The O-M OMEGA 50 is a CNC vertical turret lathe from O-M Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, a builder whose focus on vertical turning has made its machines a dependable choice in job shops and heavy-part production. This 2000-built OMEGA 50 carries a 36 in (915 mm) table on an A2-20 spindle nose and is rated for a 39.38 in (1,000 mm) maximum turning diameter, 49.25 in (1,250 mm) maximum swing, and workpieces up to 3,300 lbs (1,500 kg). A 60 HP (37/45 kW) AC table drive with a two-range gearbox covers 4-182 RPM in low and 17.6-800 RPM in high, and the machine is rated for 4,792 lbf-ft of table torque and 5,610 lbf of cutting force for heavy roughing on castings, rings, and flanges. The 7 in square ram provides 31.5 in of vertical (Z) travel, and horizontal (X) travel runs 40 in to the right and 20.25 in to the left of table center, with rapid traverse rates of 551 ipm on X and 472 ipm on Z. Tooling is handled by a 12-station automatic tool changer that accepts holders up to 18.875 in long and 110 lbs with 1-1/4 in square shanks, and cutting feeds range from 0.0001 to 20 in/rev. The machine runs a Fanuc Series 18i-T CNC, a widely supported turning control familiar to programmers and service technicians across North America.
Compared with earlier NC vertical lathes in O-M's lineup, such as the TMS-30/70-NC, the OMEGA 50 represents a more production-focused approach to vertical turning. It pairs a compact single-column ram design with a 12-station automatic tool changer, so one setup can cover roughing, finishing, and boring, and its Fanuc 18i-T brings the processing speed, program storage, and connectivity of Fanuc's i-series generation. For a shop moving up from older NC vertical boring mills, that means quicker setups, shorter cycle times, and easier programming on a control the industry already knows.
