Used Doosan Lynx 2100LB: The Plain One Turns the Biggest Part

On a used Lynx 2100 listing, the letters that get attention are the ones that add something. M for driven tools. Y for the Y axis. S for the sub spindle.

Every one of those letters also takes something away. Driven tools cost 50 mm of turning diameter and 40 mm of turning length. The sub spindle takes the tailstock. The optional 16 station turret on a Y axis machine takes the diameter down to 236 mm.

The 2100LB has none of those letters. It is two axes, a long bed and an 8 inch chuck, and on DN Solutions' own table it turns a 350 mm by 550 mm part. The LA turns the same size part with a smaller chuck. No other Lynx 2100 turns both a wider and a longer one.

Reading the Name

The Lynx 2100 model code is strict about order: L, then M, then S, then Y, then the capacity letter last. Each letter is present or absent.

So the LB is a long bed B class machine and nothing else. Its short bed sibling, the 2100B, has 340 mm of Z and turns a 330 mm long part. The long bed is what takes it to 550.

What the Options Would Have Cost

Here is the LB next to the configurations that add capability, using DN Solutions' published figures and the numbers in our family breakdown.

Adding driven tools removes one seventh of the turning diameter. The 16 station option on a Y axis machine removes another 21 percent of what is left. And on any machine with an S, the published turning length describes the envelope, not a shaft you can support between centers, because there is no tailstock to support it.

None of that makes the optioned machines worse. A part that needs cross holes, flats or back working belongs on one. But if your work is turning, boring, threading and grooving, those options are capacity you give up for features you would not use.

Buy the options your parts need and nothing else. If a part never sees a live tool, a 2100LB turns it with more diameter, more length, heavier tools and a tailstock than the optioned machines around it. Plain is not a compromise when the work is plain.

A, B or C: Why the LB Sits in the Middle

The capacity letter decides the spindle. DN Solutions publishes three classes on the long bed machines.

The LB trades 1,500 rpm against the LA for 14 mm more bar and a third more torque. Against the LC it gives up 16 mm of bar and 100 N·m, and keeps 13 mm of turning length and two turret stations the LC does not have, because the 10 inch headstock and chuck take up room in the same 560 mm of Z.

That makes the LB the middle of the family in bar and torque, and tied for the top in envelope. For a lot of general turning, that is the balance you want.

The Numbers Underneath

Specifications vary by year and build, so pull the sheet for the exact serial number in front of you. These are the published figures for the Lynx 2100LB.

Two numbers are worth confirming on a used machine. The turret station count, because DN Solutions' 2016 catalog listed 10 stations on the two axis machines and its 2023 catalog lists 12, so count them rather than trusting the model. And the Z figure on the listing: 560 mm, 22 inches, is the travel, while the turning length is 550 mm.

Which Control You Are Getting

The standard control is Fanuc, badged Doosan Fanuc and, from 2023, DN Solutions Fanuc i Plus with a 15.6 inch touchscreen. Siemens 828D is also offered, and it changes the published numbers.

On a two axis LB that difference is the whole story, because there are no driven tools or sub spindle where the Siemens figures run higher. A Siemens LB and a Fanuc LB are not interchangeable on price, and the Siemens machine has a thinner resale pool and narrower post processor support. Read the control off the machine.

Accuracy, and What Is Not Published

DN Solutions does not publish a positioning accuracy or repeatability figure for the Lynx 2100, as our family breakdown found after checking factory catalogs and spec tables across every model. Ellison Technologies lists repeatability of plus or minus 0.002 mm on X and 0.003 mm on Z for the 2100LB, but that is a distributor figure, not the builder's.

On a used machine, the useful test is a real one: turn a part, measure it, and turn another after the machine has warmed up.

Doosan and DN Solutions machines are supported in the United States by DN Solutions America and a dealer network, with Ellison Technologies as a major distributor. Used-Market Value

Four things move the number on a used 2100LB.

Control. Fanuc or Siemens, for the torque difference and the resale pool.

What comes with it. A barfeeder, parts catcher, tool presetter and chuck or collet package turn a lathe into a working cell, and they are expensive to add later.

Hours and use. Our family survey found that only three of roughly thirty used Lynx 2100 listings disclosed hours at all. Ask, and treat a missing answer as information.

Year and badge. Doosan or DN Solutions, and whether it is on the 2023 control package.

What to Check on a Used Lynx 2100LB

Read the whole model code. Confirm LB, not LMB or LSYB, and confirm the year and serial number.

Count the turret stations. Ten or twelve, and check indexing and clamping at every station.

Run the spindle. From low speed to 4,500 rpm, listening for bearing noise and checking runout at the nose.

Check the tailstock. Travel, quill function and alignment to the spindle, since it is one of the reasons to choose this machine.

Look at the ways and covers. Way cover damage, wiper wear and chips packed where they should not be.

Confirm the extras work. Barfeeder interface, parts catcher and presetter should be shown working, not just listed.

Turn a part. Measure it, run the machine for an hour, and measure another.

Who Runs One

The 2100LB suits a shop turning shafts, bushings, fittings and similar parts up to 350 mm across and 550 mm long, from bar up to 65 mm or from chucked blanks, that does not need live tooling on the part. With a barfeeder it is a production machine. Without one it is a general turning lathe with a tailstock and a long bed.
