The Haas VF-2SS is the super-speed version of Haas's VF-2 vertical machining center, a simple, well-supported 40-taper platform found in job shops, production cells and training rooms across the country. This 2023 VF-2SS offers X/Y/Z travels of 30 x 16 x 20 inches, a 36 x 14 inch table with three 5/8 inch T-slots, and 4 to 24 inches from spindle nose to table, an envelope sized for aerospace, medical, automotive, electronics and general job-shop parts such as brackets, housings, manifolds and fixtures. Haas rates its inline direct-drive CAT 40 spindle at 12,000 RPM and 30 HP with 90 ft-lb of torque, and the machine is designed for 1,400 ipm rapids on all three axes and cutting feeds up to 833 ipm. A 30+1 side-mount tool changer is rated at 1.6 seconds tool-to-tool and 2.2 seconds chip-to-chip on average, and accepts tools up to 5 inches in diameter with adjacent pockets empty, 11 inches long and 12 lb. The unit runs the Haas Next Generation Control with the Haas touch-screen option, 1 GB program memory, Ethernet and Wi-Fi with Haas wireless file transfer, high-speed machining, rigid tapping, Media Display M-code, Safe Run mode, surge protection and early power-failure detection. It is also equipped with flood coolant from a 55-gallon tank, 300 psi through-spindle coolant, Haas window blast, a chip auger, a 4th-axis drive ready for a rotary table and a low-voltage transformer.
Compared with the standard Haas VF-2, which runs an 8,100 RPM spindle and a 20+1 carousel tool changer, the VF-2SS adds a 12,000 RPM spindle, faster rapids and a quicker side-mount changer. It also improves on earlier VF-2SS builds that carried a 24+1 tool changer and the Classic Haas Control: this generation holds 30 tools plus one in the spindle and moves to the Next Generation Control with 1 GB of memory, a 15-inch display and network file transfer. For a buyer, that means more tools on hand, faster cycle times and a modern control on the same compact VF-2 footprint.
