Used Mazak HCN-6000 and HCN-6800: The Pallet-Changer Workhorse in Two Sizes

What are the Mazak HCN-6000 and HCN-6800?

The Mazak HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 are horizontal machining centers, the pallet-changing production workhorses in Mazak's HCN line, and they are the same machine in two sizes. The HCN-6000 runs a 500 mm pallet, the HCN-6800 runs a 630 mm pallet, and both come standard with a two-pallet changer, a CAT 50 spindle, a rotary B-axis, and large tool magazines. A horizontal machining center lays the spindle on its side so chips fall away from the cut instead of piling on the part, and the two-pallet changer lets an operator load one part while the machine cuts the other, which is what makes these machines built for high-volume, lights-out production. Both are workhorse HMCs used across automotive, energy, aerospace, and general production, and both are common and well-supported on the used market. For a buyer, the choice between them comes down to part size, the 6000 for smaller work, the 6800 for larger, heavier parts.

There is a moment every growing production shop hits. The verticals are running flat out, the operators are spending half their time flipping and re-fixturing parts, chips are packing into the pockets and getting recut, and the spindles are sitting idle between every part while somebody loads the next one. The work is there, but the machines cannot keep up with it, not because they are slow in the cut, but because they spend too much of the day not cutting. That is the problem the horizontal machining center was built to solve, and the Mazak HCN is one of the machines shops reach for when they hit that wall.

The HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 are the middle of Mazak's horizontal lineup, the two sizes that land in the most shops. This is a working breakdown of what a horizontal machining center actually buys you, how the HCN is built, what separates the 6000 from the 6800, how they stack up against the other HMCs you would cross-shop, and what to look for when you buy one used.

Where the HCN Comes From

Mazak, formally Yamazaki Mazak, is one of the largest machine tool builders in the world, a Japanese company with a deep line of turning centers, machining centers, multitasking machines, and lasers, and its own Mazatrol control. The HCN line is Mazak's core horizontal machining center family, built specifically for production. Where a vertical machining center is the general-purpose workhorse most shops start with, the horizontal is the machine a shop adds when volume and uptime become the priority, and the HCN has been Mazak's answer in that space for years.

The HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 have run across multiple generations, including the widely sold II series, and they have carried Mazak controls through several eras: the Matrix and Matrix Nexus controls on earlier machines, then the Mazatrol SmoothG and later SmoothAi on newer builds. That long production run is good news for a used buyer, because it means a deep installed base, mature and debugged designs, and plenty of parts, service, and operators who already know the machine.

Why Horizontal: Chips Fall Away

The single biggest reason to run a horizontal is gravity. On a vertical machining center the spindle points down, so chips fall straight into the pocket and onto the part, where they get recut, hold heat against the workpiece, and have to be cleared. On a horizontal the spindle is on its side and the part faces sideways, so chips fall straight down and out of the cut, into the conveyor, and away. That sounds simple, but it changes everything about how the machine runs unattended. Chips that leave the cut mean less recutting, better tool life, less heat in the part, and a machine that can run long stretches without someone standing there clearing chips. For heavy metal removal and long production runs, that chip evacuation is the whole game.

The HCN backs that up with a rigid build and a CAT 50 spindle. CAT 50 is the big spindle taper, built for grunt: heavy cuts, big tools, and the kind of metal removal that production work demands, as opposed to the lighter, faster CAT 40 that dominates verticals. Both the HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 run a 10,000 rpm CAT 50 spindle in standard form, with high-speed, high-torque, and hard-metal spindle options for shops with specific needs. The combination of horizontal chip flow and a big, rigid spindle is what makes the HCN a metal-removing production machine rather than a general-purpose mill.

The Two-Pallet Changer: The Spindle Never Waits

The second reason to run an HCN is the pallet changer, and it is the feature that pays for the machine. Both the HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 come standard with a two-pallet changer. While the machine is cutting a part on the pallet inside, the operator is unloading the finished part and loading raw stock on the second pallet, out front, in the clear. When the cut finishes, the pallets swap in seconds and the machine goes straight back to cutting. The spindle almost never waits on a human. On a single-table machine, every load and unload is spindle downtime, and on high-volume work that idle time adds up to a huge share of the day. The pallet changer takes most of it back.

That is also the on-ramp to real automation. The HCN platform is built to expand into a Mazak PALLETECH pallet pool, where a rack of pallets and a loader feed the machine dozens of jobs in sequence, so it can run through the night and the weekend with no one at the controls. Both machines also carry a rotary B-axis table that indexes the part to present multiple faces to the spindle, the HCN-6000 indexing as fine as a thousandth of a degree, so a part can be machined on several sides in one setup without being re-fixtured. Chips fall away, the pallet keeps the spindle fed, and the B-axis turns the part to the tool. Every one of those is aimed at the same target: keep the spindle cutting.

