2022 Mazak VC-500A/5X AM HWD 5-Axis CNC Vertical Machining Center

The 2022 Mazak VC-500A/5X AM HWD is a one-of-a-kind hybrid machining center that combines full simultaneous 5-axis CNC milling with integrated Hot Wire Deposition (HWD) additive manufacturing — a technology developed by Mazak in collaboration with Lincoln Electric. The machine runs on a CAT40 spindle capable of 12,000 RPM, is equipped with a 30-tool arm-style ATC, and runs on Mazatrol SmoothX control, giving operators a single programming environment for both deposition and cutting operations. With X/Y/Z travels of 19.88" x 19.88" x 20.07", a continuous 5th-axis trunnion table, this unit delivers serious hybrid manufacturing capability in a compact 5-axis envelope. This specific machine came out of a single prototype/R&D facility and has seen extremely limited real-world use.

Compared to the standard Mazak VC-500A/5X — a well-proven 5-axis vertical machining center without additive capability — the AM HWD variant adds a fully integrated wire-based deposition module that can build up material directly on a workpiece for near-net-shape construction, repair applications, and multi-material parts. The standard VC-500A/5X is strictly a subtractive machine; the AM HWD closes the loop by enabling both material buildup and precision machining in a single setup, eliminating the need for a separate additive system and reducing part handling between processes. For shops doing repair, aerospace near-net-shape work, or advanced prototype manufacturing, this is the capability the standard VC-500A/5X simply cannot deliver.
