Tsugami Swiss-type sliding-headstock lathe machining a small precision part
CNC Brand Profile

Tsugami and the Name That Became a Word for Swiss

What is Tsugami known for?

Tsugami is a Japanese machine tool builder known above all for precision Swiss-type lathes, the sliding-headstock machines that turn small, slender, high-tolerance parts. Its roots go back to the 1920s and gauge-block manufacturing, and over the following decades it became so prominent in sliding-headstock turning that in many shops the name Tsugami is used almost interchangeably with the phrase Swiss machine. The company builds precision automatic lathes, turning centers, machining centers, grinding machines, and thread and form rolling machines, all organized around one specialty: machining small parts, often under about 38 millimeters, fast and accurately. That focus is why Tsugami dominates medical, electronics, and other small-precision-part work, and why its machines are sought after on the used market.

There is a certain kind of compliment a brand earns only by dominating a category so completely that its name becomes the category. In small-part precision turning, Tsugami is that name. Walk into a shop running Swiss work and you will hear people say they run Swiss machines, and as often as not the iron making those parts says Tsugami on it. That is not an accident of marketing. It is what happens when a company spends decades pushing one technology, the sliding-headstock lathe, further than almost anyone else.

This is a brand profile, not a spec sheet. To understand why a used Tsugami is worth knowing about, you have to understand what the company chose to be great at, the work its machines actually do, and what to look for when one changes hands. This walks through the origin, the Swiss-type specialty, the product line, the U.S. service picture, and the used-market case.

From Gauge Blocks to the Swiss Standard

Tsugami's roots reach back to the 1920s, when the company began in precision manufacturing making gauge blocks, the ground-and-lapped reference standards a shop measures against. That is a telling place to start, because gauge blocks are about as demanding a test of precision as manufacturing has, and a company that cut its teeth making them was built on accuracy from the beginning. Over the following decades Tsugami grew from that foundation into a full machine tool builder, headquartered in Tokyo, with production later expanding across Japan, China, and India.

Where Tsugami made its name was the sliding-headstock lathe. It was one of the builders that pioneered and advanced CNC Swiss-type turning, the technology that supports the bar right at the cut with a guide bushing and feeds it past the tool, so long, slender, tiny parts can be turned without deflecting. Tsugami pushed that technology hard enough, for long enough, that it became synonymous with the whole category. When a machinist says the shop runs Tsugamis, everyone knows exactly what kind of work that means: small, precise, high-volume turned parts.

You only earn this kind of reputation by dominating one thing completely. Tsugami spent decades on the sliding-headstock lathe until its name became a stand-in for the whole category of Swiss machine.

Built Around the Small Part

The organizing idea behind Tsugami is small-part machining, and everything about the machines serves it. The Swiss-type lathes are built for parts often under about 38 millimeters in diameter, the world of medical screws and implants, electronic contacts and connectors, fittings, pins, and shafts. On that work the guide-bushing principle is decisive, because it is the only practical way to hold a long, thin part rigid enough to machine it to a few microns. Tsugami builds these machines for speed, accuracy, and rigidity in equal measure, because small-part production lives and dies on holding a tight tolerance at high volume, part after part after part.

Modern Tsugami machines also blur the line into done-in-one. Many of the Swiss and mill-turn machines carry sub-spindles and live tooling, so a part can be turned, milled, drilled, cross-bored, and finished on the back side, all in one machine from bar stock, coming off complete. For a medical or electronics shop making complex little parts by the thousand, that is the whole game: raw bar in one end, finished part out the other, with no second operation and no handling in between.

The Product Line in Shop Language

Tsugami's catalog is broader than most people realize, though it is anchored by the Swiss machines. The precision automatic lathes are the core, sliding-headstock Swiss-type machines in a range of sizes for the smallest, most precise turned parts. Alongside them are precision turning centers for slightly larger or non-Swiss turning, and mill-turn machines that add heavy milling capability to the turning platform. Tsugami also builds machining centers, both vertical and horizontal, precision cylindrical and other grinding machines, and thread and form rolling machines. The through line across all of it is precision on the smaller end of the size scale, which is exactly the niche the company chose and mastered.

Reading a used listing, the things that matter are the machine type and size, whether it is a guide-bushing Swiss or a non-guide-bushing machine, and the options that make small-part work possible: sub-spindle, live tooling, the number of axes, and bar feed. A well-equipped Swiss with a sub-spindle and live tooling is a done-in-one machine and a very different tool, and price, from a basic single-spindle lathe.

U.S. Presence and Support

In North America, Tsugami is represented by Tsugami America, long associated with Rem Sales, based in Windsor, Connecticut, supported by a network of authorized distributors and technical centers. Rem Sales has built a particular reputation around the medical machining market, which is fitting, since medical small-part work is exactly where Swiss machines earn their keep. For a used buyer, that established support presence matters, and the machines typically run a FANUC control, the most widely supported control platform in the world, so parts, service, and operators are not hard to find. A used Tsugami is a supported machine, not an orphan, which is a real part of its value.

Where Tsugami Sits in the Market

In Swiss-type turning, the field narrows to a short list of serious names, and Tsugami sits at the front of it.

Brand Origin Known For
Tsugami Japan Swiss-type turning, small-part precision, speed and rigidity, name synonymous with Swiss
Citizen (Cincom) Japan Leading Swiss-type builder, deep in medical and electronics
Star Micronics Japan Swiss-type automatic lathes, strong reputation for rigidity and reliability
Okuma Japan Broad turning and machining, in-house control, competes on the larger end

Citizen and Star are the other two names in the Swiss triumvirate, and all three are excellent, shops develop strong loyalties to each. Citizen is deep in medical and electronics, Star is prized for rigidity and reliability, and Okuma competes more on the broader and larger turning end. Tsugami's position is the one that made its name a category: relentless focus on the sliding-headstock lathe and small-part precision, with a value and performance combination that put a lot of Tsugami iron on a lot of floors. For a buyer, the practical upshot is that a used Tsugami is proven, common, and supported, which is exactly what you want in a production Swiss machine.