A vertical machine makes parts. A horizontal machine makes parts while you sleep. The difference is not spindle speed, it is that chips fall away and the pallet changer keeps the spindle cutting instead of waiting on a person.

HCN-6000 vs HCN-6800: Reading the Size

The number in the name tracks the pallet, and the pallet sets the whole machine's size class. The HCN-6000 runs a 500 mm (roughly 19.7 inch) pallet, carries around 1,000 kg per pallet, and gives about 31.5 inches of travel on all three axes, with a CAT 50 10,000 rpm spindle rated near 37 kW and 350 Nm, rapids to 60 meters per minute, and a tool magazine that scales up to 120 tools. It is the 500 mm-class workhorse, sized for the large population of production parts that fit comfortably in that envelope.

The HCN-6800 steps up to a 630 mm (roughly 24.8 inch) pallet, carries around 1,500 kg, and opens up the work envelope to about 41 inches in X, 35 in Y, and 39 in Z, on a 50 hp CAT 50 spindle, with an 80-tool magazine standard and a fast chip-to-chip tool change. It is the same idea built bigger, for larger and heavier parts. The rule of thumb is simple: pick the size by the part. If your work fits a 500 mm pallet and the weights are moderate, the HCN-6000 is the efficient choice. If your parts are bigger or heavier, or you want the room to grow, the HCN-6800 is the one. The rest of the machine, the pallet changer, the CAT 50 spindle, the B-axis, and the automation path, carries across both.

Worth knowing: the HCN family extends past these two, with smaller and larger siblings in the line, and most machines carry a generation marker such as II. When you shop used, the pallet number tells you the size, the generation and control tell you the era, and the spindle and options tell you what it was built to do.

The Problem It Was Designed Around

Everything about the HCN points at one number: spindle utilization, the share of the day the spindle is actually cutting. On a manual-load vertical, that number is often shockingly low, because the spindle stops for every load, every chip clearing, and every part flip. The HCN attacks all three. The pallet changer removes the load and unload from the spindle's time. The horizontal layout removes the chip clearing. The B-axis and multi-face fixturing remove the part flips. Add a pallet pool and the machine keeps running when the shop lights are off.

That is why an HCN can look expensive next to a vertical on paper and still be the cheaper machine per part. A shop is not buying spindle speed, it is buying spindle hours. When a machine cuts through the night on a rack of pallets instead of sitting idle between manual loads, the cost per part drops, and the machine pays for itself in throughput. That economic logic is the entire reason horizontals exist, and it is why they are the backbone of high-volume production shops.

U.S. Service and Parts

Mazak has one of the deepest support footprints in North America, anchored by its large campus in Florence, Kentucky, along with regional technology and technical centers and a wide distributor and service network. For a used buyer that matters, because parts, service, and applications help for the HCN and its Mazatrol controls are widely available, and there is a large pool of technicians and programmers who already know the machine. A used HCN is not an orphan, it is one of the most supported production machines you can buy secondhand. Resell CNC is also the only used CNC dealer in North America with Official Mazak Trade-In Center status, so Mazak iron is squarely in our lane.

How the HCN Compares

Machine Builder / HQ Distinctive Strength
Mazak HCN-6000 / 6800 Mazak, Japan Huge installed base, Mazatrol control, deep U.S. support and automation path
Makino a-Series Makino, Japan Premium accuracy and thermal stability, die-mold and precision favorite
DMG MORI NHX Japan / Germany Broad global HMC range and advanced automation options
DN Solutions (Doosan) NHP South Korea Strong value and a large, growing support network

Each is a real machine with a real argument. Makino's a-series is the accuracy and die-mold favorite and often the premium pick. DMG MORI's NHX line offers a broad global range with heavy emphasis on automation. DN Solutions competes hard on value with its NHP horizontals. Mazak's argument for the HCN is breadth of ownership and support: it is one of the most common HMCs on the floor, backed by one of the deepest service networks in North America, with a clean path from a standalone two-pallet machine up to a full pallet pool. For a shop that wants a proven production HMC that is easy to support, staff, and grow, that is exactly what the HCN offers, and on the used market that ubiquity is an advantage.

Used-Market Value

HCN machines hold value well because they are production tools with long service lives and a huge support base, and because demand for a proven, well-supported HMC stays strong. Pricing on the used market is driven less by age alone than by generation, control, spindle option, pallet count, and hours. As a rough guide to current secondary-market activity, and with the caveat that many dealer listings are request-price rather than posted:

Earlier HCN-6000, Matrix-era (roughly mid-2000s to early 2010s). The value entry point into a 500 mm Mazak HMC, typically the lowest-priced way onto the platform, priced on hours and condition.

Later HCN-6000, Smooth-era (roughly mid-2010s on). A step up for the newer control, faster processing, and generally lower hours, and the sweet spot for many buyers who want a modern machine without new-machine money.

