Used Haas DS-30Y: The Second Spindle Has Half the Torque

A dual-spindle lathe is sold on one idea: the part comes off the machine finished on both ends. On a Haas DS-30Y, the two spindles that make that possible are not equals, and the shops that get the most out of one plan around it.

The Haas DS-30Y is the Y-axis version of the Haas DS-30, Haas's dual-spindle lathe. Our Next Shift on Done In One makes the case for finishing parts in one setup. This one is about the machine Haas built to do it on a lathe, and the one spec that decides how well it does.

Two Spindles on One Bed

Haas Automation describes the DS-30Y as a dual-spindle lathe with Y and C axes and live tooling, built to finish parts in one setup, with opposed spindles for synchronized turning and quick part transfer. Here are the two spindles side by side, from Haas's published specs.

Haas's page lists two different figures for maximum part swing, 21 inches in the spec table and 31.75 inches in a footnote. Confirm swing on the machine if your parts are near the limit.

Half the Torque on the Back Side

Here's the part most buyers miss: the DS-30Y's sub-spindle is a smaller spindle. It has half the horsepower, about half the torque and a smaller chuck than the main.

That is normal for a dual-spindle lathe. The sub-spindle exists to grip a part that has already been turned and finish the back side: face it, chamfer it, drill it, maybe turn a short diameter. It is not built to rough a heavy bar.

It changes how you plan the job. Put the heavy turning, the big drills and the deep cuts on the main spindle, where the 30 hp and 275 ft-lb are. Leave the lighter work for the sub. A part that needs heavy cuts on both ends may run better as two ops on the main spindle, or on a bigger machine.

The 8.3 inch sub chuck sets a limit too. The part has to fit and grip in the smaller chuck after transfer. Check your largest back-side diameter before you count on finishing it in one setup.

What One Setup Buys

When the job fits, the payoff is real. The part transfers from main to sub inside the machine, the turret works the back side, and a finished part drops into the catcher. There is no second machine, no second fixture and no operator flipping parts between ops.

Add the Y axis and the DS-30Y can mill flats, cut pockets and drill off-center holes on either end with its live tools. With a 3 inch bar feeder on the main spindle, it can run that cycle part after part.

That is why the DS-30Y suits families of turned parts with features on both ends, such as fittings, shafts with cross holes and flanges. For simple parts with nothing on the back, a single-spindle lathe does the same work for less.

What to Check on a Used DS-30Y

Check both spindles. Run each one through its full speed range on its own. Listen to the bearings, check the temperature and check runout at each chuck.

Run a part transfer. Have the machine hand a part from main to sub and back. The transfer should be smooth and repeatable, with the part seated the same way every time.

Test the Y axis and live tools. Run the Y through its full travel, run every live tool station at speed and confirm the C axis indexes and brakes cleanly on both spindles.

Index the turret. Cycle all 12 stations and check that each one locks up repeatably.

Confirm the options. A parts catcher, bar feeder interface, tool probe and the right software options change what the machine can do unattended. Check the control generation too.

Plan the Back Side

The DS-30Y finishes parts in one setup when the job is planned for it: heavy work on the main, light work on the sub and a back side that fits the 8.3 inch chuck. Plan it that way and the second spindle does the work of a second machine.

Resell CNC Take

Buy a DS-30Y for turned parts with real work on both ends. Before you buy, lay out your back-side ops against a 15 hp, 8.3 inch chuck sub-spindle. If they fit, the machine replaces a second op. If they do not, buy the lathe for the front side and keep the mill for the back.
