Workholding Is Being Engineered for Robots, Not Wrenches

What is automation-ready workholding?

Automation-ready workholding is fixturing built so a robot or pallet changer can load, clamp and unload the work without a person turning a handle. It rests on two ideas. Zero-point pallet systems locate a pallet, vise or fixture on the machine table to a repeatable position (SCHUNK lists repeat accuracy under 0.005 mm for its VERO-S NSE3), so the work can be set up off the machine and swapped in. Powered clamping, pneumatic, hydraulic or electric, replaces the hand crank so every cycle clamps with the same force on a signal from the control. SCHUNK, EROWA, System 3R, Jergens, Midaco and HWR all sell workholding built for robotic handling.

Looking for a used VMC to automate?

See Our Used VMCs

A robot can pick a part off a cart, set it in a vise and close the machine door. What it cannot do is turn the vise handle. That one manual step is why workholding builders are redesigning fixtures, vises and pallets for robots instead of wrenches, and why the fixture now decides whether a used VMC can run unattended.

Every vise on your floor has a handle, and every one of those handles assumes a person is standing there. You drop the part on the parallels, snug it, give it the last firm pull and hit cycle start. The handle is so ordinary nobody thinks of it as a design decision. It is one, and it was made for a machinist, not a machine.

That assumption is what is changing. The fixture is being redesigned around the thing that will load it.

The Robot Can Load the Part. It Cannot Turn the Handle.

Robot demand keeps spreading beyond the auto plants. The Association for Advancing Automation reported 17,995 robots ordered in North America in the first half of 2026, worth $1.166 billion, with metals orders up 18% year over year in the second quarter and non-automotive customers making up 56% of units ordered.

But a robot arm that can pick and place a part is only half of a working cell. The part still has to be located and clamped the same way every cycle, with no one there to check it. Jeffrey Wills of SCHUNK USA put it plainly to Advanced Manufacturing: "Automation is becoming more and more accessible, and buying the robot is the easy part."

Today's Machining World made the same point from the vise side in March 2026: "if your CNC workholding still requires a human hand to turn a handle, your CNC automation journey stops before it even begins." The handle we covered in our Kurt vise Machining Monday works because a person applies it. A robot needs something else.

Palletize the Work, Not Just the Machine

The through-line in automation-ready workholding is the pallet. Instead of building each setup on the machine table, the vise or fixture sits on a pallet that locks into a zero-point system on the table. The setup is built off the machine, and the pallet drops into the same position every time.

SCHUNK lists its VERO-S NSE3 modules with repeat accuracy under 0.005 mm. They run on standard 6 bar shop air, keep full pull-down force even if pressure drops, and include monitoring for the open and locked positions so an automated cell can confirm the pallet is clamped before it cuts. SCHUNK pitches the system for production "from batch size 1." Jergens lists its compact zero-point modules at under 0.02 mm (0.0008 inch) repeatability, with mechanical locking and pneumatic unlocking, and calls them well suited for light-duty automation.

The vise rides on top. SCHUNK's KONTEC KSC-F is built for palletizing systems and automated loading, mounts directly to the VERO-S interface and comes in three sizes matched to 320, 400 and 500 mm pallets. That stack, a vise on a pallet on a zero-point module, is the basic building block of an automated cell.

Powered Clamping Replaces the Hand Crank

The second change is the clamp itself. Pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators close the jaws on a signal instead of a wrench. Today's Machining World's case for pneumatic vises comes down to consistency: the vise clamps with the same force every cycle, which takes operator fatigue and feel out of the equation.

The same thinking shows up across the builders. HWR showed its INOFlex VF-A chucks at IMTS 2026, which it says were "developed specifically for the optimization of automation on milling machines" and use hydraulic actuation for fast, precise workpiece transfer. Midaco's robot-ready pallet changer uses a hydraulic docking system so the workholding stays clamped and charged through the cycle without cable management to the pallet.

It reaches the toolholder too. SCHUNK's TENDO E compact hydraulic expansion toolholder lists run-out and repeat accuracy of 0.003 mm or better and tool changes within seconds without peripheral equipment, which keeps the tool side of a cell as repeatable as the work side.

What the Fixture Has to Do Without You

A machinist does several jobs at the vise without thinking about them. You feel the part seat on the parallels. You know how hard to pull the handle for that material. You blow the chips off the jaws before the next part goes in. You notice when something is not right. An unattended fixture has to do all of that on its own, and the newer designs are built around exactly those jobs.

Confirming the clamp. SCHUNK builds open and locked position monitoring into the VERO-S NSE3 so the control can confirm the pallet is clamped before the spindle starts, the job a person does by looking.

Holding when something fails. SCHUNK says the NSE3 keeps full pull-down force even if air pressure drops, through a form-fit lock. Gimbel Automation, maker of the pneumatic AutoVise covered by Today's Machining World, says its vise keeps 50% of its clamping force on a complete loss of air.

Clearing chips. SCHUNK's KSC-F has lateral drainage slots for coolant and chip removal, because nobody is standing there with an air gun between parts.

Same force, every time. Powered clamping takes feel out of the cycle. The hundredth part is clamped the same way as the first, on the night shift with the lights off.

