Used Haas VF-6: Same 64 Inches, Three Different Machines

Every Haas VF-6 has the same 64 inches of X, 32 of Y and 30 of Z. But a VF-6/40, a VF-6/50 and a VF-6SS are three different machines once the spindle starts turning. On a used VF-6, the slash or the suffix after the 6 tells you more than the year does.

Here is what the three versions share, where they split and how to pick the right one on the used market.

What the Haas VF-6 Is

The VF-6 is a CNC Vertical Machining Center from Haas Automation, one of the larger machines in the VF line. It gives you 64 inches of X travel over a 64 x 28 inch table, with 30 inches of Z for tall parts and fixtures. Haas's VF-8 shares the 64 inches of X with a wider 40 inches of Y.

Same Envelope, Three Machines

Figures are from Haas specifications as compiled in our VF family breakdown, plus used listings for the VF-6/50 tool changer. Older machines can differ, so confirm against the machine's own data plate.

The /40: The All-Rounder

The VF-6/40 is the standard machine: an 8,100 rpm, 40-taper inline direct-drive spindle with 30 hp and 90 ft-lb at 2,000 rpm, and a table rated for 4,000 lb. It handles general job shop work across a long table, such as long plates, multiple vises or several fixtures in a row.

Haas's 40-taper VFs can also be ordered with a two-speed gearbox, rated at 250 ft-lb at 450 rpm, for more low-end torque. If a used VF-6/40 has it, it is worth knowing about.

The /50: The Heavy Hitter

The VF-6/50 swaps to a 50-taper spindle on a two-speed geared head. The standard 7,500 rpm spindle makes 340 ft-lb at 700 rpm, almost four times the torque of the /40. That is the machine for big face mills, large drills and heavy roughing in steel.

Here's the part most buyers never think about: the optional 10,000 rpm spindle on the VF-6/50 is rated at 250 ft-lb at 700 rpm. The faster spindle gives up 90 ft-lb, about 26 percent, of the torque you buy a 50-taper machine for. On a used VF-6/50, check which spindle it has before you pay extra for the higher rpm.

The SS: Speed, With a Lighter Table

The VF-6SS Super Speed runs 12,000 rpm and 1,200 ipm rapids, double the /40's rapids. It keeps the same 30 hp and 90 ft-lb of torque, so it is faster, not stronger. And its table is rated for 2,000 lb, half the standard VF-6.

For aluminum and lighter parts where cycle time matters, the SS makes sense. For heavy fixtures, big steel plates or several loaded vises, the 2,000 lb rating may rule it out. There is no 50-taper Super Speed VF, so there is no VF-6SS/50.

Older VF-6s Read Differently

The VF-6 name has been around for a long time, and older machines do not always match current specs. Several 2004 VF-6 listings show a 40-taper spindle at 7,500 rpm and 20 hp, not today's 8,100 rpm and 30 hp. The control generation, the spindle and the lubrication system all changed over the years. Read the data plate and the option list, not just the model name.

VF-6 or VM-6?

Haas also builds the VM-6 with the same 64 x 32 x 30 inch travels. The VM-6 is the mold machine: its table carries T-slots in both directions plus dowel bores and tapped holes, and it comes with a 12,000 rpm spindle standard. What to Check on a Used Haas VF-6

• Confirm the version: /40, /50 or SS. It decides the spindle, the torque and the table load.
• On a /50, confirm whether it has the 7,500 or 10,000 rpm spindle, and check both gear ranges.
• On a /40, ask whether it has the optional two-speed gearbox.
• Match the table load to your work, especially on an SS.
• Check the control generation and the lubrication system for the machine's year.
• Run the spindle through its range, count the tool pockets and run several tool changes.
• Ask about options: through-spindle coolant, probing and 4th-axis wiring.

Pick the Spindle, Then the Year

A VF-6 gives you 64 inches of table no matter which version you buy. What it does with that table depends on the slash or the suffix: the /40 for general work, the /50 for heavy cutting and the SS for speed on lighter parts. Choose the version first, then shop the year.
