The Mazak VARIAXIS i-Series, Decoded: Every Size and Suffix Explained

What is the Mazak VARIAXIS i-Series?

The Mazak VARIAXIS i-Series is a family of simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining centers built to finish complex parts on multiple faces in one setup, using a tilting, rotating table and a MAZATROL Smooth control. The model name is a code: the number, from the compact i-300 up to i-1050, sets the size class, and the letters and words after it set the configuration. A T means the machine can also turn, an AWC means it has Mazak's Auto Work Changer for unmanned pallet automation, and NEO marks the newer generation of the platform. Learn the two-part naming and you can read any VARIAXIS i model at a glance, which matters a lot when you are shopping a used one.

Shop for a used Mazak 5-axis and the names come at you like a license plate. VARIAXIS i-600. i-700T. i-800 AWC. i-600 NEO. They look almost the same, they are priced worlds apart, and nothing on the tag spells out in plain English what actually separates one from the next. It is easy to overpay for capability you will never use, or to buy a machine that cannot do the job because it was missing one letter.

The good news is that the VARIAXIS i naming is not random. It is a two-part code: a number that sets the size and a set of letters and words that set the configuration. Once you can read both halves, the whole family lines up in order and the price differences start to make sense. This is our CNC Family Breakdown on the VARIAXIS i-Series, one of the most capable and most misread 5-axis families on the used market.

What the VARIAXIS i-Series Actually Is

Before the model names, understand the machine. A VARIAXIS i is a simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining center. It has the usual three linear axes plus a table that both tilts and rotates, giving it the two extra axes. Because the table can present the part to the spindle at almost any angle, the machine reaches multiple faces of a complex part in a single setup, cutting the handling, refixturing, and stack-up error that eat a 3-axis shop alive. It runs a MAZATROL Smooth control, the SmoothX generation on the original i machines and SmoothAi on the newer NEO models.

The point of a machine like this is done-in-one. A part that would otherwise pass through several setups, or several machines, comes off a VARIAXIS finished. That is why the configuration matters so much: the letters after the number decide how much of that done-in-one work a given machine can actually do, from pure 5-axis milling all the way to unmanned mill-turn production.

Where the VARIAXIS i Sits in Mazak's 5-Axis Range

Mazak builds more than one 5-axis family, and knowing where the VARIAXIS i sits keeps you from buying the wrong tool. Below it are smaller, lighter machines like the compact VARIAXIS j and the entry-level CV5-500, aimed at smaller parts and shops taking their first step into simultaneous 5-axis. The VARIAXIS i is the heart of the milling-based 5-axis line: more machine, a wider size range, and the turning and automation options the smaller machines do not offer.

The important distinction is with the INTEGREX line, which buyers often lump in with VARIAXIS. INTEGREX is Mazak's turning-based multi-tasking family: it starts from a lathe and adds milling, built around a main and sub spindle for parts that are turning-dominant. VARIAXIS starts from a mill and adds a tilting rotary table, built around 5-axis milling, with turning available as the T option. The practical rule is simple. If your parts are milling-dominant complex shapes, VARIAXIS is the family. If they are turning-dominant with some milling, look at INTEGREX. Buy the family that matches how the part is mostly made.

Part One: The Number Sets the Size

The number is the size and capacity class. Bigger number, bigger table, larger and heavier workpiece. Treat the figures below as representative, because exact table sizes, travels, and weights shift with the specific model, generation, and options, so always confirm against the spec sheet for the actual machine.

Model Size class Turning (T) offered Best for
i-300 (AWC) Compact, smallest (small parts, roughly up to 350 mm) No Small automated parts; ships with the Auto Work Changer
i-500 Small No Small, complex 5-axis parts
i-600 Small-mid (600 x 500 mm table, approx. 700 x 450 mm part) No Mid-size complex parts
i-700 / i-700T Mid-large Yes (700T) Larger parts, mill-turn on the T
i-800 / i-800T Large Yes (800T) Large, heavy complex parts
i-1050 / i-1050T Largest Yes (1050T) Big, heavy workpieces

Read down the table and the family is a ladder. At the bottom sits the compact i-300, which ships with Mazak's Auto Work Changer for automated small-part production. The i-500 and i-600 are the small-to-mid machines for complex parts, the kind of tight-tolerance 5-axis work medical and aerospace shops run. The i-700 and i-800 step up in table size and part weight for larger, heavier components, and they are the sizes where the turning option starts to matter. The i-1050 is the big end, built for large workpieces. Pick the number by the biggest and heaviest part you need to swing on a tilting table, then move to the letters.

Part Two: The Letters and Words Set the Configuration

This is the half that trips buyers up, and it is where the real money and capability live. The parts of the name after the number are a configuration code, and they stack. Here is what each one means.

T, turning. A T model adds full turning capability to the 5-axis mill. The rotary table can spin at high speed, so the machine can turn a part as well as mill it, finishing a round-and-prismatic part complete in one setup. Without the T, the machine is a 5-axis mill, a strong one, but it does not turn. If your parts have turned features, the T is the difference between one machine and two.

AWC, Auto Work Changer. AWC is Mazak's multi-pallet automation, a work stocker that holds a large batch of pallets, typically on the order of 32 to 40, and feeds them to the machine under Smooth AWC software. It is how a VARIAXIS runs unmanned through nights and weekends across a mix of parts. An AWC machine is built to make parts while nobody is standing there. On the compact end, the VARIAXIS i-300 AWC is sold as an automation-first model with the work changer built into the machine, holding up to about 32 workpieces.

NEO, newer generation. NEO marks the updated generation of the platform, with refinements to the machine and the newer MAZATROL SmoothAi control. A NEO machine is generally younger and more current than a non-NEO i-series of the same size.

