The Haas ST-20 is a CNC lathe with a reputation for dependable, easy-to-run turning that has made it a staple in job shops and production cells across North America. This 2019 Haas ST-20 CNC lathe with live tooling is built on the redesigned ST-20 platform, with an A2-6 spindle nose rated at 20 HP and 4,000 RPM, an 8.3" 3-jaw hydraulic chuck, a 3.5" spindle bore, and 2.5" bar capacity. A 12-station BMT65 live tooling turret with 6,000 RPM live tools handles drilling, tapping, and milling features in the same setup, and a programmable tailstock supports long shafts. Haas rates the ST-20 for a 21" max part swing, 11.75" max cutting diameter with the BMT65 turret, 22.5" max cutting length, and X/Z travels of 8.4 x 22.5 inches with 945 IPM rapids on both axes. The Haas control is equipped with rigid tapping, user-definable macros, spindle orientation, early power failure detection, Ethernet, WiFi, Haas Connect remote monitoring, the Visual Programming System, media display M-code, and 1GB of program memory. Supporting equipment includes a Haas bar feeder, 300 PSI high-pressure coolant with a 55-gallon tank and tray filter kit, chip conveyor, parts catcher, and auto door.
Compared with the pre-2019 Haas ST-20, the redesigned ST-20 is a meaningful step forward. Haas enlarged the drawtube bore to 2.5 inches, about 25 percent more bar capacity than the earlier model's 2.0 inches, and paired it with a chuck that has a larger throat for bigger parts. Z-axis travel grew from 21.0 to 22.5 inches, raising maximum cutting length from 21 to 22.5 inches, while machine depth dropped from 78 to 64 inches to save floor space. The redesigned tailstock allows hydraulic holding pressure as low as 60 PSI to limit distortion on thin-wall parts, and its Acme screw drive gives firmer support during heavy roughing. An available auto door and standard WiFi round out a platform designed for higher-volume work. For buyers, that means larger bar work, longer parts in a single chucking, and a smaller machine on the floor - a better machine, not just a newer one.
