The Doosan SMX Family, Decoded: Every Size and Suffix Explained

What is the Doosan SMX series?

The Doosan SMX series, now sold under the DN Solutions and Puma names, is a family of super multi-tasking turning centers, mill-turn machines that combine turning, milling, drilling, and tapping in one setup with as many as nine axes. The lineup runs from the compact SMX 2100 up through the 2600, 3100, and the large 5100, which set the size and power. A string of letters after the number, S, T, B, L, and XL, tells you the configuration: whether the machine has a second spindle, a lower turret, a B-axis milling head, or a long bed. Learn the two-part naming and you can read any SMX model at a glance.

Shop for a used Doosan mill-turn and you run into a wall of names that read like license plates. SMX 2600S. SMX 3100LS. SMX 2100ST. SMX 5100LSB. They look almost the same, they are priced very differently, and nothing on the tag tells a buyer in plain English what actually separates one from the next. It is easy to overpay for capability you will not use, or worse, to buy a machine that cannot do the job because it was missing one letter.

The good news is that the SMX naming is not random. It is a simple two-part code: a number that sets the size and power, and a set of letters that set the configuration. Once you can read both halves, the whole family lines up in order and the price differences start to make sense. This is the first in our CNC Family Breakdown series, and we are starting with the SMX because it is one of the most useful families to understand and one of the easiest to get wrong.

What the SMX Series Actually Is

Before the model names, understand the machine. An SMX is a super multi-tasking turning center. At its core it is a lathe: a main spindle turns the part against tools. But it adds a milling head that can tilt and rotate, plus a Y axis and a C axis, so it can also mill, drill, tap, and cut off-center features on the same part without moving it to another machine. Fully configured, an SMX can carry as many as nine axes of motion and up to 120 tools, and it runs a Fanuc or Siemens control.

The point of a machine like this is done-in-one. A complex part that would otherwise pass through a lathe, then a mill, then back again, comes off an SMX finished in a single setup. Fewer setups means fewer chances to lose accuracy and fewer handoffs waiting in a queue. That is the whole reason a shop pays for multi-tasking, and it is why the configuration, the letters after the number, matters so much: those letters decide how much of that done-in-one work the machine can actually do.

Where the SMX Sits in the Doosan Lineup

Doosan, now DN Solutions, builds several turning families, and knowing where the SMX sits keeps you from overbuying. The Lynx and Puma turning centers are lathes first. Many of them offer live tooling and even a Y axis, so they can do light milling and off-center features, but they do not carry the SMX's tilting B-axis milling head. That B-axis head, along with the option of a second spindle and a lower turret, is what moves a machine from a lathe that can mill a little to a true super multi-tasking center. Doosan also builds the newer DNX multi-tasking line aimed at similar done-in-one work.

The practical takeaway for a buyer is simple. If your parts are mostly turning with some cross-drilling and light milling, a Puma with live tooling and a Y axis may be all you need, and it will cost less to buy and run. Step up to the SMX when the parts genuinely need angled 5-axis milling, full back-side work, or both, the jobs that actually use the B-axis head and the second spindle. Buying an SMX for simple turning is paying for a milling head you will park.

Part One: The Number Sets the Size

The four-digit number is the size and power class. Bigger number, bigger machine, more chuck, more bar capacity, more spindle power. Here is how the main classes line up. Treat the figures as representative, because exact numbers shift with the specific model, options, and year, so always confirm against the spec sheet for the actual machine.

