The Haas VF-9/50 is a large-frame CNC vertical machining center with a reputation for straightforward, dependable operation that has made it a staple in job shops, fabrication shops and heavy-part production environments. This 2017 VF-9/50 is a 3-axis, 50-taper vertical mill with X 84 / Y 40 / Z 30 inch travels and an 84 x 36 inch T-slot table rated for 4,000 lb, with a spindle nose to table range of 5 to 35 inches. The CAT 50 spindle is rated at 7,500 RPM and 30 HP through a vector drive and 2-speed gearbox, producing 340 ft-lbf of torque at 700 RPM, a combination designed for heavy roughing and large-diameter tooling. A 30+1 side-mount tool changer handles 50-taper tooling, and the model is rated for 600 ipm rapids on X, Y and Z with a 500 ipm maximum cutting feed. Control is the Haas Next Generation Control (NGC) equipped with macros, coordinate rotation and scaling, rigid tapping, M19 spindle orientation, high speed machining, VPS editing, media display, compensation tables, 1GB program memory and a remote jog handle. Coolant includes through-spindle coolant at 300 PSI, a programmable coolant nozzle and a 95-gallon coolant tank, and the machine carries the 4th-axis drive and wiring needed to add a Haas rotary table.
Compared with earlier VF-9/50 builds running the Classic Haas Control, this NGC-equipped VF-9/50 pairs the same long-travel, 50-taper geared-head frame with Haas's current control platform. The Next Generation Control replaced the Classic Haas Control with a streamlined, tab-based interface, Visual Programming System (VPS) templates for building programs at the machine, media display for showing setup images and instructions directly on the control, and modern tool and file management. For shops running older Classic-control VF-9/50 or VF-series machines, that means faster setups, easier operator training and a control that matches the rest of a modern Haas floor. The result is a meaningfully better VF-9/50, not just a newer one: the same heavy-cutting envelope with a control built for today's programming and production workflows.