Why Used Tsugami Holds Value

Swiss machines are among the most sought-after used tools in the market, because the work they do, medical, electronics, tight-tolerance small parts, is exactly the work that keeps shops busy and profitable. A used Tsugami holds value because that demand is steady, the machines are proven and common, and they run a widely supported FANUC control. For a shop looking to add Swiss capacity, a used Tsugami is often the fastest and most affordable way to get into that work without a new-machine price or lead time.

The one thing to understand is that a Swiss machine is a system, and the value depends on the whole system being intact. The guide bushing and collets, the sub-spindle, the live tooling, and the bar feeder are all part of what makes the machine productive, and they are specific to the machine and the work. A used Swiss without its support tooling is a fraction of a machine, so the diligence is in confirming the whole package is there and healthy.

What to Check When Buying a Used Tsugami

Spindle and sub-spindle condition. Check the main spindle and, if equipped, the sub-spindle for runout, bearing noise, and heat, and get hours. On a done-in-one Swiss, both spindles have to be healthy for the machine to earn its keep.

Guide bushing and collets. Confirm the guide bushing setup and collets are present and in good condition, since they are central to Swiss accuracy and specific to the stock sizes you will run.

Live tooling. If the machine has live tooling, run it and check each driven station for wear and reliable operation, because live tooling is a big part of the done-in-one value.

Bar feeder. Confirm the bar feeder is included and functions, since a production Swiss is only as productive as its bar feed, and a matched feeder is expensive to source separately.

Control generation. Verify the FANUC control generation is supported with parts available, and power the machine up to check for faults before committing.

Ways, slides, and accuracy. Check the slides and ways for wear and confirm the machine still holds size, since Swiss work lives at the few-micron level and worn motion shows up immediately.

Included tooling and documentation. Confirm what tooling, collets, guide bushings, and fixturing come with the machine, and get any manuals and parameter backups. These add real value and are slow to replace.

Coolant and filtration. Swiss machines run high-pressure coolant and generate fine chips. Confirm the coolant and filtration system is healthy, since it is essential to the machine's accuracy and tool life.

Who Runs Tsugami Machines

Tsugami machines live in the shops that make small, precise parts in volume. Medical and dental manufacturers run them for bone screws, implants, and surgical components held to unforgiving tolerances, a segment where Swiss machines are close to mandatory. Electronics and connector makers use them for tiny contacts, pins, and fittings. Aerospace, defense, and automotive shops run them for small precision components, and contract job shops that specialize in Swiss work build entire businesses on banks of these machines. What they all share is the same profile: parts small enough and precise enough that only a sliding-headstock machine can hold them, made in the kind of volume where speed and reliability decide whether the job is profitable. That is the exact work Tsugami built its name on.

Resell CNC Take

Swiss machines move fast on the used market, and Tsugamis move fastest, because the medical and small-part work they do is where the money is. When a well-equipped Tsugami comes available, buyers who run that work do not wait, and they should not. Our advice is to buy the whole system: confirm the sub-spindle, the live tooling, the guide bushing and collets, and the bar feeder are all there and healthy, because a Swiss without its support tooling is only half a machine. Get the complete package and a used Tsugami is one of the surest ways to buy into profitable small-part production.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tsugami known for?

Tsugami is a Japanese machine tool builder known above all for precision Swiss-type sliding-headstock lathes for small, high-tolerance parts. With roots in 1920s gauge-block manufacturing, it became so prominent in Swiss turning that its name is often used interchangeably with Swiss machine. It also builds turning centers, machining centers, grinders, and thread and form rolling machines, all focused on small-part precision.

Why is Tsugami associated with Swiss machines?

Because it pioneered and advanced the sliding-headstock CNC lathe for so long and so successfully that the name became a stand-in for the category. A Swiss-type lathe supports the bar with a guide bushing right at the cut and feeds it past the tool, which is what lets it turn long, slender, tiny parts accurately. Tsugami's dominance in that technology made its name synonymous with it.

What parts are made on Tsugami machines?

Small, precise parts, often under about 38 millimeters: medical screws and implants, electronic contacts and connectors, fittings, pins, and small shafts for aerospace, defense, and automotive. With sub-spindles and live tooling, many Tsugami machines produce these parts complete from bar stock in one machine, with no second operation.

Who are Tsugami's competitors?

In Swiss-type turning the main rivals are Citizen (Cincom), deep in medical and electronics, and Star Micronics, prized for rigidity and reliability, the three names that dominate the category. Okuma competes on the broader and larger turning end. Shops develop strong loyalties among them, but all are top-tier Swiss builders.

Is a used Tsugami worth buying?

Yes, for small-part precision work. Swiss machines are in steady demand because medical and electronics work is profitable, and a used Tsugami is proven, common, and runs a widely supported FANUC control. The key is buying the whole system: confirm the sub-spindle, live tooling, guide bushing and collets, and bar feeder are present and healthy before committing.

Where is Tsugami based in the United States?

Tsugami is represented in North America by Tsugami America, long associated with Rem Sales, based in Windsor, Connecticut, with a network of authorized distributors and technical centers and a strong focus on the medical machining market. That support presence, plus the widely supported FANUC control, is part of what makes a used Tsugami practical to own.
