The DN Solutions Puma SMX-2600ST is a nine-axis multitasking mill-turn center built on the orthogonal SMX platform, a design with a reputation for holding position under heavy cuts that has made the SMX line a staple in job shops and contract manufacturing cells running done-in-one work. This 2022 machine turns up to 26 in (660 mm) in diameter and 60.6 in (1,540 mm) in length over a 10 in chuck, with a 3.2 in (82 mm) through hole in both spindles. The left and right turning spindles are each rated 4,000 RPM and 35 HP, producing 516 ft-lbs and 458 ft-lbs of torque, so heavy roughing on the main spindle hands off to a sub-spindle with nearly the same muscle for back-end work. Milling runs through a 12,000 RPM, 35 HP B-axis spindle rated 91 ft-lbs, swinging 240 deg (+/-120 deg) and fed from an 80-station tool magazine with 1.8 second tool changes, 3.5 in max tool diameter and 17.7 in max tool length. A 12-station lower turret adds live tooling at 5,000 RPM and 9.4 HP with 1.5 in boring bar capacity, letting the milling spindle and the turret cut at the same time. The SMX generation that followed the Doosan Puma MX2600ST carries a larger chuck size than the MX machines it replaced while delivering the same performance and flexibility, which is what puts a 10 in chuck and a 26 in turning diameter on a machine this compact. It also separates itself clearly from its own siblings: the base SMX2600 runs a single 4,000 RPM spindle with no sub-spindle and no lower turret, and the SMX2600S adds the right spindle but still leaves the turret off, which is why those configurations weigh 15,800 kg and 16,200 kg against the 18,000 kg (39,680 lb) of this ST. That extra mass is the 12-station live lower turret and the full second-spindle drive train, and it is what turns a mill-turn lathe into a machine that cuts on two tools at once and sends a finished part off the sub-spindle. For a shop quoting complex turned-and-milled work, that is the difference between booking a second operation on a VMC and closing the job in one cycle.
