2013 Makino a51 CNC Horizontal Machining Center

The Makino a51 is a 400 mm-class four-axis horizontal machining center built around the rigidity and thermal stability that made the a-series a fixture in high-volume ferrous production. This 2013 unit, serial 3005, carries travels of 22.0 inches in X and 25.2 inches in both Y and Z over twin 400 x 400 mm pallets rated to 880 pounds, with a maximum workpiece envelope of 24.8 inches in diameter by 35.4 inches in length. The spindle turns to 14,000 RPM through a CAT40 taper and is fed by through-spindle coolant. Tooling runs through a 60-station automatic tool changer handling tools to 6.7 inches in diameter, 16.9 inches long and 26.4 pounds, with 0.9-second tool-to-tool and 2.2-second chip-to-chip change times. Rapid traverse reaches 2,362 IPM against a 1,968 IPM cutting feed rate. The Makino Professional-series control carries the look-ahead option for high-speed contouring. Power is 460 VAC three-phase 60 Hz at 74.2 amps full load, with an 88.0-amp largest-motor rating and a 2.5 kA short-circuit current rating.

Against the single-pallet 400 mm horizontals and three-axis vertical mills that shops usually run this class of work on, the a51 changes the economics rather than just the specifications. A twin-pallet changer means the spindle cuts one fixture while an operator loads the other, which removes setup from the cycle instead of shortening it - the difference between a machine that runs sixty percent of the shift and one that runs most of it. The 60-station magazine backs that up: enough tooling capacity to hold several jobs resident at once, so a pallet swap does not become a tool-cart exercise. Compared with a vertical mill of similar travels, the horizontal orientation clears chips by gravity out of the cut instead of recutting them in a pocket, which is why horizontals hold finish and tool life in cast iron and steel where verticals struggle. Add the 14,000-RPM spindle, through-spindle coolant and the control look-ahead package, and this is a machine aimed at unattended ferrous production rather than one-off work.

About This Machine

A twin-pallet 400 mm horizontal is what turns a one-part-at-a-time mill into a cell that keeps cutting while you set up the next job, and that changes what your quoted cycle times can look like. This a51 pairs a 14,000-RPM CAT40 spindle with a 60-station changer and through-spindle coolant under Makino's Professional control, so tight-tolerance ferrous work runs on the rigidity and thermal stability the a-series was built around.
