Used FANUC Robodrill: The Tapping Machine Built by the Company That Makes the Control

What is the FANUC Robodrill?

The FANUC Robodrill is a compact, high-speed machining center built by FANUC, the company that also makes the CNC control and servo drives inside it. It uses a No. 30 (BT30) spindle taper and is built around fast, servo-driven motion and extremely quick tool changes, which is why it started life as a drilling and tapping machine and grew into a full compact machining center for milling, boring, and tapping. With more than 210,000 machines installed since 1972, the Robodrill is the best-selling machine in its class. It is the workhorse behind high-hole-count, tapping-heavy work in automotive, electronics, medical, and precision batch production, and because FANUC builds the machine and its control as one system, it has a reputation for reliability and uptime that drives strong demand on the used market.

Most machine tools are built by one company and run a control made by another. The builder buys the brain, bolts it on, and hopes the two get along. The FANUC Robodrill is the rare machine where that seam does not exist. FANUC is the largest maker of CNC controls in the world, and the Robodrill is FANUC putting its own control, its own servos, and its own machine around a single job and refusing to compromise on the handoff. That integration is the whole reason this little BT30 machine became the best-selling one in its class.

This is a working machinist's breakdown of the Robodrill: where it comes from, why the 30-taper spindle and the fast tool change define what it is good at, how the family is laid out, what U.S. parts and service look like, how it stacks up against the machines shops cross-shop against it, and what to check before you buy a used one. If you run tapping-heavy, high-volume parts, or you are weighing a Robodrill against a Brother Speedio or a 40-taper VMC, this is the piece that tells you what each one is actually for.

Where the Robodrill Comes From

FANUC is not a machine tool builder first. It is a controls and automation company, the dominant name in CNC controls, servo motors, and industrial robots, based in Oshino, Japan, near Mount Fuji. The Robodrill is part of FANUC's Robomachine line, the family of machines FANUC builds around its own controls and drives. That heritage matters, because when the same company designs the control, the servos, and the machine, the motion can be tuned as one system instead of three parts negotiating with each other.

The Robodrill has been in production since 1972, and FANUC reports more than 210,000 of them installed worldwide, which makes it the best-selling machine in its class. That install base is not a trophy, it is a practical fact for a buyer: a machine that common has a deep pool of operators who know it, parts that are widely available, and a proven service path. When you buy into the Robodrill, you are buying into an ecosystem, not an orphan.

Most builders buy their control off the shelf and bolt it on. FANUC makes the control, the servos, and the machine, then tunes all three as one. On the Robodrill, there is no seam between the brain and the iron.

The 30-Taper Speed Machine

The Robodrill is a No. 30 taper machine, a BT30 spindle, and that choice defines everything about it. A 30-taper spindle is smaller and lighter than the 40-taper found on most general-purpose vertical machining centers. It cannot take the heavy roughing cuts a 40-taper can, and that is the tradeoff. What it gets in return is speed. Less mass to accelerate means faster rapids, faster spindle response, and much faster tool changes, and on the kind of work the Robodrill was built for, tool change time and rapid moves are where the cycle time actually lives.

The numbers are the point. On the current alpha-DiB5 generation, FANUC rates tool-to-tool changes at around 0.7 to 0.9 seconds and chip-to-chip times near 1.3 to 1.5 seconds. On a part with dozens of holes, each needing a drill, a chamfer, and a tap, those fractions of a second multiply into real money. A machine that changes tools twice as fast on a part with forty tool changes is not a little quicker, it is a different cost per part. Spindle options run from around 10,000 RPM on standard machines up to 24,000 RPM on high-speed versions, and the whole thing is driven by FANUC's own servo control, which is tuned to hold precision even at those high feeds. That is the Robodrill's core proposition: small, fast, and relentless on high-cycle work.

Reading the Family

The Robodrill line has evolved through generations, and the model names carry the information you need. The core designation is the D21 platform, offered in three sizes, S, M, and L, which set the travels and the table size. An S is the most compact, an M is the common middle, and an L adds travel for longer parts. The generation shows up in the suffix, moving through the alpha-DiA, alpha-DiB, and alpha-DiB5 and Plus series over the years, each bringing faster changes and updated controls. Machines also come in standard and advanced versions, with the advanced trims squeezing out the quickest tool-change and cut-to-cut times.

