2006 Mikron UCP 600 Vario CNC 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center

The Mikron UCP 600 Vario is a Swiss-built 5-axis vertical machining center with a reputation for rigidity and accuracy that made it a mainstay in aerospace, medical, and precision mold shops. This 2006 example combines travels of 23.6 x 17.7 x 17.7 inch (X/Y/Z) with an integrated 5-axis rotary tilting table - a 17.7 inch diameter platter offering B-axis tilt from -115 to +30 degrees and continuous 360-degree C-axis rotation - so complex, multi-sided parts are finished complete in one setup. Power comes from a vector-controlled Step-Tec motorized spindle turning to 20,000 RPM through an HSK-A63 interface, rated 40 HP (30 kW) on a ceramic hybrid bearing set for thermal stability across long cycles. The machine runs the proven Heidenhain iTNC 530 control with conversational programming, Ethernet data transfer, and a manual pulse handwheel, feeds a 30-tool HSK-A63 magazine, and rapids at 866 IPM (22 m/min). Direct-measured B and C axes, a BLUM laser tool measuring system, mist collector, coolant filtration, a System 3R pallet interface, and smart machine thermal control round out a production-ready 5-axis cell.

Compared with the original Mikron UCP 600 that preceded it, the UCP 600 Vario is a meaningfully more capable machine, not just a newer one. The Vario system swapped the earlier model's fixed layout for a modular architecture - interchangeable rotary tilting tables (standard and torque-motor RTT), a scalable tool magazine expandable to 220 pockets, and vector-controlled Step-Tec spindle options reaching 42,000 RPM - so a single platform can be tailored from positional 5-sided work to full simultaneous 5-axis machining. It also advanced from the previous generation's older Heidenhain TNC control to the faster iTNC 530, adding Ethernet CAM data flow, smoother look-ahead for high-speed contouring, and smart machine thermal-control modules that hold tighter accuracy through long 5-axis cuts. For a shop stepping up from a 3-axis VMC or an earlier UCP, that means complete-in-one-setup capability, superior surface finish, and Swiss 5-axis precision brought in-house on a field-proven platform.
