Used Toshiba BTD-130H: 44,000 Pounds on the Table

The Toshiba BTD-130H puts a 5.1 inch spindle over a table Shibaura rates for 44,000 pounds. Its sibling, the BTD-130S, has the same 1,800 x 2,200 mm table and the same 130 mm spindle, rated for 26,400 pounds. Here is what the H carries, what the model name tells you and what to check on a used Toshiba boring mill.

On a BTD, the number tells you the spindle. On the BTD-130, the H and S versions also carry very different table ratings. Both matter more than the year when the parts on that table weigh tons.

Toshiba Machine, Now Shibaura Machine

The BTD series comes from Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. of Japan. Toshiba Corporation sold its stake in March 2020, and the company was renamed Shibaura Machine Co., Ltd. in April 2020. Older BTDs carry the Toshiba name, and current ones carry Shibaura Machine, so the same model can show up on the used market under either badge.

The 130 Is the Spindle

BTD model numbers track spindle diameter in millimeters. The BTD-130H has a 130 mm, or 5.1 inch, boring spindle. The line also includes 110 mm and 200 mm spindle models, so the number is the first thing to check against your bore sizes.

The spindle extends out of the head on its own axis, called W, which lets the machine reach into a deep bore without moving the table. Shibaura lists a 3-step low, middle and high spindle drive for a wide speed range, high rigidity and high torque, long-span spindle bearings and an automatic spindle end clamp.

44,000 Pounds on the Table

Shibaura lists the BTD-130H.R22 table at 1,800 x 2,200 mm, or 70.8 x 86.6 inches, rated for 20,000 kg, or 44,000 pounds. The table is a full rotary B-Axis that indexes to 0.0001 degree with a locating pin every 90 degrees, and Shibaura lists B-Axis positioning from 0 to 90 degrees in 15 seconds using a drive mechanism it describes as patent pending.

That rotary table is the point of a table-type boring mill. A heavy casting or weldment can be set up once, then rotated to bore and face each side in the same setup, with the faces held square to each other by the table instead of by a second setup. H Versus S

Shibaura also lists a BTD-130S.R22. Here are the two side by side, from Shibaura's published figures.

One row tells the story. Same spindle, same table size, same X travel and same tool count, but the H is rated for 8,000 kg more on the table. Shibaura's spec pages do not explain the letters, so read the load rating, not the letter, when you match a machine to your heaviest part.

Resell CNC Take

Buy a boring mill by the heaviest part and the deepest bore. The spindle number tells you the bore, and the table rating tells you the part. On a BTD-130, the H and the S share both a spindle and a table size, and the load rating is what separates them.

The Control

Shibaura lists the BTD-130H.R22 with its own TOSNUC 999 control, which supports USB flash drives and compact flash cards. Older BTDs can run earlier TOSNUC generations, as our 1988 BTD-11B does with a Tosnuc 3, and the BTD-130S.R22 is listed with a FANUC 31i-B Plus. On a used machine, the control generation decides programming, backup and parts support, so identify it before you compare prices.

No tool changer.

Used-Market Value

Spindle and table rating. These two numbers set what work the machine can take. Match both to your parts first.

Control generation. TOSNUC 999, earlier TOSNUC controls and FANUC builds program, back up and source parts differently.

Tool changer. A 60-tool changer runs long jobs without manual tool swaps. Older BTDs, including our BTD-11B, may have none. The background is in our automatic tool changer Machining Monday.

Attachments and chip handling. Chip conveyors, coolant guarding and any facing or right-angle heads add value when they come with the machine.

What to Check on a Used Toshiba BTD-130H

Data plate. Model, R version, year, control and whether it is badged Toshiba or Shibaura Machine.

Spindle. Noise, heat and run-out in all three speed ranges, and the automatic spindle end clamp.

W-Axis. Smooth extension and retraction of the spindle over its full stroke.

Rotary table. Indexing accuracy, the locating pin at each 90 degree position and the table clamps.

Ways and covers. Condition of the ways, screws and covers on every axis.

Tool changer. Run every pocket.

Control. Version, alarm history and a full backup of programs and parameters.

A part to print. Bore and face a part, rotate the table and check the faces for square.

Who Runs One

A BTD-130H suits shops machining large, heavy parts that need boring, facing and milling on several sides: castings, weldments, housings and frames that fit a 1,800 x 2,200 mm table and weigh up to 20,000 kg. The rotary table lets those parts be finished on multiple faces in one setup, and the 5.1 inch spindle and W-Axis extension reach into deep bores.
