Used Haas VF-1: Same 20 Inches Since 1988, Five Different Spindles

Every Haas VF-1 ever built has the same 20 x 16 x 20 inch envelope. That is why the name tells you so little. What changed across almost four decades is the spindle, the servos and the control, and a used VF-1 can come with any of them.

We have already told the story of how the VF-1 made CNC affordable in our Machining Monday on the Haas VF-1. This is the other half: what a buyer is actually looking at when a used Haas VF-1 shows up in a listing.

The Envelope That Never Moved

Haas Automation introduced the VF-1 at IMTS 1988 as its first machining center. Modern Machine Shop, reporting on Haas's 125,000th machine, which Haas chose to make a VF-1, noted that the current model keeps the same 20 x 16 x 20 inch travels as the original. The table is still 26 x 14 inches. Haas rates it for 3,000 lb evenly distributed, with 4 to 24 inches from the spindle nose to the table.

Nearly everything else on the machine has been replaced at least once. The same Modern Machine Shop report lists what changed between the 1988 machine and the modern one.

The table tells you why the name is a poor guide. A 1991 VF-1 and a 2021 VF-1 will both fit the same part in the same envelope. They will not cut it at the same speed, and they will not be fixed with the same parts.

Five Spindles You Will Find on a Used VF-1

The spindle is where the VF-1 changed most, and it is the first thing to settle on a used one. These are the configurations that show up in Haas's own figures, trade coverage and dealer listings.

The 2012 change is the line that matters most. That year Haas said all VF-1 through VF-12 40-taper machines were now equipped with an 8,100 rpm inline direct-drive spindle on a 30 hp vector drive. A Practical Machinist thread from December 2012 describes the change as happening earlier that year, and at least one dealer lists a 2011 VF-1 with the 8,100 rpm spindle, so a machine built close to the change can go either way. Read the spindle, not the year.

The gearbox is the other line. Haas's current figures put the standard spindle at 90 ft-lb at 2,000 rpm and the optional gearbox at 250 ft-lb at 450 rpm, almost three times the torque low in the speed range. If your work runs large face mills, big drills or heavy taps in steel, a gearbox VF-1 is a different machine from a direct-drive VF-1 that looks the same in a photo.

Which Control You Are Getting

Haas has written its own control since the VF-1 first shipped. That is a strength on the used market, because one company supports the machine and the control. It also means the control generation matters as much as the spindle.

Older VF-1s run what Haas now calls the classic control. Machines from roughly the late 1990s to the mid-2000s are the ones forum posters warn about most. They report that boards for these controls can be hard to find, that faults on the Mocon and I/O boards can be hard to tell apart, and that keypad membranes wear out. They also describe control upgrade quotes running into five figures.

Haas moved to its Next Generation Control in the mid-2010s, and a dealer guide dates the cutover to 2016. For a buyer the answer is simple: check the pendant. A VF-1 built near the change can carry either control, and a listing that gives only the year has not told you which.

VF-1 or VF-2

The VF-1's closest relative is the Haas VF-2, which shares the 16 inch Y and 20 inch Z but gives you 30 inches of X on a 36 x 14 inch table. The choice is about part length and fixture count, not capability. If you run two vises side by side or long parts, the extra 10 inches of X is the reason to step up. One more name you may see: the Haas VF-1YT/EU. Haas sells it in Europe with 508 mm of travel on all three axes, a 660 x 457 mm table and a 10,000 rpm spindle. It is not a North American VF-1 with a different badge.

Used-Market Value

We are not going to put a price on a used VF-1. Asking prices are not market values, and the range of VF-1s for sale runs from 1990s machines to recent ones. These are the factors that move the number, in roughly this order:

1. Spindle generation. The 2012 inline spindle and anything later sit well above a belt-drive machine.
2. Control generation. Next Generation Control or classic, and which classic.
3. Options. Gearbox, 10,000 rpm, side-mount tool changer, through-spindle coolant, probing, a 4th-Axis and software options such as rigid tapping.
4. Condition. Backlash, spindle health and how hard it has been run.

What to Check on a Used VF-1

Read the spindle and control first. Confirm the spindle type, the drive and the control on the machine, not on the listing.

Do not trust the hour meter alone. Forum posters report that hour meters can reset during a software reload or memory loss. Judge wear from the paint, the keypad, the chip auger and the way-cover gutters as well.

Indicate backlash on every axis. Compare what you measure with the backlash values in the parameters.

Check drawbar force. A weak drawbar shows up as tool pullout and poor finish.

Warm up the spindle. Run it near top speed for about 30 minutes and check its temperature, a test forum posters recommend.

Home it twice. Home the machine, home it again and confirm the positions match.

Cycle the tool changer. On a carousel changer, watch for carousel wobble and worn forks. Run every pocket.

Confirm the software options. Rigid tapping, extra memory and other features can require paid unlock codes. Make sure what the listing promises is actually enabled.

Watch a real part run. A test cut proves the spindle, the axes and the control at once.

Who Runs One

The 20 x 16 inch envelope suits small aluminum and steel parts, fixtures and prototype work, and the 3,000 lb table rating leaves room for a vise or a rotary. When parts or fixtures need more length, the VF-2 is the next step in the same family.

Haas builds the VF-1 in Oxnard, California, and supports it through its Haas Factory Outlet network. Because Haas makes both the machine and the control, parts and service for a VF-1 come from one source. For a classic-control machine, ask the local Haas Factory Outlet what is still supported for that serial number before you buy.

Resell CNC Take

The VF-1 has kept the same envelope since 1988, so the envelope cannot tell you what you are buying. Read the spindle first, then the control, then the options. A 2012 or later inline spindle on the Next Generation Control is a different purchase from a belt-drive classic-control machine with the same name and the same 20 inches.
