Okuma-style CNC control pendant on a premium turning-milling machine, representing single-source engineering
CNC Brand Profile

Okuma: The Only Builder That Makes Its Own Machine and Its Own Control

What is Okuma?

Okuma is a Japanese machine tool builder, founded in 1898, that is the industry's rare single-source manufacturer: it designs and builds its own CNC control, drives, motors, encoders, and spindles, along with the machine itself. Most builders buy a control from an outside supplier and integrate it, but Okuma has made its own OSP control since 1963, so the whole machine is engineered as one system. That integration is the root of Okuma's reputation for reliability and for its Thermo-Friendly Concept, a thermal-stability design that holds accuracy through long runs. The lineup spans LB and LU turning centers, GENOS machining centers and lathes, MULTUS multitasking machines, MU and MB 5-axis machining centers, and large double-column machines. For a buyer, the Okuma name signals a premium, reliability-first machine whose control and mechanics were built to work together.

Almost every machine tool on a shop floor is a partnership. One company builds the iron and the mechanics, and another company, usually a big control supplier, provides the brain. The builder integrates the two and ships the machine. It is a proven way to build, and most of the industry works exactly like that. Then there is Okuma, which does something almost no one else does: it builds the brain too.

Okuma makes its own CNC control, and it has since 1963. That one fact shapes everything about the company, from how its machines hold accuracy to why they have the reliability reputation they do. This is a look at where Okuma came from, why building its own control matters, what the model families actually are, how it stacks up against the other premium builders you would cross-shop, and what a used Okuma is worth on a floor.

From Noodle Machines to Machine Tools

Okuma did not start in metalworking. In 1898, Eiichi Okuma founded a company in Nagoya, Japan that made machines for producing noodles. The connection to machine tools came from a problem: to make the precise parts his noodle machines needed, Okuma had to build a high-precision lathe himself. That in-house lathe was good enough that the company followed the thread into machine tools, and by 1918 Okuma was building lathes as a product. It is one of the better origin stories in the industry, a precision machine tool company that grew out of the need to make its own parts better.

More than 125 years later, that instinct to build what it needs in-house is still the center of the company. Okuma calls its philosophy monozukuri, a Japanese idea that translates loosely as the art of making things, where craftsmanship and engineering meet. Today Okuma is one of Japan's largest and most established machine tool builders, headquartered in Oguchi, Aichi Prefecture, and it has carried that make-it-ourselves mindset all the way down to the one component almost everyone else buys.

The Control Changes Everything

In 1963, Okuma developed the OSP, its own numerical control with absolute position feedback. That made Okuma Japan's only comprehensive manufacturer of both the machine and the control, and it still sets the company apart today. Okuma is the industry's single-source builder: it designs and makes its own CNC control, its own drives and motors, its own encoders, its own spindles, and its own automation, in addition to the machine. Nearly every competitor sources the control, and often the drives and motors, from an outside supplier and integrates them.

Owning the control is not a bragging right, it is an engineering advantage. When the same company designs the control, the feedback devices, the drives, and the mechanics, those pieces are built to talk to each other instead of being matched to a spec and integrated afterward. The control knows exactly how the machine is built, and the machine is built exactly for the control. That is what lets Okuma do things like the Thermo-Friendly Concept, where the control actively compensates for the machine's thermal growth to hold size through a long run. You can only compensate that precisely when you own both halves of the system.

Most builders make a machine and buy a brain for it. Okuma makes both, and has since 1963. That is why an Okuma control and an Okuma machine behave like one thing instead of two things bolted together.

What Single-Source Buys You

The practical payoff of the single-source approach is reliability and accuracy that hold up over time. Because Okuma engineers the whole chain, from encoder to drive to spindle to control, there are fewer integration seams where trouble hides, and the machine behaves predictably. This is a big part of why Okuma has the reputation it does among shops that run hard and cannot afford surprises. It is also why the OSP is known as an open, capable control that shops tend to like once they learn it.

There is a flip side worth naming honestly. Because the OSP is Okuma's own ecosystem, it is different from the Fanuc-style controls a lot of machinists learn first, so there is a short learning curve, and a shop wants to confirm control support and generation on any machine it buys. In practice this is rarely a problem, because Okuma has strong support and a large installed base, but it is the one thing that makes an Okuma feel different from a machine running a mainstream control. For most buyers, the tradeoff lands heavily in Okuma's favor: a little unfamiliarity up front in exchange for a machine engineered as a single, coherent system.

The Lineup in Shop Language

Okuma's range is broad, but it sorts into a few clear families. On the turning side, the LB and LU lines are the horizontal turning centers, the SPACE TURN lathes that run from compact production machines up to the large, big-bore LB models built for heavy and oil-country work. The MULTUS line is Okuma's multitasking turn-mill family, machines like the U and B series that fuse turning and milling with a milling spindle and a sub-spindle to finish complex parts complete in one setup.

On the milling side, GENOS is the value line, vertical and horizontal machining centers and lathes that deliver Okuma engineering at a sharper price, now including 5-axis models like the GENOS M560V-5AX. The MU and MB families are the dedicated 5-axis machining centers for done-in-one work on complex parts, and the MCR double-column machines handle large dies, molds, and big structural parts. Okuma also builds grinders and laser machines, but the turning centers, multitasking machines, and machining centers are what you will run into most on the used market. Across the whole range, the common thread is the same OSP control and the same single-source engineering.

