Samsung and the Nameplate That Tells You the Least
What is Samsung SMEC known for?
Samsung SMEC is a Korean machine tool builder known for value priced slant bed CNC lathes, vertical turning centers and vertical machining centers, sold under the Samsung badge for most of its history and under the SMEC badge since the mid 2010s. The business began inside Samsung Heavy Industries in 1988, was independent of the Samsung group by June 1999, listed on the KOSDAQ in 2009, and was formally renamed SMEC Co., Ltd. in 2014. It is not connected to Samsung Electronics. The company builds in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, with a second plant in Daegu opened in 2016, sells into more than 60 countries, and is supported in North America by SMEC America in New Jersey. Machines run Fanuc controls in most configurations, with Siemens and Mitsubishi as alternatives, so there is no proprietary control to strand a used buyer.
There is a lathe on our floor with SAMSUNG cast into the sheet metal, and it is the single most recognizable word in the building. Everybody knows that name. Phones, televisions, the screen you are reading this on. Which is exactly the problem, because almost nothing a buyer assumes when they read that badge is true.
The name does not point at the electronics company. It does not point at the company that supports the machine either, and it has not for more than twenty five years. Which is why the call we get about these always arrives as the same question, usually with a deal already on the table: is this thing an orphan, and if the spindle goes next year, who do I call? That is a fair question to be nervous about and it has a specific answer. This is a brand profile, not a spec sheet. Here is where these machines actually came from, when Samsung let go of them, where the Samsung corporate trail leads after that and why it is not where the other Korean brands come from, what the company builds today, and what to check before you buy one used.
It Was Never the Phone Company
Samsung is not one company. It is a chaebol, a Korean industrial group, and at its height it spanned shipbuilding, construction, insurance, chemicals, heavy equipment, aerospace, cars and electronics under a shared name. A Samsung badge in the 1990s told you which group a business belonged to. It told you nothing about which company built the thing.
The machine tool business started inside Samsung Heavy Industries, the shipbuilding and heavy equipment arm. SMEC's own corporate history dates the start of that machine tool business to 1988 on one page and 1989 on another, which is a small thing but a fitting one for a company whose identity has been hard to pin down for thirty years. Either way, the lathes came out of a shipbuilder, not out of consumer electronics, and they were never made by the division that makes phones.
Samsung Let Go in 1999
This is the fact that matters most and the one almost nobody has right. The machine tool business did not stay inside Samsung until some recent rebrand. By the end of the 1990s it had moved under Samsung Aerospace, and in June 1999 it went independent. The company's own history records it plainly: established independent from Samsung Aerospace Inc. as a machine tool building business. The line even spells the acronym backwards as "SEMC," which is its own small monument to how muddled this story has become.
Everything after that is an independent company's history, not Samsung's. A new factory was completed in Changwon in 2000. The ANYMILL and ANYTURN product lines arrived the same year. A million dollar export prize followed in 2001. The company was listed on the KOSDAQ in 2009. In February 2011 it merged with NewGrid Co., Ltd. and relisted, and in 2014 it took the name it uses now, SMEC Co., Ltd.
So the badge outlasted the ownership by fifteen years. A shop that bought a Samsung lathe in 2010 was buying from a company Samsung had already been out of for over a decade. SMEC stands for Samsung Machine tools Engineering Company, and the acronym keeps the name alive on purpose, because in a machine shop the word Samsung is worth more than any name a marketing department could invent.
The badge is the most famous word on the machine and the least informative. It names a group the builder left in 1999, in an industry the group never made the machine in. Everything a used buyer actually needs to know sits behind a name pointing somewhere else.
Where the Samsung Trail Actually Leads
Follow the parent company forward and it goes somewhere a machinist will recognize, which is where a second round of confusion starts.
Samsung Aerospace, the company the machine tool business left in 1999, was founded as Samsung Precision in 1977 and became Samsung Aerospace in 1987. In 2000 it was renamed Samsung Techwin after handing its aircraft business to Korea Aerospace Industries. Techwin held cameras, defense, power systems, semiconductor equipment and precision machinery. Samsung sold it to the Hanwha Group in a deal announced in late 2014 and completed on June 29, 2015, at which point it became Hanwha Techwin. What remained after further reorganization was renamed Hanwha Vision in March 2023.
So the corporate trail runs Samsung Heavy Industries, then Samsung Aerospace, then Samsung Techwin, then Hanwha. And here is the trap: that does not make a Samsung lathe and a Hanwha lathe related. Hanwha's machine tool business is its own and considerably older than the acquisition. Hanwha started building machine tools in 1977, produced Korea's first cam type lathe, the SAL-10, in 1983, and launched the ML series in 1998. None of that came from Samsung. The two brands share a corporate footnote and no engineering at all.
