2011 DMG Gildemeister Sprint-20/8 Linear 8-Axis CNC Swiss Lathe

The DMG Gildemeister Sprint 20/8 Linear is a sliding-headstock Swiss-type CNC lathe with a reputation for holding tolerance shift after shift, which has made the Sprint series a staple in medical, aerospace, connector, and precision bar-turning shops. This 2011 machine runs 20mm (0.787 inch) bar capacity across eight CNC axes, with linear motor drives on the primary slides delivering rapid traverse and acceleration that ball-screw Swiss machines cannot match, and it can be operated with or without the guide bushing for short-part flexibility. A 10,000 RPM main spindle with full C-axis works against a synchronized 10,000 RPM counter spindle, so parts transfer on the fly and finish complete off the back with no second operation. Multiple tool carriers put driven tools, cross-working, and back-working stations in cut simultaneously, and the Siemens 840D control coordinates the channels for true overlapped machining rather than sequential toolpaths. It is a production-focused, field-proven configuration for small-diameter turned and milled components in stainless, titanium, brass, and engineered plastics.

Compared with the earlier Gildemeister Sprint 20/5 Linear, this 20/8 configuration adds three additional CNC axes, and those axes are the difference between a capable Swiss lathe and a true multi-channel production cell. Where the 20/5 sequences much of its back-working and limits how many tools can engage at once, the 20/8 supports simultaneous cutting across main and counter spindle work, which collapses cycle time on multi-feature parts instead of just repositioning faster. It also expands driven-tool and back-working station count over the 20/5 layout, so complex parts fit in one setup rather than spilling into a secondary operation. Against ball-screw-driven Swiss automatics of the prior generation, the linear-drive slides on this machine eliminate backlash and screw wear as a long-run accuracy variable, and the Siemens 840D control brings far stronger multi-channel programming, tool management, and simulation than the earlier Siemens 810D-era controls found on older Gildemeister sliding-headstock machines. The result is a meaningfully better machine, not simply a newer one, with real gains in parts per shift and in the complexity of work a shop can quote with confidence.

About This Machine

Every small-diameter, high-tolerance job you have turned away because the part needed live milling, cross-drilling, and a finished back end in one chucking is a job this DMG Gildemeister Sprint 20/8 Linear takes lights-out at 20mm bar. Eight linear-driven axes, twin 10,000 RPM spindles, and a Siemens 840D control in a well kept package give you the kind of unattended, repeatable throughput that turns medical, aerospace, and fluid-power bar work into steady margin.
