Used Haas UMC-1250: Bigger Platter, Same 1,000 Pounds

The Haas UMC-1250 is the bigger UMC in almost every dimension that matters for part size: travel, platter and swing. It is not bigger in the one number that decides what you can bolt to the platter. That is still 1,000 pounds, the same as the UMC-1000 below it.

We covered the speed side of the UMC line in our UMC-750SS breakdown. The Haas UMC-1250 is a different question. It is about size, and about what size does and does not buy you.

Bigger Everywhere but the Load Rating

Haas Automation announced the UMC-1250 in June 2021, with deliveries expected to start that October. Haas's figures put it next to the Haas UMC-1000 like this:

Every line that describes how big a part can be went up. Every line that describes how much the trunnion can carry and hold stayed exactly where it was. The UMC-1250 is a UMC-1000 with more room, not a UMC-1000 with more muscle.

That matters most when you plan the fixture. The 1,000 lb rating covers the part, the vise, the fixture plate and anything else on the platter. A 30 in platter invites a bigger fixture, and a bigger fixture is where the weight goes. Add it up before you assume the bigger machine takes the heavier job.

Who the Extra Room Is For

The UMC-1250 suits parts that are large and light, such as aluminum housings, frames, large manifolds and multi-part fixtures, where the swing and travel run out on the smaller machine before the load rating does. The 39 in swing is the number to check first. If the part clears 34 in, the UMC-1000 may do the job on a smaller footprint. If it does not, the UMC-1250 is the next 40-taper step in the line.

If the part is heavy rather than large, the extra travel will not help, because the platter rating is the same. That job needs a different class of machine.

Three Machines Under One Number

Haas lists three versions of the UMC-1250. They share the frame, the 50 x 30 x 28 in envelope and the 30 in, 1,000 lb platter. They do not share a spindle or a trunnion speed.

The Haas UMC-1250SS makes the same trade we described on the UMC-750SS: much faster rotary moves and rapids for parts with many faces and short cuts. The Haas UMC-1250/50 is the one that changes what the machine can cut. It doubles spindle power to 60 hp, nearly doubles spindle torque and takes tools up to 30 lb, against 12 lb on the 40-taper machines. It does not change the 1,000 lb platter rating.

The Numbers Underneath

Figures come from Haas's UMC-1250 product page and UMC Series flyer. The shipping weight comes from dealer and aggregator listings, so confirm it and the floor footprint before you plan rigging.

Probing and 5-Axis Software

Haas lists the Wireless Intuitive Probing System, or WIPS, Dynamic Work Offsets, Tool Center Point Control and a rotary-axis calibration tool among the UMC-1250's features, and its UMC flyer describes WIPS as standard on all UMCs. Dynamic Work Offsets let the control track the part's position as the trunnion moves. Tool Center Point Control keeps the tool tip on the path in the program during simultaneous 5-axis moves. On a used machine, confirm which of these are actually enabled, because software options are part of what you are paying for.

The Error Grows at the Edge of the Platter

Both Dynamic Work Offsets and Tool Center Point Control depend on the control knowing exactly where the B and C axes rotate. Haas stores those positions as the machine rotary zero point, or MRZP, offsets. In its UMC-750 service document, Haas describes measuring them with WIPS and a tooling ball, storing them in parameters and checking that the measured values fall within five counts of what is stored. It also says to recalibrate WIPS before setting them.

On a 30 in platter, a small error at the center of rotation becomes a bigger one at the edge of a large part. Users on the eMastercam forum describe needing MRZP accuracy within about 0.0002 in for DWO and TCPC work, and report that rotary brake clamping can shift the table by up to about 0.001 in on some machines, with heavy parts tilted to 90 degrees adding more. Those are user reports, not Haas figures, but they point to the right test: a cut, not a printout.

Used-Market Value

We are not going to put a price on a used UMC-1250. The machine has only been shipping since late 2021, public sales are few and an asking price is not a market value. These are the factors that move the number:

1. Which UMC-1250. Standard, SS or /50.
2. Spindle. 8,100, 12,000 or 15,000 rpm on 40 taper, or the 50-taper spindle.
3. Tool changer. 30+1, 50+1 or 70+1.
4. Software and probing. What is enabled, not what is listed.
5. Hours and history. Spindle hours, alarm history and any crash on the trunnion.

What to Check on a Used UMC-1250

Confirm the model. UMC-1250, UMC-1250SS or UMC-1250/50. Read the spindle plate and the machine data on the control.

Add up your platter weight. Part, vise and fixture together against the 1,000 lb rating.

Check the MRZP offsets. Recalibrate WIPS, measure the rotary centers with the calibration ball and compare them with what is stored.

Prove DWO and TCPC with a test cut. Cut a feature at several B and C positions and measure it.

Run both rotary axes. Move B and C through their full range and listen. On an SS, run them at full speed.

Check the brakes. Clamp the rotaries at an angle and indicate for movement.

Read the hours and alarm history. Check spindle hours and the alarm log on the control.

Cycle the tool changer. Run every pocket.

Plan the rigging. Listings put the shipping weight at about 18,820 lb.

Stepping Down a Size

If your parts fit a 34 in swing and a 25 in platter, the UMC-1000 carries the same 1,000 lb rating, the same rotary torque and the same 30 hp, 90 ft-lb spindle rating in a smaller envelope. Haas builds the UMC line in Oxnard, California, and supports it through its Haas Factory Outlet network. The UMC-1250 is a current Haas model, so parts and service for a used one come from the same source as for a new one.

Buy the UMC-1250 for size, not weight. It gives you 10 more inches of X, a 30 inch platter and 39 inches of swing, and it holds the same 1,000 pounds as the UMC-1000. Settle which of the three versions you are looking at, add up your fixture weight, then make the rotary centers prove themselves with a cut.