The practical version for a buyer holding a nameplate: if it is an SL, SLV, PL or MCV, you are looking at SMEC, and SMEC America is who you call. If it is a Swiss type sliding headstock machine, that is Hanwha, a separate company with its own history and its own parts counter, and we cover it in our Hanwha Brand Profile. Do not assume a shared lineage because a shared name appears somewhere in the corporate record.
You Can Watch the Name Change on Our Own Shelf
We do not have to argue this one from a corporate timeline. It is sitting in our own inventory, in order, with the badge changing partway down the list.
Badged Samsung. A 2011 SL-30 turning center with a bar feeder. A 2012 SL-45MC/2200 lathe. A 2015 MCV50 vertical mill.
Badged SMEC. A 2018 SL2000T2Y2 lathe. A 2020 SLV500-RH vertical turning center. A 2023 SLV500M RH vertical turning center. A 2024 MCV-6700N vertical machining center.
Same builder, same plants, same model families. SL is still SL and MCV is still MCV across the whole span. The only thing that changed is the word on the sheet metal, and it changed somewhere between 2015 and 2018, a few years after the 2014 legal rename, which is exactly how long it takes a badge to work its way through a product line and a dealer network.
That gap is worth holding onto, because it is the reason two machines with different names on them can be the same machine, and the reason a 2016 or 2017 example could carry either. Do not treat the badge as a model year marker or as evidence of a different builder. Read the model number instead.
What SMEC Builds Today
The machinery business runs out of Gimhae in Gyeongnam province, which serves as headquarters and plant, with a second production facility in Daegu completed in April 2016. The Daegu site covers 23,859 square meters and includes a building held at steady temperature and humidity for precision work. The company sells through domestic offices, agencies and overseas dealers into more than 60 countries.
One thing a buyer should know honestly: machine tools are one business among several. SMEC today runs a Machinery division alongside ICT, factory automation and convergence divisions, and its machinery arm also builds robots and parts tied to display panel production. This is not a company that does nothing but machine tools, the way Okuma or Makino does. Whether that matters to you depends on how much you weigh singular focus, and it is a fair thing to put on the scale rather than discover later.
The Lineup in Shop Language
SL series, slant bed CNC lathes. The core of the brand and the machines most shops mean when they say Samsung lathe. The range runs from the SL-15 and SL-2000 class at the small end, where an SL2000 carries an 8 inch chuck, up through SL-25, SL-30, SL-35, SL-45 and on to SL-65 and SL-80 for genuinely large work, with bed length called out in the model on the bigger machines. Variants add sub spindles, Y axis and live tooling.
SLV series, vertical turning centers. The work sits on a table with the spindle overhead, which suits large diameter, heavy or awkward parts that would be a fight hanging off a horizontal chuck. Our 2020 and 2023 machines are both from this family.
PL series, large lathes. The heavier turning machines above the SL range.
MCV, LCV and PCV series, vertical machining centers. Conventional three axis vertical mills across a wide table range, from the MCV-400 up through MCV-850, MCV-1060 and the current MCV-6700N. SMEC also lists tapping centers, five axis machines, laser equipment and automation packages that can be retrofitted to machines already on a floor.
The Control Is the Real Answer
If you take one practical thing from this article, take this. The fear with a badge nobody can explain is that you will end up holding an orphan, a machine whose builder is gone and whose electronics nobody can service. On these machines that fear is mostly misplaced, and the reason is the control.
Samsung and SMEC machines run Fanuc in most configurations, with the 0i series through the current 0i-TF and 0i-TF Plus on lathes and 0i-MF on machining centers. Siemens 828D shows up as an alternative on lathes, mostly in European market machines, and Mitsubishi M80A appears on some machining centers. What is absent is the thing that actually strands people: there is no proprietary in house control here. No bespoke operating system, no single source for boards, no dependence on one company's continued willingness to support twenty year old electronics.
That changes the risk calculation on a used purchase more than any corporate history does. A Fanuc controlled lathe is serviceable by a very large population of technicians, parts are available from multiple channels, and any competent turning programmer already knows the control. Builders who make their own controls, Okuma among them, offer real advantages in exchange, but a Fanuc machine from a mid sized builder is a far easier machine to keep running in year fifteen than a proprietary one from the same tier.
U.S. Presence and Support
North America is handled by SMEC America, which operates from Englewood and Northvale, New Jersey, and covers the United States, Mexico and Canada with turning centers, machining centers, tapping centers and automation. The company advertises a separate service and parts phone line and a dedicated parts email address alongside its sales contacts, and works through a distributor network rather than a direct sales force everywhere.
The honest read: this is a real but modest presence. It is not the density of Haas, Mazak or DN Solutions, and a buyer in a market without a nearby distributor should expect to do more of the coordination themselves. What exists is a named U.S. entity with a parts counter you can reach and a company still shipping new machines, which is a materially different situation from a truly orphaned brand. Confirm parts availability for your specific model and control generation before you commit, rather than assuming it from the badge in either direction.

