The Toyoda/WELE SB316Z is a CNC double-column (bridge-type) vertical machining center with a reputation for rigidity and long-term accuracy that has made the SB series a staple in aerospace, energy, and mold and die shops. This unit is configured with X/Y/Z travels of 120.5 x 63 x 39.4 inches over a 118 x 59 inch table rated for 22,000 lbs, with 66.9 inches between columns for wide workpieces. The extended 39.4 inch Z-axis ram carries a built-in integral-motor spindle rated to 12,000 RPM with Big Plus (BCV50) dual-contact tooling. A 120-tool chain-type magazine handles tools up to 44.1 lbs. The machine is controlled by a Fanuc 31i-MB Plus CNC with a 15 inch color touchscreen, bell-shaped acceleration and deceleration control, a machining condition selecting function, and an expanded work coordinate system. Fagor linear scales on the X, Y, and Z axes provide closed-loop positioning feedback. Supporting equipment includes 1,015 PSI (70 bar) thru-spindle coolant with a high-capacity tank, a caterpillar-type chip conveyor with a 47.2 inch discharge height, an oil skimmer, a roof enclosure with splash guards, air purge, and 4th-axis wiring and piping with an ATS-capable rotary joint. It runs on 220V 3-phase power and is built with CE-version components and UL wiring.
Compared with the standard-configuration Toyoda SB316 and the smaller SB216, the SB316Z specification is a clear step up for high-speed and high-volume work. The standard SB316 ships with a two-speed geared spindle limited to 6,000 RPM, a 31.5 inch Z-axis, and a 32-tool magazine. This SB316Z doubles the spindle speed to 12,000 RPM with a built-in direct-drive design suited to aluminum and light alloys, adds roughly 8 inches of Z travel for taller parts and longer tooling, and nearly quadruples tool capacity to 120 pockets for fewer manual tool swaps on complex jobs. Linear scales on all three axes, high-pressure thru-spindle coolant, and the current-generation Fanuc 31i-MB Plus control round out a package designed for accurate, efficient machining of large components, giving buyers a meaningfully more capable bridge mill rather than just a larger one.