HCN-6800, by era and configuration. Priced above the 6000 for its larger pallet and envelope, with pallet-pool machines, high-spec spindles, and low-hour late-model examples commanding the top of the range. Tell us the parts and we will pin down where a given machine should land.

What to Check on a Used HCN

Spindle condition. Check the CAT 50 spindle for runout, bearing noise, and heat, and confirm which spindle option the machine has, since standard, high-speed, high-torque, and hard-metal spindles are different machines for different work.

Pallet changer and pallets. Cycle the two-pallet changer and check the clamp, the receiver cones, and repeatability. Confirm how many pallets and fixtures come with it, since pallets and tombstones carry real cost.

B-axis rotary table. Index the B-axis and check for backlash, clamping, and positioning accuracy, since the rotary is central to multi-face work and expensive to repair.

Ways, ball screws, and rapids. Confirm the linear axes are tight and hold geometry, and that rapids and feeds run without noise or fault.

Control and generation. Identify the control, Matrix, Matrix Nexus, Mazatrol SmoothG, or SmoothAi, confirm it is supported, and verify your programming and CAM post fit it.

Tool magazine and ATC. Run the tool changer through a full cycle, check the magazine count, and confirm chip-to-chip time and reliability.

Automation and options. Confirm whether the machine is a standalone two-pallet unit or tied to a pallet pool, and check for probing, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, and other options that add real value.

Hours and maintenance. Ask for spindle hours and maintenance history. On a production machine that ran hard, condition and upkeep matter as much as model year.

Who Runs an HCN

The HCN lands in shops where volume and uptime drive the decision. Automotive and tier suppliers run them for high-volume machined components. Energy and oil-country shops run them for valves, manifolds, and housings. Aerospace and defense shops use them for aluminum and tough-alloy parts that benefit from horizontal chip flow. General contract and production shops add an HCN when their verticals cannot keep up and they need a machine that runs unattended. The common thread is a shop that has moved past making one part at a time and needs to make a lot of parts, reliably, with the spindle cutting as close to around the clock as it can. That is the shop the HCN was built for.

Resell CNC Take

The HCN-6000 and HCN-6800 are among the safer used HMC buys out there, because they are everywhere, they are supported everywhere, and they were built to run. As an Official Mazak Trade-In Center, we see a lot of them, and the decision almost always comes down to size, generation, and configuration. Match the pallet to your parts, pick the control era you want to live with, and confirm the spindle and pallet changer are healthy. Tell us the parts, the volumes, and whether you want to grow into a pallet pool, and we will tell you whether a used HCN is the machine, and which size and spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Mazak HCN-6000 and HCN-6800?

They are horizontal machining centers in Mazak's HCN production line, the same machine in two sizes. The HCN-6000 runs a 500 mm pallet and the HCN-6800 runs a 630 mm pallet, and both come standard with a two-pallet changer, a CAT 50 spindle, a rotary B-axis, and large tool magazines. The horizontal layout lets chips fall away from the cut, and the pallet changer keeps the spindle cutting, which makes them built for high-volume, lights-out production.

What is the difference between the HCN-6000 and HCN-6800?

Mainly size. The HCN-6000 uses a 500 mm pallet, carries around 1,000 kg, and gives about 31.5 inches of travel in each axis. The HCN-6800 uses a 630 mm pallet, carries around 1,500 kg, and opens the envelope to roughly 41 by 35 by 39 inches. Pick the 6000 for smaller, moderate-weight parts and the 6800 for larger or heavier work. The pallet changer, CAT 50 spindle, B-axis, and automation path carry across both.

Why choose a horizontal machining center over a vertical?

The big reasons are chip flow and uptime. On a horizontal the spindle is on its side, so chips fall away from the cut instead of piling on the part, which helps tool life, part accuracy, and unattended running. Combined with a two-pallet changer that loads one part while the other is cutting, a horizontal keeps the spindle cutting far more of the day, which lowers cost per part on high-volume work.

What control does the HCN use?

It depends on the year. Earlier HCN machines use Mazak's Matrix and Matrix Nexus controls, while newer ones use the Mazatrol SmoothG and later SmoothAi. On a used machine, confirm the exact control and generation, that it is supported, and that your programming and CAM post fit it. All are well-supported Mazak controls with a large base of trained operators.

Can an HCN run lights-out or with automation?

Yes, that is a core reason to buy one. Both come standard with a two-pallet changer, and the HCN platform is built to expand into a Mazak PALLETECH pallet pool, where a rack of pallets and a loader feed the machine many jobs in sequence. That lets an HCN run through nights and weekends with little or no attendance, which is where the machine earns its keep.

Is a used Mazak HCN worth buying?

Often yes. The HCN is one of the most common and best-supported HMCs on the used market, so parts, service, and operators are easy to find, and the machines hold value because they are proven production tools. A clean, well-maintained used HCN can put lights-out production capability on the floor for far less than new. The keys are checking the spindle, pallet changer, and B-axis, confirming the control, and matching the size and configuration to your work.
