The Haas VF-2SSYT is a 40-taper vertical machining center built for shops that live on cycle time. This 2023 machine runs a 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive spindle rated 30 HP with 90 ft-lb of torque at 2,000 RPM, liquid cooled and air/oil lubricated, over travels of 30 inches in X, 20 in Y, and 20 in Z. The YT designation is the extended-Y version of the VF-2SS, carrying 20 inches of Y travel instead of the 16 inches the standard machine gets - four extra inches that decide whether a fixture plate fits. The 36 x 18 inch table takes 1,500 lb across three T-slots on 4.92 inch centers, with 4 to 24 inches of spindle-nose-to-table clearance. Rapids run 1,400 IPM on all three axes with 833 IPM maximum cutting feed, driven by 1,995 lbf of thrust in X and Y and 3,085 lbf in Z. A 30+1 side-mount tool changer handles tools to 2.5 inches in diameter, 5.4 inches with adjacent pockets empty, up to 11 inches long and 12 lb, swapping tool-to-tool in 1.8 seconds and chip-to-chip in 2.4. Rigid Tapping, High Speed Machining, expanded 1 GB program memory, and wireless networking are installed, along with a chip auger and a Swarf Unlimited chip tray.
Against the standard VF-2 it is built on, the VF-2SSYT is a different class of machine in the two places that matter most. The Super Speed package replaces the base machine's belt-driven spindle with an inline direct-drive head turning to 12,000 RPM, which removes belt losses and the vibration that comes with them, and it raises rapid traverse to 1,400 IPM on every axis - so the machine spends less of each cycle moving and more of it cutting. A side-mount tool changer swapping tool-to-tool in 1.8 seconds compounds that on any part with a long tool list. The YT extension then adds four inches of Y travel over both the VF-2 and the VF-2SS, taking the working envelope from 30 x 16 x 20 to 30 x 20 x 20 inches. For a shop stepping up from an older VF-2, the practical result is shorter cycles on programs it already runs, the spindle speed to make high-speed toolpaths worth programming, and enough Y that fixtures stop being designed around the machine.
