The Haas ST-45L is a big-bore, long-bed CNC turning center with a reputation for straightforward serviceability that has made the ST platform a staple in oilfield, energy, and heavy job-shop environments. This 2020 unit runs an A2-11 spindle nose with a 7" through-bore and 6.5" bar capacity, turning up to 25.5" in diameter and 80" in length inside a 34.5" maximum part swing, with 17" of X-axis travel and 80" of Z-axis travel. Power comes from the Extra-Performance spindle package: a 55 HP two-speed geared head rated to 1,400 RPM and 2,100 ft-lbf of torque, built for large-diameter roughing in steel. Workholding centers on an 18" 3-jaw hydraulic chuck with hydraulic actuator, and a manual steady rest covering 1" to 16" supports long, slender shaft work. The 12-station hybrid BOT/VDI turret carries live milling to 6,000 RPM with a programmable C-axis for drilling, tapping, and milling in a single setup. Set against the Haas ST-40L, the ST-45L is the meaningful step up within the same long-bed platform. The ST-40L runs an A2-8 spindle with a 4.62" through-bore, 4.00" bar capacity, and a 15" chuck; the ST-45L opens the spindle to a 7" bore on an A2-11 nose with 6.5" bar capacity and an 18" chuck, putting oilfield tubulars, large flanges, and heavy shaft work inside the working range. Both cover 80" of cutting length, but the ST-45L carries it on a heavier casting with a larger spindle assembly, and the 55 HP two-speed Extra-Performance gearbox holds torque a smaller headstock cannot. It is also a full generation ahead of the Haas SL-40L it descends from: the ST series was redesigned from the ground up for rigidity and thermal stability, the 12-station bolt-on turret accepts hybrid BOT and VDI tooling, and the Haas NextGen control replaces the older Haas control with a faster processor, a modern touch interface, expanded program memory, Ethernet and USB transfer, Visual Part Programming, and support for live tooling with a programmable C-axis. Stepping into this machine is not a model-year change - it is more bore, more torque, and single-setup milling on the same footprint.
