2010 Okuma MB5000H CNC Horizontal Machining Center

The Okuma MB5000H is a 500 mm-class CNC horizontal machining center from a builder whose reputation rests on thermal stability and on controls that stay useful long after the machine is paid for. It works a 500 x 500 mm pallet rated to 1,100 lbs, with 29.92 inch travels in X and Y, 31.89 inches in Z, and rapid traverse of 2,362 IPM on all three axes. The No. 40 taper spindle turns to 12,000 RPM behind a 40 HP drive and is served by a 110-position automatic tool changer - deep enough to keep several part families resident at once. Pallet handling is a two-pallet automatic changer with full 4th-axis rotation, so one fixture is being unloaded and reloaded at the front while the other is under the spindle. The machine runs the Okuma OSP-P200M control and is equipped with an MP Systems high pressure coolant system, through-spindle coolant, a ConSep 2000 chip conveyor, tool breakage detection, and a spindle probe.

Set against the earlier Okuma MA-500HB it succeeded in the 500 mm class, the MB5000H is faster in the places that actually decide cycle time. The MA generation ran a lower top spindle speed and noticeably slower rapids; at 12,000 RPM and 2,362 IPM on X, Y, and Z, the MB5000H turns the same aluminum and cast-iron work into less air-cutting and shorter chip-to-chip time. The control is the larger jump - the OSP-P200M carries Okuma's Thermo-Friendly thermal compensation, which is what lets a horizontal hold size through a long unattended run rather than drifting as the shop warms up over a shift. Layer on the 110-tool magazine and the two-pallet changer and this is a machine configured for the lights-out horizontal work the MA generation could only approximate.
