Micro Machining: The Shop Floor Is Heading From Tenths to Atoms

You probably measure in tenths. A tenth of a thousandth of an inch is 2.54 microns, and on most jobs, holding it is a good day. But some parts are designed below that line: medical components, optics, mold inserts and the tiny machines that may come next. Micro machining is where the next shift of precision lives.

It did not start with a startup or a press release. It started with a professor in Tokyo, a machine in a California lab and a lesson every precision shop already knows: at small enough scales, the enemy is not the cutter. It is heat, vibration and the limits of measurement.

A Professor Drew the Map in 1974

In 1974, Norio Taniguchi of Tokyo University of Science presented a paper titled On the Basic Concept of Nano-Technology. He is credited with coining the word. He described it as processing that "mainly consists of the processing of separation, consolidation, and deformation of materials by one atom or one molecule."

Taniguchi had studied how machining accuracy improved from 1940 into the early 1970s, and he correctly predicted that accuracies better than 100 nanometers would be achievable by the late 1980s. His chart of achievable accuracy over time split the work into three bands. Writing in Production Machining in 2009, Chris Koepfer summarized them:

Koepfer noted that Mori Seiki's commissioned history, Path of Precision, called the chart the mechanical complement to Moore's Law. He also noted that micro machining, which sounded like science fiction in the early 1980s, was being offered by a growing number of shops by 2009.

Livermore Proved It Could Be Done, and What It Costs

At Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the Large Optics Diamond Turning Machine went into operation in the early 1980s to make large aspherical metal mirrors for the Department of Defense. According to the lab's Science and Technology Review in 2001, it handled workpieces up to 1.65 meters in diameter and 1,360 kg, and machined them to tolerances of 28 nanometers, more than 1,000 times more accurate than a conventional machine tool.

What it took to get there is the real lesson. Seven laser interferometers on a super invar metrology frame measured the tool's position against the part continuously. Enclosure air and cutting oil were held at 20 degrees C. After setup, the crew waited at least 12 hours before cutting so the heat from their own bodies could dissipate, and nobody stood inside the enclosure while it cut. One engineer said the team spent about 80 percent of its time keeping the machine running properly.

The machine went on to cut secondary mirrors for the Keck telescopes in Hawaii.

What Micro Looks Like on a Production Floor

Forty years later, micron-level work is not limited to national labs.

Tooling has followed the parts down. Harvey Tool offers miniature ball end mills as small as .002 inch in diameter. A cutter that size needs high spindle speed, very low runout and a machine that does not grow as it warms up, or the tool breaks.

Hard materials, no polishing

Builders such as KERN Microtechnik design machines specifically for this work. Modern Machine Shop described the KERN Micro HD as a 5-axis mill that pairs linear motors with micro-gap hydrostatics for stick-slip-free motion. According to KERN, it mills sintered carbide and ceramics with no polishing afterward, including punches for cutting inserts and medical tablets that used to be made by EDM and then polished.

Diamond turning

Ultra-precision diamond turning lathes from builders such as Moore Nanotech and Precitech cut contact lenses, mold inserts and optical components with a diamond tool, producing what the Australian National Fabrication Facility describes as polish-free surface quality.

Then Comes the Atom

Researchers now describe a third stage beyond precision manufacturing. A 2019 paper led by Fengzhou Fang in the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing traced manufacturing from the craft of the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, through precision manufacturing with automatic machinery that moved from millimeters to micrometers to nanometers, to what it called atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing, or ACSM. ACSM removes, adds or transforms material at atomic scales, and the paper ties it to the scanning tunneling microscope, which made it possible to move single atoms.

This is no longer just theory. A 2026 review in Nanomanufacturing and Metrology covered plasma-based atom-selective etching for semiconductor surfaces such as silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride. It cited surface roughness from existing methods measured in fractions of a nanometer, such as an Ra of 0.082 nm from chemical mechanical polishing on silicon.

Machines Built From Code

The newest entry is not a machine tool builder at all. On October 7, 2026, a company called Atomic Machines came out of six years in stealth with $250 million raised, according to its press release. Its founder and CEO, Jeff Holden, was Amazon's tenth engineer and Uber's first chief product officer.

The company describes its Matter Compiler as an AI-native, all-digital manufacturing system with no hard tooling, where code alone determines the device, with feature sizes down to single-digit microns. Every operation is measured with high-precision metrology and corrected in real time. Its first product is a relay for 800-volt DC data center power in a 9.5 by 3 mm sealed package. "We're making machines programmable," Holden said in the release. These are the company's own claims, but the direction is clear: measure everything, correct in real time and build smaller.

Livermore in 1983 and Atomic Machines in 2026 say the same thing in different words: at small scales, the machine that wins is the one that controls heat, controls vibration and measures what it makes. That is true on a used VMC holding tenths, too.

What It Means for Your Floor

You do not need a 28-nanometer diamond lathe to use these lessons. If your parts are moving toward tighter tolerances or smaller features, the same three things decide the result:

• Heat. Warm-up cycles, thermal compensation, coolant temperature and a stable room all matter more as tolerances shrink.
• Vibration and stiffness. The base, the ways and the spindle bearings decide what surface finish is possible. We looked at machine bases in Something Damps Better Than Cast Iron.

• Spindle runout and speed. Small tools need high rpm and very low runout. On a used machine, measure runout before you buy.

When you shop for a used machine for precision work, ask about the thermal compensation, the spindle hours and runout, linear scales and the room it ran in. Those details tell you more about tight-tolerance capability than the year on the nameplate.

The Next Shift

Taniguchi drew the map in 1974. Livermore proved the nanometer was reachable in the 1980s. Production shops picked up micron work, and researchers are now working at the scale of single atoms. The tools keep getting smaller. The fundamentals do not: control the heat, control the vibration and measure everything.
