2022 Makino U3 CNC Wire EDM

The Makino U3 is a CNC wire EDM built on the thermally stable, low-upkeep architecture that has kept Makino wire machines earning their floor space in tool rooms, die shops, and aerospace and medical production cells. This 2022 U-series machine carries X, Y and Z travels of 13 in x 9.8 in x 8.7 in plus +/-50 mm of U and V travel, delivering taper capability of +/-15 deg per 100 mm of workpiece thickness for die clearance, draft angles, and blended profiles. The 3-sided U-shape work table measures 630 mm x 450 mm at a 950 mm working height and takes up to 600 kg (1,322 lbs), with a work envelope that accepts parts to 770 mm x 590 mm x 220 mm. Wire electrode range runs 0.10 mm through 0.30 mm diameter, threaded through Makino's PICO round wire guide system for repeatable positioning on fine-wire and small-radius detail. A 250 L work tank fed from a 590 L dielectric reservoir supports fully submerged cutting, and the Hyper i control (EW100A) puts a 24 in class high-definition touchscreen, graphical on-screen programming, onboard digital manuals, and E-Tech Doctor diagnostics in front of the operator.

Set against the Makino U32j, the earlier U-series machine in the same size class, the U3 is a re-engineered platform rather than a refresh. Both cover the same 13 in x 9.8 in x 8.7 in travel envelope, so the U3's gains land in accuracy architecture and daily workflow instead of raw size. The U3 moves to a stationary work table design: the workpiece and its fixture stay put while the machine works around them, which takes table motion out of the accuracy equation and keeps a heavy setup from loading a moving axis. The PICO round wire guide system, repeatable to within 5 microns, replaces the older guide arrangement and removes the trial-and-error from wire changes and tight-radius detail. Tool-less indexing of the energizer contact plates and a non-submerged filter cabinet with air purge convert what used to be scheduled downtime into a few minutes at the front of the machine. For a shop stepping up from a U32j or an older U32, the U3 is the generation of that platform that holds form through long unattended burns and asks less of the operator to get there - which shows up on the floor as tighter parts, longer lights-out runs, and fewer requalifications.

About This Machine

Every tight-tolerance die section, punch, and profiled insert you have been farming out to another shop can come back in-house the week this U3 lands on your floor. Makino's stationary work table design, PICO round wire guides, and the 24 in Hyper i touchscreen make it a current-generation wire platform your team can set up once, trust through a long unattended burn, and hand to any operator on the next shift.