U.S. Presence and Support

Okuma America is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and supports the U.S. market through a large distributor network along with its technology partner program, the collaboration formerly known as Partners in THINC. For a used buyer that footprint matters, because parts, service, and applications help for the OSP control and Okuma mechanics are well established in North America. A used Okuma is not an orphan machine from a builder with no presence here, it is a well-supported platform with a deep installed base, which is exactly what you want when you are buying a machine with its own control ecosystem.

How Okuma Compares

Builder HQ Distinctive Strength
Okuma Japan Single-source: own OSP control, drives, motors, and spindles, plus thermal stability
Mazak Japan Own Mazatrol control and very broad multitasking lineup
DMG MORI Japan / Germany Broadest global premium lineup and advanced technology
DN Solutions (Doosan) South Korea Value pricing and the largest Korean dealer and parts network

Each of these makes a strong argument. Mazak, like Okuma, builds its own control, the Mazatrol, and offers one of the widest multitasking lineups in the industry. DMG MORI fields the broadest global premium range and pushes advanced technology hard. DN Solutions, the former Doosan machine tool business, competes on value and the largest Korean support network. Okuma's argument is the completeness of its single-source engineering: it is the builder that makes the control, the drives, the motors, the encoders, and the spindles itself, and leans that integration into thermal stability and long-run reliability. If what you value most is a machine whose brain and body were engineered as one, Okuma is the clearest expression of that idea in the industry.

The Value of Buying One Used

A new Okuma is a premium machine at a premium price, which is exactly why the used market is where many shops get into one. A well-kept used Okuma puts single-source engineering, the OSP control, and the thermal stability on a floor for a fraction of new-machine money. Because these machines are built to run hard for a long time and the engineering ages well, a used one often has plenty of life left when it was maintained, and the traits that make an Okuma worth owning are the ones that last.

As with any premium machine, the value lives in condition and configuration. Hours and maintenance matter, and the spindle, the ways, and the OSP control tell most of the story. Because the control is Okuma's own, it is worth confirming the OSP generation and that it is supported and fits your programming and CAM. Do that, buy a clean and well-matched machine, and a used Okuma is one of the more dependable premium buys on the used market, at a price the new machine never offered.

Who Runs Okuma

Okuma lands in shops that hold tight tolerances and run long, and cannot afford a machine that drifts or goes down. Precision turning and production shops run LB and LU lathes for shafts, hubs, and the big-bore work the large models handle. Complex-part shops run MULTUS multitasking machines to finish turned-and-milled parts complete in one setup. Mold, die, aerospace, and precision job shops run MU and MB 5-axis machines and MCR double-column machines for complex and large work, and cost-conscious shops that still want Okuma engineering reach for the GENOS line. The common thread is a shop that values accuracy and reliability over the lowest sticker price, and wants a machine whose control and mechanics were built together. That is the shop Okuma has built for since it made its first lathe.

Resell CNC Take

Okuma is one of the safer premium buys on the used market, because the single-source engineering ages well and the machines hold their accuracy. The whole decision comes down to condition, configuration, and the control, so before you buy we check the spindle, the ways, and the OSP generation, and confirm the machine fits your programming. Whether it is an LB turning center, a MULTUS, or a 5-axis MU, tell us the parts and the tolerances you run and we will tell you whether a used Okuma is the machine, and which one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Okuma?

Okuma is a Japanese machine tool builder, founded in 1898, that is the industry's rare single-source manufacturer, designing and building its own CNC control, drives, motors, encoders, and spindles along with the machine. It has made its own OSP control since 1963, which lets it engineer the whole machine as one system. Okuma is known for reliability and for its Thermo-Friendly thermal-stability design, with a lineup spanning LB and LU lathes, GENOS, MULTUS, and 5-axis machining centers.

Why does Okuma make its own control?

Because owning the control lets Okuma engineer the machine as one integrated system. When the same company designs the control, encoders, drives, and mechanics, those parts are built to work together rather than integrated after the fact. This is what enables features like the Thermo-Friendly Concept, where the control compensates for the machine's thermal growth, and it is a major reason for Okuma's reliability reputation.

What is the OSP control?

The OSP is Okuma's own numerical control, first developed in 1963 with absolute position feedback and still built in-house today. It is an open-architecture control designed to work with Okuma's drives, motors, encoders, and spindles as a single system. On a used machine it is worth confirming the OSP generation, that it is supported, and that it fits your programming and CAM post.

What is the difference between Okuma's LB, MULTUS, and GENOS lines?

LB and LU are the horizontal turning centers, the SPACE TURN lathes from compact to large big-bore machines. MULTUS is the multitasking turn-mill family that combines turning and milling to finish complex parts in one setup. GENOS is the value line of machining centers and lathes that delivers Okuma engineering at a sharper price. All share the same OSP control and single-source engineering.

Is Okuma a good machine tool brand?

Okuma is widely regarded as a premium, reliability-first builder, largely because it makes its own control and mechanics as one integrated system. Its machines are known for holding accuracy over long runs, helped by the Thermo-Friendly design, and it has a long U.S. support history through Okuma America in Charlotte, North Carolina. For shops that prioritize accuracy and uptime, it is a top-tier choice.

Is a used Okuma worth buying?

Often yes. A new Okuma is premium-priced, so the used market is how many shops get the single-source engineering, OSP control, and thermal stability for far less. Because the machines age well, a clean, well-maintained used Okuma can be a strong value. The keys are checking spindle and way condition, confirming the OSP control generation and support, and matching the model to your work.