Class Chuck Bar capacity Max turning dia. Main spindle Best for
SMX 2100 8 in ~65 mm ~20 in (510 mm) ~22 HP Small, complex precision parts
SMX 2600 10 in 81 mm (3.2 in) 26 in (660 mm) ~35 HP, 4,000 rpm General mill-turn work
SMX 3100 12 in 102 mm (4 in) 26 in (660 mm) ~40 HP, 3,000 rpm Larger, heavier, higher-torque parts
SMX 5100 15 to 21 in 102 to 165 mm 33 in (830 mm) ~50 HP Big, long, heavy work, up to 160 in long

Read down that table and the family is a ladder. The 2100 is the compact machine for small, intricate parts, the kind of work a medical or aerospace shop runs. The 2600 and 3100 are the heart of the line, mid-size machines where the 3100 mostly buys you a larger chuck, more bar capacity, and more torque than the 2600. The 5100 is the heavy end, built for large-diameter and long parts like shafts and energy components, with the power and rigidity to match. Pick the number by the biggest and heaviest part you need to run, then move to the letters.

Part Two: The Letters Set the Configuration

This is the half that trips buyers up, and it is where the real money and capability live. The letters after the number are a configuration code, and they stack. Here is what each one means.

S, second spindle. An S model adds a second, opposing spindle on the right. The main spindle turns the front of the part, then hands it off to the sub spindle so the back side can be finished in the same cycle. Without an S, you finish the back of the part in a separate operation. The second spindle is what makes true done-in-one turning possible.

T, lower turret. A T model adds a lower turret, typically a 12-station tool holder below the main work area. It gives the machine a second cutting path, so the upper milling head and the lower turret can both cut at once, for example roughing with one while the other finishes. It is about throughput: two tools in the cut instead of one.

B, B-axis milling head. A B-axis is a tilting milling head that swivels through a wide arc, so the machine can approach the part from almost any angle and do true 5-axis milling, not just cross-drilling. On the core mill-turn models the B-axis head is the defining feature, and on the large 5100 turning centers the B appears as a named option that adds the full milling head.

L, long bed. An L model extends the maximum turning length, roughly a meter of extra capacity on some classes, for long shafts and parts that will not fit the standard bed. On the 5100 you also see XL, an extra-long bed that pushes turning length out toward 160 inches.

Because the letters stack, they describe the machine in combination. The exact base equipment can vary by size class and year, so the safe habit is to decode the letters, then confirm the specifics against the machine's spec sheet before you buy.

The number tells you how big a part it can hold. The letters tell you how much of the job it can finish without a second machine. Miss one letter and you can buy the wrong machine at the right price.

How to Read Any SMX Model Name

Put the two halves together and any SMX name decodes in seconds. Work the number first, then the letters left to right.

SMX 2600ST: a 10-inch-chuck mid-size machine, with a second spindle and a lower turret. A strong done-in-one machine for complete mid-size parts with high throughput.

SMX 3100LS: a 12-inch-chuck machine, long bed, with a second spindle. Built for longer parts that still need back-side work finished in one setup.

SMX 5100LSB: the big 21-inch-class machine, long bed, second spindle, and a B-axis milling head. Heavy, long, and fully multi-tasking, the top of the family.

Which SMX Fits Which Work

Match the machine to the part, not to the longest name you can afford. If you run small, intricate parts in medical or aerospace, a 2100 with a sub spindle and B-axis covers a lot of ground in a small footprint. If you run a mix of mid-size parts and want to finish them complete, a 2600 or 3100 with an S, and a T if throughput matters, is the sweet spot of the line. If your work is large-diameter or long, shafts, couplings, energy and oil-country parts, the 5100 in the length and configuration your parts demand is the machine, and the L or XL bed is the deciding spec.

The mistake to avoid is buying capability you will not use. A lower turret and a second spindle are worth real money, and they are worth it only if your parts use them. A shop running simple mid-size parts does not need a 3100STB. A shop trying to finish complex parts complete should not settle for a base machine with no sub spindle just to save on the sticker. The letters are the decision.

The Configurations You Will Actually See Used

A few SMX configurations turn up far more often than the rest on the used market, and knowing them helps you move fast when the right one appears. The 2600S and 3100S, mid-size machines with a sub spindle, are common because they hit the sweet spot of done-in-one turning for a broad range of parts. The 2600ST and 3100ST, which add the lower turret, show up where a shop needed throughput and bought the fuller machine. Long-bed 3100L and 3100LS examples appear when shafts and longer parts drove the purchase.

