The Tsugami SS327-III-5AX is a 32 mm sliding headstock CNC Swiss-type lathe with a reputation for rigidity and repeatability that has made the Tsugami name a staple in medical, aerospace, and precision-component shops. This 2022 machine is built on 7-axis architecture with simultaneous 4- and 5-axis machining, a 1.26 inch (32 mm) bar capacity, and a 12.99 inch maximum machining length with the guide bushing, and it is convertible to chucker mode with the optional chucker kit. The main and back spindles are each rated at 8,000 RPM with 5/7.5 HP motors and full C-axis indexing, and the X1, Y1, Z1, X2, Y2, Z2, C1, and C2 axes run under a Fanuc 31i-B5 CNC control with simultaneous all-axes control and rapid traverse up to 1,378 ipm. The modular servo-driven B-axis tool spindle turns to 7,000 RPM with live positions front and rear for angled drilling and milling, while the front cross and back live tools are rated to 6,000 RPM across 36 tool positions, including a back cross tool spindle and deep hole drill holders beside the back spindle. This unit is equipped with an Edge Patriot 338 magazine bar feeder, an MP Systems 2,000 PSI 8-port high-pressure coolant system, an LNS chip conveyor, a Tri-Mist 850 G2 mist collector, a FireTrace system, a parts catcher, a long parts ejector, and a transformer.
Compared with the earlier Tsugami SS327-5AX, the III-generation SS327-III-5AX was re-engineered for stiffness and stability: Tsugami fitted larger linear guides, added ribbing to the already solid cast base, placed thermal displacement compensation sensors throughout the machine, and made a 3-toggle clamping system and a 4 GB data server standard. Its enhanced servo-driven B-axis carries live tools on both the front and rear faces, so a single setup can handle angled features on both the main side and the back side and cut down on secondary operations. Chucker-convertible design adds another layer, letting the same platform run long slender bar work through the guide bushing or, with the chucker kit, short parts without it. For a shop running complex, multi-feature Swiss work, the SS327-III-5AX is a meaningfully more capable platform than its predecessor, with better rigidity, thermal control, and B-axis reach.