Each argues something different. Doosan and DN Solutions is the safer default on support depth and will cost more used for the same capability, which is the trade most buyers are actually making when they consider a Samsung. Hwacheon sells in house iron and vertical integration. Hanwha is not a competitor at all, it is the other half of the same family tree building an unrelated kind of machine. Samsung SMEC's argument is capability per dollar, particularly if you want a vertical turning center or a large SL lathe, where the alternatives at that price are thin.
What a Used Samsung or SMEC Is Worth
In our experience buying and selling these since 2008, they sit in a specific place in the used market: they trade under the Japanese majors and under Doosan for comparable capability, and they get bought by shops that want the capability and are willing to do their own homework on support. Part of that gap is the smaller service network, which is a real risk being priced. Part of it is the badge confusion this article exists to clear up, which is not.
Configuration moves the number more than the badge. A live tooling and Y axis SL is a different machine and a different price from a two axis SL of the same size. Sub spindle, bar feeder, steady rest, tailstock type and chip handling all move the figure.
Control generation is the second lever. A supported current generation Fanuc is worth real money over an older one, because it decides serviceability for the rest of the machine's life.
The vertical turning centers are the scarcer item. Vertical turning machines of any brand come across our floor less often than horizontal lathes, and a shop that needs the work held on a table cannot substitute a horizontal machine for it. Both of those support values on the SLV range more than on the SL range.
What to Check When Buying a Used Samsung or SMEC
These are the inspections Resell CNC handles before one of these ships, and they apply to any machine in this class.
Read the model number, not the badge. Samsung and SMEC examples of the same model are the same machine. Identify the exact model and variant, including sub spindle, Y axis and live tooling, from the machine's own plate rather than from the listing text.
Identify the control generation exactly. Fanuc 0i covers a lot of years. Boot it cold, note the exact series, pull the alarm history, and get a parameter backup in your hands before the machine leaves the seller's floor.
Confirm parts availability for that model. Call SMEC America's parts line with the model and serial before you buy. This is a five minute call that answers the only real question about the brand, and doing it turns an assumption into a fact.
Spindle bearing condition. Run it through the full speed range and listen at the top. Indicate the spindle nose. On a turning center the spindle is the most expensive single thing to put right.
Way and ballscrew wear across full travel. Most of the work happens in one zone, usually near the chuck on a lathe or the center of the table on a mill. Check for a step or hollow there and compare it against the ends of travel.
Turret index and repeatability. Cycle every station several times and listen for a hard, consistent seat. On a live tooling turret, run the driven stations under power too.
Chuck, draw tube and bar feeder. Confirm the chuck actuates and holds at pressure, check jaw condition, and verify the bar capacity you are being sold matches the draw tube actually fitted. On the bar fed machines, cycle the feeder with material.
On a vertical turning center, check the table and the chuck plane. Indicate the table for runout and flatness, and confirm the chuck or fixture mounting is undamaged. This is where the accuracy of the whole machine lives.
Coolant and chip handling. Look in the tank and under the pans. A neglected chip system is a reliable indicator of how the rest of the machine was treated.
Documentation and electrical. Confirm manuals and wiring diagrams exist and that the machine is wired for your plant voltage. On an imported machine neither is a given.
Who Runs Them
General job shops that need a capable turning center without paying the premium for the top tier badge. Contract shops adding a second or third lathe where the first one is already a Japanese or Korean major and the new one only has to earn its keep. Shops taking on large diameter or heavy plate style turning work, where the SLV vertical machines solve a problem a horizontal lathe cannot. Automotive and appliance tier suppliers, which is the market these machines were built for from the start. Maintenance and captive shops inside larger plants. The common thread is a buyer weighing capability against price with their eyes open, rather than one buying a name.
Resell CNC Take
The call always opens the same way. Somebody has found a Samsung lathe, the price looks good, and they want to know whether the company still exists. The answer is yes, under a name they have not heard, and the machine on the Fanuc control is easier to keep running than the badge suggests. What we tell them to do is the same thing we do ourselves: read the model plate, identify the control generation, and call the parts counter with the serial before agreeing on a number. Do that and the discount on this brand starts looking like an opportunity instead of a warning.

Is Samsung SMEC the same company as Samsung Electronics?

Are Samsung SMEC and Hanwha machine tools related?
Only through a corporate footnote, not through the machines. The machine tool business left Samsung Aerospace in June 1999 to become SMEC. Samsung Aerospace was renamed Samsung Techwin in 2000 and sold to the Hanwha Group in June 2015, so SMEC's former parent did eventually become a Hanwha company.
