Used Mazak VTC-300C: Same 65 Inches Since the 1990s, Three Controls

A used Mazak VTC-300C from 1996 and one from 2019 can have nearly the same 65 x 30 x 26 inch envelope over the same fixed table. They are not the same machine. Three control generations and three spindle speeds separate them, and the listing title will not tell you which one you are looking at.

The Table Stays Put

VTC stands for Vertical Travelling Column, in Mazak's spelling. The table is fixed and the column carries the spindle along X. Mazak's U.S. product page says the large X stroke handles long parts in a small floor space, and that the fixed table makes robots and hydraulic fixtures easy to install, because nothing under them moves.

On the Mazak VTC-300C, that fixed table is 78.74 x 30 inches, according to Mazak's U.S. virtual showroom. An optional table center partition splits it into two work areas, so one part can run while the other side is set up. Mazak builds VTC Series machines at its plant in Florence, Kentucky, according to Cutting Tool Engineering's 2025 coverage of the plant's 40,000th machine.

Mazak has also built special versions on this platform. In 2019, Modern Machine Shop covered the VTC-300C FSW, a hybrid that adds friction stir welding to milling for joining low-melting-point alloys. You are unlikely to find one used, but it shows how long Mazak has kept building on the 300C.

Thirty Years, Three Controls

Here is the part most buyers miss: the travels on a VTC-300C have barely moved, so the travels do not date the machine. The control does. Mazak does not publish a generation history for the 300C, but dealer listings for 1996 through 2019 machines show a clear pattern.

These are listing patterns, not Mazak's own history, and there are exceptions. Forum thread titles also mention VTC-300Cs with Matrix Nexus controls. A 2011 machine listed by a dealer still ran the Fusion 640M, with a 12,000 rpm spindle rated at 25 hp for 5 minutes and 15 hp for 30, a 48-tool servo magazine and 1,181 ipm rapids. Read the control screen and the spindle plate, not the year.

The VTC-300C II and the Extra X

Some listings, mostly European, describe a Mazak VTC-300C II. Those listings commonly show 1,740 mm of X travel, against the 1,670 mm Mazak lists for the U.S. VTC-300C today, along with 12,000 rpm and a 30-tool magazine. Mazak's European VTC page says its machines are built at its plant in Worcester, England, so a different build may explain the difference. Mazak does not explain it, and we would not price a machine on it. Measure the X travel on the machine in front of you.

Table Load and Tool Limits

Dealer copies of Mazak's spec sheet list the table at about 3,300 lb, evenly distributed. European listings give 1,400 kg, which is close. A fixed table carries a heavy fixture without loading an X-axis drive, which is one of the reasons the design exists. It still has a rating, so check it against your fixture and part.

The 2011 machine's listing gives its 48-tool magazine's limits as tools up to 13.78 inches long and 17.6 lb, with a diameter limit that depends on which pockets are filled. Confirm these against the magazine on the machine you are buying, because magazine options changed over the years.

What to Check on a Used VTC-300C

Read the control and the spindle. M-Plus, Fusion 640M, Matrix or SmoothG, and 10,000, 12,000 or 15,000 rpm. That sets the price more than the year.

Indicate X along the full travel. The column does all the X work. Check positioning and backlash at both ends of the stroke, not just in the middle.

Look at the column ways and covers. On a traveling column machine, the X way covers run under the column across the whole table length. Look for damage and chips packed underneath.

Run the spindle near top speed. Warm it up, listen to it and check the temperature.

Cycle every tool pocket. Run the full magazine, 24, 30 or 48 tools, and watch the tool changer arm.

Ask about the partition. If you plan to run pendulum, confirm the partition is included and that it fits and seals.

Check the floor plan. A traveling column machine is long. Measure your space and plan for rigging.

Who Runs One

The VTC-300C suits long 40-taper work and shops that run two jobs on one table. Long rails, extrusions, plates and fixtured families of small parts all fit the fixed table. If your parts are longer or heavier, look at the VTC-800, which runs X travel up to 3,000 mm.

Resell CNC Take

The VTC-300C has kept nearly the same envelope for three decades, which makes it easy to buy the wrong one. Read the control screen first, the spindle plate second and the year third. A SmoothG machine at 15,000 rpm and an M-Plus machine at 10,000 rpm share a table, a name and very little else.