Reading a used listing, the things that matter most are the size (S, M, or L), the generation, the spindle speed (10,000 versus 24,000 RPM), the tool magazine capacity, and whether a fourth or fifth axis or a tombstone setup is included. A 24,000 RPM advanced machine with a 4th axis is a very different tool, and a very different price, from a base 10,000 RPM machine, even if both say Robodrill D21 on the casting.

The Problem It Was Designed Around

Picture the part the Robodrill was born to make: a plate or a housing with a high count of holes, many of them tapped, that has to be produced in volume at a low cost per piece. Automotive is full of these, brackets, manifolds, housings, anything with a lot of fastener holes. On a heavy 40-taper VMC, that part is over-machined: you are paying for roughing capacity you never use while the slow tool changes eat your cycle time hole by hole. The Robodrill flips the priority. It gives up the heavy cut you do not need and spends everything on the speed you do, sub-second tool changes and fast rapids through a long sequence of light drilling and tapping operations.

That is why shops buy them in banks, sometimes with a robot or a pallet system tending several at once. When the work is high-volume and tapping-heavy, one fast small-taper machine beats one slow big-taper machine, and several Robodrills tended by automation beat almost anything on cost per part. The machine was designed around cycle time on high-cycle work, and it wins exactly that fight.

U.S. Parts and Service

FANUC America supports the Robodrill in the United States, and Methods Machine Tools has long distributed and serviced it as well, so there is a real domestic service and parts channel behind the machine. That is a genuine advantage for a used buyer: FANUC controls are the most common controls in the world, technicians who know them are everywhere, and the Robodrill's huge install base means parts and knowledge are not hard to find. The honest counterpoint is cost. FANUC parts, spindle assemblies in particular, are not cheap, and the FANUC control has a learning curve for anyone coming from a different brand. Neither is a dealbreaker, but both belong in the budget and the plan.

How the Robodrill Compares

The Robodrill sits in the 30-taper drill-tap and compact machining center class, and shops usually cross-shop it against a short, specific list.

Machine Origin Control Distinctive Strength
FANUC Robodrill Japan FANUC (in-house) Machine and control from one maker, huge install base, high-speed surfacing on the FANUC 31i
Brother Speedio Japan Brother (in-house) Rigid build and fast, refined machine, often praised for fit and finish
Haas DM / DT USA Haas Lower entry cost and broad U.S. support, the value drill-tap option
General 40-taper VMC Various Various Heavier cuts and bigger envelope, but slower changes and higher cost per hole

The Brother Speedio is the closest rival and a genuinely excellent machine, often praised for its rigidity, build quality, and refinement, and many shops prefer its control and dealer network. The Haas DM and DT machines make the value argument, lower cost to get into a drill-tap machine with Haas's wide U.S. support. A general 40-taper VMC makes the heavy-cut argument, more roughing and a bigger box, at the cost of speed and cost per hole. The Robodrill wins the order on the strength of the integrated FANUC package: the machine and the control are one system, the FANUC 31i handles high-speed surfacing well, and the enormous install base makes it a safe, well-supported bet, especially secondhand. When a shop wants proven high-speed tapping capacity with parts and know-how everywhere, the Robodrill is usually on the short list.

Used-Market Pricing

The Robodrill holds value well for a compact machine, because demand is broad and the install base keeps it liquid. The following ranges are orientation from current secondary-market activity, not quotes, and generation, spindle speed, hours, tooling, and any fourth axis or automation move the number more than year alone. Dealer listings are frequently request-price.

  • Older, higher-hour machines with 10,000 RPM spindles: often close to $15,000 to $35,000, depending on condition and generation.
  • Newer alpha-DiB and DiB5 machines, especially 24,000 RPM and advanced versions with low hours: often close to $45,000 to $90,000 and up.
  • Machines with a fourth or fifth axis, tombstone setups, or robot and pallet automation carry a premium over a bare base machine.

The single biggest swings on price are the spindle speed and the generation. A 24,000 RPM advanced machine costs meaningfully more than a 10,000 RPM base machine, and it is worth more later too, so match the spindle and the generation to the work rather than buying on the model name alone.

What to Check When Buying a Used Robodrill

Spindle condition and hours. Check the BT30 spindle for runout, bearing noise, and heat at speed, and ask for spindle hours and any rebuild history. On a high-RPM machine especially, the spindle is the most expensive thing to fix, so make it a make-or-break check.

Control generation. Identify the FANUC control, an older 0i or a newer 31i, and confirm it is a supported generation with available parts. The control drives both capability and long-term serviceability.