The big 5100, in its various L, S, and B combinations, is rarer, and tends to come out of shops doing heavy or oil-country work. When one of the common configurations comes up clean, with its tooling and a supported control, it tends to move quickly, because those are the versions most buyers are hunting for. The rarer the configuration, the more it pays to confirm it is exactly what your parts need before you commit, because you may wait a while for another one.

Buying a Used SMX: What to Check

A multi-tasking machine has more to inspect than a plain lathe, because there is simply more machine. Before you buy a used SMX, work through the configuration and the condition together:

Confirm the configuration matches the tag. Verify the machine actually has the sub spindle, turret, and B-axis the model name implies, and that all of them work. Machines get reconfigured, and options get listed loosely.

Main and sub spindle condition. Check both spindles for runout, bearing noise, and heat. On an S machine the sub spindle does real cutting, so it matters as much as the main.

B-axis milling head. Exercise the B-axis through its full travel and check the milling spindle for runout and noise. The tilting head is one of the most complex and costly parts of the machine to repair.

Turret and tooling. Index the lower turret if fitted, and confirm what live tooling, chucks, and holders come with the machine. Multi-tasking tooling packages are expensive.

Control and hours. Confirm the Fanuc or Siemens control generation and that it is still supported, and ask for spindle hours and maintenance history. A well-documented machine is worth paying for.

Resell CNC Take

The SMX line is one of the best values on the used market when you buy the right configuration, and one of the easiest to get wrong when you buy off the number alone. We see shops pay for a machine loaded with a turret and sub spindle they never use, and others buy a base machine and then need a second operation for every part. Bring us the parts you want to run and we will match you to the exact SMX size and letters that fit, then check that a used one is actually configured and maintained the way the tag claims. On multi-tasking machines, the spec sheet and the inspection matter more than anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SMX model naming mean?

An SMX name has two parts. The number, such as 2100, 2600, 3100, or 5100, sets the size and power class. The letters that follow set the configuration: S for a second spindle, T for a lower turret, B for a B-axis milling head, and L for a long bed, with XL for the extra-long 5100. The letters stack, so an SMX 2600ST has both a sub spindle and a lower turret.

What is the difference between the SMX 2600 and SMX 3100?

Both are mid-size mill-turn machines with the same roughly 26-inch maximum turning diameter, but the 3100 steps up to a 12-inch chuck, larger 102 mm bar capacity, and more spindle torque, around 40 HP versus about 35 HP on the 2600. Choose the 3100 for larger or heavier parts, the 2600 for lighter mid-size work.

What does ST mean on a Doosan SMX?

ST means the machine has both a second spindle and a lower turret. The S sub spindle lets it finish the back of a part in the same cycle, and the T lower turret adds a second cutting path so the upper milling head and the turret can cut at the same time. It is the high-throughput, done-in-one configuration.

How many axes does an SMX have?

A fully configured SMX carries as many as nine axes of motion, combining main and sub spindle rotation, X, Y, and Z travel, the C axis, the B-axis milling head, and a lower turret. Simpler configurations have fewer axes. The more letters in the model name, generally the more axes the machine has.

Is a used Doosan SMX worth buying?

It can be a strong value, because multi-tasking machines are expensive new and a well-kept used one can put done-in-one capability on the floor for far less. The key is matching the size and configuration to your parts and confirming, on inspection, that the sub spindle, turret, B-axis, and control are all present and working as the model name implies.

Are SMX and Puma SMX the same machine?

Yes. The series has been sold as the Doosan Puma SMX and, more recently, under the DN Solutions name after the company's rebrand. The SMX model numbers and suffix system are the same across those badges, which is why you will see the same machine listed under more than one brand name on the used market.
