1997 Okuma Crown 762S-BB CNC Turning Center

The Okuma Crown-762S-BB is a big-bore, 2-axis slant-bed CNC turning center from the generation of Okuma lathes that shops still keep running because the castings are heavy and the controls are serviceable. This 1997 machine takes bar stock up to 3" through the spindle and turns up to 10.63" in diameter and 19.7" in length, giving it the chucking capacity of a mid-size lathe with the bar-feed reach of a production machine. The 22 HP spindle runs 65 to 3,500 RPM through an A2-8 nose and carries a 10" 4-jaw chuck, so oversized, off-center, and irregular workpieces clamp up as easily as round bar. A 12-station automatic turret keeps a full job of tooling in the cut, and the machine is controlled by the Okuma OSP-U10L, the conversational OSP generation known for IGF programming and for staying diagnosable decades after installation. It comes with a chip conveyor, coolant tank, and toolholders.

Against the Okuma LB series lathes that preceded the Crown line, the 762S-BB is the machine that made big-bore work practical on a standard-footprint turning center. The LB generation ran the earlier OSP5000-series controls, where programming meant working around limited memory and a far less forgiving operator interface; the Crown answers with the OSP-U10L, bringing conversational IGF programming, larger program storage, and the graphical verification that turns a one-off setup from an afternoon into a coffee break. The big-bore spindle is the other half of the story - a 3" through-capacity lets a shop run heavier bar and grip deeper on chucked parts instead of stepping up to a larger, thirstier machine for the same job. Add the 12-station turret and the A2-8 nose, and the result is a lathe that covers a genuinely wide part envelope for its size, which is exactly why Crown-series machines are still working shifts in job shops thirty years on.

About This Machine

That 3" bar capacity is the difference between quoting the heavy chucking and bar work and watching it walk to another shop - this Crown-762S-BB turns 10.63" in diameter over a 22 HP A2-8 spindle and indexes 12 tools without complaint. Okuma built the Crown line to be rigid, simple, and serviceable, and with the OSP-U10L control, a 10" 4-jaw chuck, and a chip conveyor already on it, this one drops in as a dependable second-op and short-run workhorse.
