a 3,000 mm part, runout at the chuck becomes a measurable geometric error at the far end. The counter spindle eliminates that variable entirely. The main spindle delivers 4,000 Nm of torque, which handles interrupted cuts and heavy material removal that large-diameter long workpieces require.

Control: Siemens 840D sl and CELOS

The CTX Gamma 3000 TC runs the Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl, the standard control platform for complex multi-axis turn-mill work, paired with DMG Mori's CELOS app-based operating environment on a 21.5-inch ERGOline multi-touch panel. CELOS integrates job management, tool data, machine documentation, and process monitoring at the control face. The Siemens 840D sl handles simultaneous 5-axis interpolation across the C, X, Y, Z, and B axes without requiring post-processor workarounds. Any programmer already working with 5-axis turn-mill operations knows this control.
