2004 Haas VF-5/50 CNC Vertical Machining Center

The Haas VF-5/50 is a 50-taper CNC vertical machining center built for heavy cutting, and its combination of reach and torque has made it a workhorse in job shops running large steel and cast iron. This 2004 example offers travels of 50 x 26 x 25 inches over a 52 x 23 inch table with seven 5/8 inch T-slots on 3.15 inch centers and a 4,000 lb maximum table load, with 7 to 32 inches of spindle nose to table clearance. The 2-speed geared-head spindle runs a CT50 taper, turns to 7,500 RPM, and delivers 30 HP with 340 ft-lb of torque at 700 RPM. Rapids move 710 IPM on X, Y and Z with a 500 IPM maximum cutting feed, and the 30+1 side-mount tool changer takes tools to 4 inches in diameter, 16 inches long and 30 lb, swapping tool to tool in 4.2 seconds. The machine is equipped with through-spindle coolant, a programmable coolant nozzle, a 95-gallon coolant tank, a chip auger, rigid tapping, 4th-axis drive and wiring, and a Renishaw probe.

Against the 40-taper Haas VF-5, this is a fundamentally heavier machine rather than a trim-level change. The 40-taper VF-5 uses an inline belt-driven spindle whose torque falls away in the low RPM band exactly where roughing happens; the VF-5/50 puts a 2-speed geared head behind a CT50 taper and holds 340 ft-lb at 700 RPM, better than double what the 40-taper delivers, so depth of cut is limited by fixturing rather than by the spindle. The bigger taper also carries a far stiffer toolholder interface, which shows up as less chatter on long reaches and better tool life in interrupted cuts, and the tool changer follows suit with 30+1 pockets rated to 30 lb per tool instead of the lighter 40-taper carousel. Add the 4,000 lb table rating and 32 inches of nose-to-table clearance and the working envelope accepts fixtures and workpieces a 40-taper VF-5 simply cannot hold. For a shop that keeps quoting around its heaviest jobs, the 50-taper is the machine that stops the work from going out the door.

About This Machine

Fifty-taper muscle changes what you can quote - 340 ft-lb at the spindle means this VF-5/50 hogs through hardened steel and big cast iron that a 40-taper machine can only nibble at. With 50 x 26 x 25 inch travels, a 30+1 side-mount changer, and through-spindle coolant already on it, it lands on your floor ready to take the heavy work you have been sending out.
