2019 Haas DS-30Y CNC Dual-Spindle Turn-Mill Center

The Haas DS-30Y is a dual-spindle Y-axis turning center built for done-in-one work: turn, mill off-center, drill and tap in a single cycle, then pass the part to the second spindle for the back end without an operator touching it. This 2019 machine runs a 30 HP main spindle to 4,500 RPM with 275 ft-lb of torque at 600 RPM through a 3.5 inch bore and A2-6 nose on a 10 inch hydraulic chuck, opposed by a 20 HP secondary spindle reaching 4,800 RPM with 110 ft-lb at 700 RPM, a 2 inch bore and A2-5 nose on an 8.3 inch chuck. Bar capacity is 3 inches through the main spindle and 2 inches through the sub. Capacity runs to 18 inch maximum cutting diameter and 23 inch cutting length, with 31.8 inches of swing over the front apron and 20.8 over the cross slide. Travels are 12.5 inches in X and 23 inches in Z, with rapids of 472 IPM in X and Y and 945 IPM in Z. A 24-station BMT65 turret drives live tools to 6,000 RPM at a 1:1 ratio alongside a synchronized C axis rated 5 HP. The build includes 1,000 PSI high-pressure coolant, a 55 gallon tank with automatic refill and auxiliary filtration, chuck air blast, belt-type chip conveyor, parts catcher, automatic tool presetter, and Haas wireless probing.

Against the standard DS-30 it is built on, the Y axis is the whole argument. A DS-30 with live tooling can drill and mill on center and index with the C axis, but anything off center - a flat, a keyway, a bolt pattern that does not fall on a radius, a pocket that needs a flat bottom - either goes to a mill for a second operation or does not get made. The DS-30Y adds that motion directly, which is what turns a two-machine part into a one-machine part. This particular unit then goes past the base configuration in the two places that matter most for cycle time: the turret is a 24-station BMT65 rather than the 12 stations Haas ships as standard, so a long tool list fits without a mid-job tool change, and the live tooling carries the 6,000 RPM speed upgrade over the standard 4,000, which is the difference between running a small carbide endmill at proper surface speed and babying it. Add 1,000 PSI coolant and the dual-spindle pass-off, and the result is a lathe that finishes families of parts complete rather than roughing them for something else to finish.

About This Machine

Load a bar, walk away, come back to finished parts - the DS-30Y turns, mills off-center with a true Y axis, hands the work to a 4,800 RPM sub-spindle for the back end, and drops it in the parts catcher. A 30 HP 4,500 RPM main spindle, a 24-station BMT65 turret spinning live tools to 6,000 RPM, and 1,000 PSI high-pressure coolant mean complex parts come off complete, in one cycle, on one machine.