None of these are new ideas to a good machinist. What is new is that they are being built into the fixture instead of left to the person running it.

Resell CNC Take

Often the machine is not what keeps a shop from running unattended. The setup is. A used VMC with a zero-point plate, a set of pallets and a powered vise is closer to a working cell than a brand-new machine with a hand-crank vise on the table.

The Cell Is Built Around the Pallet

Once the work lives on pallets, the loader only has to move pallets. That is how the big systems are built. EROWA lists its Robot Dynamic loaders for pallets up to 500 kg and 800 x 800 x 500 mm, with rack or rotary magazines holding from a few dozen to several hundred pallets and up to 12 machines from different builders in one cell. System 3R lists its WorkPartner 1+ at 10 to 252 pallets and up to 100 kg, serving two machines, and supports a long list of pallet systems including Macro, Matrix and Delphin.

At the other end of the scale, Midaco's robot-ready automatic pallet changer is built for VMCs. Its pallets run from 22 x 15 inches up to 64 x 31 inches, and a cobot loads parts onto a pallet from carts or a conveyor on either side of the machine while the spindle cuts. Midaco says it creates hours of unattended machining time.

We covered the pallet as a production tool in our Next Shift on multi-pallet machining and what it takes to earn unattended hours in Lights Out Mandate. The workholding is where both start.

Start Small, Then Add the Robot

None of this has to arrive at once. Wills describes quick-change pallet systems as something that starts by reducing manual setup time and can evolve into pallet or vise loading automation. That is the practical path for most shops:

First, a zero-point plate. Fixtures and vises go on pallets, and the next job is set up off the machine while the current one runs.

Then, powered clamping. A pneumatic or hydraulic vise closes the same way every cycle and can be triggered by the control.

Then, a loader. A cobot, a pallet changer or a pallet system moves the work, because the fixture no longer needs a hand.

Each step cuts setup time on its own, before the next one is bought. By the time the robot arrives, the hard part is already done.

What It Means for Used Machines

This is where used equipment comes in. Automation-ready workholding mounts on the machine table, and a pallet changer like Midaco's is built to be added to a CNC Vertical Machining Center. The fixture, not the age of the machine, decides whether the cell works.

If you are buying a used machine to automate, check the table size and load rating against the pallet system you plan to use, the air or hydraulic supply for powered clamping, whether the control can send and receive clamp signals and whether the machine has or can take an automatic door. Our Next Shift on the used-robot wave covers the other half of the cell, and our Next Shift on output per operator covers why fewer hands is the point.

The Next Shift

The vise handle is not going away. Plenty of work will always be set up by hand, one part at a time, by someone who knows what a good clamp feels like. But the fixtures on the newest automated floors are being designed for the machine that loads them, and the shops that get there first will be the ones that changed the workholding before they bought the robot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is automation-ready workholding?

Workholding designed so a robot or pallet changer can load and clamp work without a person. It usually combines a zero-point pallet system, which locates pallets and fixtures to a repeatable position, with powered clamping that closes on a signal instead of a hand crank.

What is a zero-point clamping system?

A set of clamping modules mounted on the machine table that grip pull studs on a pallet, vise or fixture and pull it down to the same position every time. SCHUNK lists repeat accuracy under 0.005 mm for its VERO-S NSE3 modules, which unlock pneumatically at 6 bar and hold full pull-down force even if air pressure drops. Jergens lists under 0.02 mm (0.0008 inch) for its compact zero-point modules.

Why can't a robot use a standard machine vise?

A standard vise is closed by turning a handle, and a robot arm is not built to apply and repeat that torque. Powered vises, pneumatic, hydraulic or electric, close on a signal with the same force every cycle. As Today's Machining World put it, if your workholding still needs a human hand to turn a handle, the automation stops there.

Can you add a pallet changer to an existing VMC?

Yes. Midaco sells a robot or cobot ready automatic pallet changer for VMCs, with pallets from 22 x 15 inches up to 64 x 31 inches. A cobot loads parts onto the pallet outside the machine while the spindle cuts, and a hydraulic docking system keeps the workholding clamped through the cycle.

Do you need a robot to benefit from zero-point workholding?

No. SCHUNK's Jeffrey Wills says quick-change pallet systems start by reducing manual setup time and can evolve into pallet or vise loading automation. A shop can set up the next job on a pallet off the machine today and add a robot later.

How big can automated pallet systems get?

EROWA lists its Robot Dynamic loaders for pallets up to 500 kg and 800 x 800 x 500 mm, with magazines holding from a few dozen to several hundred pallets and up to 12 machines in one cell. System 3R lists its WorkPartner 1+ at 10 to 252 pallets, up to 100 kg, serving two machines.

Is robot demand growing in metalworking?

The Association for Advancing Automation reported 17,995 robots ordered in North America in the first half of 2026, worth $1.166 billion. Metals orders rose 18% year over year in the second quarter, and non-automotive customers made up 56% of units ordered.

What should you check on a used machine you plan to automate?

Check table size and load against the pallet system you plan to use, shop air or hydraulic supply for powered clamping, whether the control can send and receive clamp signals, and whether the machine has or can take an automatic door. Then size the workholding to the machine, not the other way around.
