2012 Samsung SL-45MC/2200 CNC Lathe

The Samsung SL-45MC/2200 is a large-capacity horizontal turning center built for the work that simply will not fit on a standard chucker. With 30.5 inches of swing over the bed, 24.4 inches of maximum turning diameter, and 88.8 inches of machining length, it takes long shafts, rolls, tubing, and heavy flanged parts in a single setup rather than in pieces. This machine carries a full C-axis with a live milling turret rated at 10 HP, so flats, keyways, and off-center holes get cut on the same machine that turns the part. Fifty horsepower at the spindle against an 1,800 RPM top speed tells you exactly what it was built for: high torque down low, which is what heavy steel actually wants. A hydraulic quill tailstock with a No. 5 Morse taper and a steady rest with 16 inch capacity support long work between centers, and the machine runs a Fanuc 0i-TD control.

Against the shorter-bed SL-45MC configurations, the 2200 in the model designation is the entire point, since it refers to the bed length and stepping up to it is what turns a large chucker into a genuine shaft machine. A standard-bed SL-45 swings the same diameter but runs out of Z travel well short of 88 inches, so long parts either get turned in two setups with all the alignment risk that carries, or they go out to a shop that has the bed length. The MC designation layers the C-axis and live milling on top, so a shaft with a keyway and a bolt pattern comes off the machine complete - and on parts this heavy, every extra time the part has to be moved is another chance to scrap it.