Because the pieces stack, they describe the machine in combination. The exact equipment can vary by size and generation, so the safe habit is to decode the name, then confirm the specifics against the machine's spec sheet before you buy.

The number tells you how big a part it can hold. The letters tell you whether it can also turn, whether it can run untended, and how new it is. Miss one and you can buy the wrong machine at the right price.

How to Read Any VARIAXIS i Model Name

Put the two halves together and any VARIAXIS i name decodes in seconds. Work the number first, then the rest left to right.

VARIAXIS i-600: a small-to-mid 5-axis milling machine, no turning, no pallet automation. A straightforward done-in-one 5-axis mill for complex mid-size parts.

VARIAXIS i-700T: a mid-large machine that both mills and turns in one setup. Built for parts with both turned and milled features.

VARIAXIS i-800 AWC NEO: a large, newer-generation 5-axis mill with multi-pallet automation for unmanned running. Big parts, lights-out, latest control.

Which VARIAXIS Fits Which Work

Match the machine to the part, not to the longest name you can afford. If you run small, tight-tolerance complex parts, an i-500 or i-600 covers a lot of ground in a smaller footprint. If your parts are larger or heavier, step up to the i-700 or i-800, and if they carry both turned and milled features, the T version turns two operations into one. If you are chasing unmanned production across a family of parts, the AWC is what earns its keep, running the machine through the hours nobody is there. And if you want the newest machine and control, that is what NEO buys you.

The mistake to avoid is buying capability you will not use. Turning and pallet automation are worth real money, and they are worth it only if your parts and your production use them. A shop running simple 5-axis parts does not need an i-800T AWC. A shop trying to finish mill-turn parts complete, or to run lights-out, should not settle for a base machine just to save on the sticker. The letters are the decision.

The Configurations You Will See Used

A few VARIAXIS i configurations turn up far more often than the rest, and knowing them helps you move when the right one appears. Plain 5-axis milling machines in the i-600 and i-700 sizes are the most common, because they cover the broad middle of complex-part work. The T turning versions and the AWC automation machines are less common and command more, because turning and unmanned pallet running are capabilities shops pay up for. NEO machines are the newest and priciest, carrying the current control and the least age.

When a clean example in the size and configuration you actually need comes up, with its tooling and a supported control, it tends to move quickly, because these are capable machines and buyers know it. The rarer the configuration, the more it pays to confirm it is exactly what your parts need before you commit, because you may wait a while for another.

Buying a Used VARIAXIS i: What to Check

Confirm the configuration matches the tag. Verify the machine actually has the turning function, the AWC, and the generation the name implies, and that all of it works. Options get listed loosely on the used market.

The tilt and rotary axes. The 5-axis table is the heart of the machine and the costliest thing to repair. Check the tilt and rotary for backlash, brake and clamp function, and accuracy across their travel.

Turning spindle on a T. On a T model the table turns at speed, so check the rotary and turning drive for condition, since that is doing real cutting.

Control generation. Identify whether it is MAZATROL SmoothX or the newer SmoothAi, and confirm parts and support for that generation and that your CAM can post to it.

AWC and tooling. If it has the Auto Work Changer, cycle it and confirm the pallet count and that the automation software runs. Then check spindle condition, hours, probing, and what tooling and fixtures come with the machine.

Resell CNC Take

The VARIAXIS i-Series is some of the best 5-axis value on the used market, and one of the easiest families to buy wrong if you shop the number alone. We see shops pay for turning and an Auto Work Changer they never use, and others buy a base i-mill and then wish they could turn or run lights-out. Bring us the parts you want to run and how you want to run them, and we will match you to the exact VARIAXIS size and configuration that fits, then confirm a used one is actually built and working the way its tag claims. On a machine this capable, the spec sheet and the inspection matter more than anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the VARIAXIS i model naming mean?

A VARIAXIS i name has two parts. The number, from the compact i-300 up to i-1050, sets the size and workpiece capacity. The letters and words after it set the configuration: T for turning capability, AWC for Mazak's Auto Work Changer pallet automation, and NEO for the newer generation with the SmoothAi control. The pieces stack, so an i-800T AWC has both turning and automation.

What does the T mean on a Mazak VARIAXIS?

The T means the machine adds full turning to its 5-axis milling. The rotary table spins at high speed so the machine can turn a part as well as mill it, finishing parts with both turned and milled features in one setup. A VARIAXIS without the T is a 5-axis mill that does not turn.

What is AWC on a Mazak VARIAXIS?

AWC stands for Auto Work Changer, Mazak's multi-pallet automation. It is a work stocker that holds a large batch of pallets, typically around 32 to 40, and feeds them to the machine under Smooth AWC software so the VARIAXIS can run unmanned through nights and weekends across a mix of parts.

What is the difference between VARIAXIS i and i NEO?

NEO is the newer generation of the platform. A VARIAXIS i NEO is generally a younger machine with updates to the machine and the newer MAZATROL SmoothAi control, while the original i-series machines run the SmoothX control. Both are simultaneous 5-axis machining centers, so the difference is generation and control, not the basic concept.

How big a part can a VARIAXIS i hold?

It depends on the number. The i-600, for example, runs about a 600 by 500 mm table with a maximum workpiece around 700 by 450 mm, and the compact i-300 and the i-500 are smaller while the i-700, i-800, and i-1050 step up in table size and part weight. Confirm the exact table size, swing, and workpiece limits on the spec sheet for the specific model.

Is a used Mazak VARIAXIS i worth buying?

It can be strong value, because simultaneous 5-axis machines are expensive new and a well-kept used one can put done-in-one capability on the floor for far less. The keys are matching the size and configuration to your parts, and confirming on inspection that the tilt and rotary axes, any turning or AWC option, and the control are all present and working as the name implies.