Tool changer and ATC arm. The fast tool change is the Robodrill's whole reason to exist, so run the changer repeatedly. Watch for hesitation, misindex, or wear in the ATC mechanism, since that is a high-cycle wear item.

Ballscrews and ways. Check for backlash and wear in the axes. A machine run hard in high-volume production can have real hours on the ballscrews, and worn motion shows up as lost accuracy.

Spindle speed and generation match. Confirm you are actually getting the spindle speed and generation you are paying for, since a 10,000 and a 24,000 RPM machine can look identical from across the shop but are very different tools.

Fourth or fifth axis and tombstone. If the machine includes a rotary or a tombstone setup, confirm it functions, is calibrated, and includes the needed control options, because these add real value when present and real cost to add later.

Coolant and chip management. Check the coolant system, including any through-spindle coolant, and how chips clear. Through-spindle coolant is common on tapping machines and expensive to repair.

Way covers and general condition. Look at way covers, seals, and overall care. A Robodrill run in a clean cell tends to be in far better shape than one that lived under a chip pile in high production.

Included tooling and documentation. Confirm what BT30 tooling, vises, fixtures, and manuals come with it, and get parameter backups if available. Tooling and options add up quickly and are slow to source separately.

Who Actually Runs Them

The Robodrill lives wherever high hole counts meet high volume. Automotive and its suppliers run them hard on tapping-intensive parts, often in banks tended by robots. Electronics and connector makers use them for fast, precise, small-part production. Medical and dental manufacturers, including implant and instrument shops, rely on their speed and repeatability on small precision parts. Mold shops and prototype shops use them for fast, accurate work that does not need a big roughing envelope. And plenty of general job shops keep one as their fast machine, the one that eats high-cycle tapping jobs that would bog down a 40-taper. What they share is a workload built on speed and repetition rather than heavy metal removal, which is exactly the fight the Robodrill was engineered to win.

Resell CNC Take

The Robodrill is one of the safest used buys in the compact class, precisely because there are so many of them and FANUC stands behind the control. We tell buyers to be clear-eyed about two things: it is a 30-taper, so do not expect it to hog metal like a 40-taper, and match the spindle speed and generation to your actual work instead of chasing the badge. Nail the spindle check and the control generation, buy the right size and speed for the job, and a used Robodrill will run fast and reliably for years. For high-volume tapping, few machines earn their keep as consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the FANUC Robodrill?

The FANUC Robodrill is a compact, high-speed BT30 machining center built by FANUC, the same company that makes the CNC control and servo drives inside it. It began as a drilling and tapping machine and grew into a full compact machining center. With more than 210,000 installed since 1972, it is the best-selling machine in its class, used heavily for high-hole-count, tapping-intensive work in automotive, electronics, medical, and precision batch production.

What does the 30-taper spindle mean for what it can do?

A No. 30 (BT30) spindle is smaller and lighter than the 40-taper on most general VMCs. It cannot take the same heavy roughing cuts, but the lower mass allows much faster tool changes, rapids, and spindle response. That makes the Robodrill excel at high-cycle drilling and tapping, where change time and rapid moves, not heavy cutting, drive the cost per part.

How fast are the Robodrill's tool changes?

On the current alpha-DiB5 generation, FANUC rates tool-to-tool changes at roughly 0.7 to 0.9 seconds and chip-to-chip times near 1.3 to 1.5 seconds, with the advanced versions the quickest. On a part with dozens of tool changes, that speed compounds into a meaningfully lower cost per part.

Robodrill or Brother Speedio?

Both are excellent in-house-built 30-taper machines. The Speedio is often praised for rigidity, build quality, and refinement, and some shops prefer its control and dealer network. The Robodrill's edge is the fully integrated FANUC package, the world's most common control, huge install base, strong high-speed surfacing, and easy parts and service, which also makes it a safer used buy.

Can you still get parts and service in the United States?

Yes. FANUC America supports the Robodrill, and Methods Machine Tools has long distributed and serviced it. FANUC controls are the most common in the world, so technicians and parts are widely available. The tradeoff is that FANUC parts, spindles especially, are not cheap, and the control has a learning curve for those new to it.

How much does a used Robodrill cost?

As orientation, older 10,000 RPM machines often land close to $15,000 to $35,000, while newer alpha-DiB and DiB5 machines, especially 24,000 RPM advanced versions with low hours, often run close to $45,000 to $90,000 and up. A fourth axis, tombstone, or automation adds a premium. Spindle speed and generation move the price more than year alone, and dealer listings are frequently request-price.
