The Haas UMC-500SS is a compact 5-axis universal machining center whose simple, dependable Haas platform has made it a trusted choice for job shops, mold makers, and aerospace and medical part producers stepping into multi-axis work. This 2022 unit offers X 24 / Y 16 / Z 16 inch travels and an integrated dual-axis trunnion with B-axis tilt of +120 / -35 degrees and 360 degree C-axis rotation, carrying a 15.7 inch diameter platter rated for 500 lbs. Its inline direct-drive CAT 40 spindle is rated at 12,000 RPM and 30 HP, with spindle nose to platter distance of 4 to 20 inches. X, Y and Z rapids are rated at 1,200 ipm, and a high-speed 30+1 side-mount tool changer keeps tool changes quick. The Haas control is equipped with a touchscreen, remote jog handle, 1 GB of program memory, Dynamic Work Offsets and Tool Center Point Control for simultaneous 5-axis programming, High-Speed Machining, rigid tapping, Safe Run, Second Home Position, Media Display M-code, Ethernet and WiFi connectivity, HaasConnect remote monitoring and HaasDrop file transfer. Rotary scales on the trunnion axes, an early power-failure detection module and a control cabinet cooler round out the package. Chip and coolant management includes a belt-type chip conveyor, chip tray filter kit, 55-gallon coolant tank and through-spindle coolant readiness, plus a top cover for the UMC enclosure.
Compared with the standard Haas UMC-500, which shares the same 24 x 16 x 16 inch work envelope, the UMC-500SS is the Super-Speed version built for faster cycle times. It raises rapids from 900 ipm to 1,200 ipm on all three linear axes, steps up spindle speed with its 12,000 RPM inline direct-drive design, and swaps in the high-speed side-mount tool changer for shorter tool-to-tool and chip-to-chip times. It also improves on the older approach of bolting a rotary trunnion onto a standard VF-series vertical mill, because the UMC-500SS integrates the trunnion into the machine design for better part clearance, a dedicated 5-axis work zone and native Tool Center Point Control. For a buyer, that means a meaningfully faster and more capable 5-axis platform than the base UMC-500 or a retrofitted VF-series setup, with shorter cycles and fewer setups on complex parts.
