Bystronic: The Glass Company That Sold the Glass and Kept the Name

Most brand histories are a straight line. A company makes a thing, gets good at it, makes more of it. Bystronic's is not. The company that puts fiber lasers on shop floors across North America spent its first twenty years cutting and handling glass, and the business it was named for is not part of it anymore. Understanding how that happened explains more about the company than any spec sheet will.

It Started in Glass

Bystronic Maschinen AG was founded in 1964 in Bützberg, a small town in the Swiss canton of Bern. The company's own account is that the name comes from its three founders, Byland, Schneider and Trösch.

The business was flat glass. Machines for cutting it, handling it, and assembling it into insulating units, the kind of equipment that ends up behind every window in a commercial building. That is a real industry with real engineering problems, and it is also a completely different world from sheet metal.

Except that it is not, quite. Both businesses are about taking a large flat sheet of brittle or stiff material, cutting shapes out of it accurately, and moving the pieces around without damaging them. Nesting, handling, breakage, edge quality, throughput. The problems rhyme. That is the thread that makes the rest of this story make sense rather than read as a company that lost the plot.

1984, Five Hundred Watts

Bystronic shipped its first laser cutting system in 1984. It was called the BYLAS and it put out 500 watts.

For scale, the machines in your shop today start around 3 kilowatts and Bystronic's fiber line runs to 30. The first one had less power than a decent microwave oven. That is not a criticism, it is the point: in 1984 the question was whether an industrial laser could cut metal reliably in a production environment at all, and 500 watts was enough to prove the answer was yes.

What followed shows a company that understood the laser was a platform and not a product. Bystronic Laser AG was founded as a dedicated operation at Niederönz in 1986. In 1988 came two things at once: BYJET, a waterjet cutting machine, and BYSOFT, nesting software that ran on a PC. Nesting software on a PC in 1988, which was early for a machine tool builder to treat programming as part of its own product rather than someone else's problem.

The BYSTAR 3015 in 1992 was the commercial breakthrough, and the BYSPRINT 3015 in 1996 pushed machine dynamics hard enough to be pitched as an alternative to punching, which was the incumbent process it needed to displace.

Bending Came by Acquisition

Cutting a blank is half a fabrication job. The other half is bending it, and Bystronic did not build that capability, it bought it. In 1997 the company acquired Hämmerle of Zofingen and entered the press brake business.

That matters to a used buyer for a practical reason. The bending line has a separate engineering lineage from the cutting line, and the two were joined by a transaction rather than grown from one root. It does not make the press brakes worse, and the Xpert and Xact families are well regarded. It does mean you should evaluate a used Bystronic press brake as a press brake, on its own merits and its own service history, rather than assuming the laser reputation carries over intact.

Cut, bend, automate, and the software to sequence all three. By the late 1990s Bystronic had assembled the full fabrication workflow, half of it invented in house and half of it acquired. That combination is the actual product, and it is why the automation and software matter as much as the machine does.

The Glass Went and the Name Stayed

Conzzeta AG, a Swiss industrial holding company, took ownership of Bystronic in 1994 and held it for the next twenty-seven years. Under that structure the glass business and the metal business ran as separate segments of the same parent.

Then the metal side outgrew the glass side, and the holding company did the unsentimental thing. On January 25, 2019, Conzzeta announced it was selling the Glass Processing segment, the business the whole enterprise had started as in 1964, to Glaston Corporation of Finland for 68 million euros. The deal was expected to close by the end of the first quarter that year.

Fifty-five years after a Swiss company began making machines to cut flat glass, the glass was sold off and the name went with the lasers.

The Subsidiary That Became the Parent

The last step is the one people find hard to believe.

On April 21, 2021, Conzzeta AG, the holding company that had owned Bystronic since 1994, changed its own name to Bystronic AG. Trading under the new name began on the SIX Swiss Exchange on May 3, 2021.

The division did not get spun out. The parent renamed itself after the division. That is a very rare corporate outcome and it tells you something a balance sheet cannot: by 2021 the holding company had concluded there was no version of itself worth keeping that was not the sheet metal business.

For a buyer, the practical read is stability of focus. This is not a conglomerate that might get bored of lasers next quarter. Lasers are the entire company, and the market knows it, which is a real input into how a used Bystronic holds value.

The Lineup in Shop Language

The automation families are worth more attention than they usually get. Automation and workflow integration were the dominant themes on the floor at IMTS 2026, and a used Bystronic laser that comes with a ByTrans or a ByTower is a materially different asset from the same machine standing alone.

U.S. Presence and Support

Bystronic Inc. runs North and South American operations from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, in the Chicago suburbs. Globally the company operates more than 40 locations and serves customers in more than 30 countries through its own subsidiaries plus a dealer and agent network.

For used equipment this is the question that decides everything, more so on a laser than on almost any other machine. A laser is not a casting with a motor on it. It is an optical system with consumables, a resonator or fiber source, a cutting head with lenses and nozzles, an assist gas system, and a control that has to be supported. Parts availability and factory service access are not a nice extra on a used fiber laser, they are the difference between an asset and a very heavy paperweight.

Confirm before you buy: is the specific machine generation still supported, are cutting head consumables still stocked, and can the control still be serviced. Ask those three questions about the exact model and year, not about the brand.

How Bystronic Compares to Trumpf, Amada and Prima Power

In fiber laser cutting and press brakes, the set a buyer actually shops is Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic, Prima Power, Mazak Optonics and a growing field of Chinese builders. We are not going to rank them on price, because on the used market the machine's generation, hours, source power and whether it comes with automation move the number far more than the badge does.

What is specific to Bystronic is how early and how deliberately the workflow was assembled. Cutting since 1984, waterjet and nesting software since 1988, bending since 1997, and automation built around all of it. Trumpf and Amada offer comparably complete stacks, so this is not a point of difference so much as a statement of category: Bystronic belongs in that group, and a buyer weighing the three is choosing between full-workflow builders rather than between a system and a collection of machines.

The Swiss engineering reputation is real and it is priced in, on the new market and the used one. That cuts both ways for a buyer: you pay for it going in, and you get it back on the other side.

Why a Used Bystronic Holds Value

Three reasons, and one honest caveat.

Brand recognition is global and the Swiss engineering reputation travels, which matters because the buyer pool for a used fiber laser is not just your region. Machines move.

The company is now entirely focused on this equipment. After the 2019 glass sale and the 2021 renaming, there is no other division for attention or investment to go to, and buyers can see that.

And the automation attaches. A laser with a tower and a load and unload system is a production cell, and cells hold value better than standalone machines because replacing the whole arrangement costs far more than replacing one machine.

The caveat is fiber. The shift from CO2 to fiber was a genuine technology break, not an incremental step, and it hit the residual value of CO2 machines hard. Fiber is faster on thin material, cheaper to run, and needs far less optical maintenance. A used CO2 Bystronic can be a legitimate buy at the right number for the right work, but price it as the older technology it is, and go in knowing what consumables and resonator service will cost you.

What to Check When Buying a Used Bystronic

On a fiber laser: source hours, which is the single most important number and the analogue of spindle hours on a machining center. Cutting head condition, including protective glass, lenses and nozzle. Chiller condition and service history. Assist gas plumbing. Whether the machine holds edge quality across the full sheet rather than just near the origin, which you find out by cutting a test sheet, not by looking at one. And the control generation and whether it is still supported.

On a press brake: ram repeatability, crowning system function, backgauge accuracy and repeatability through the full stroke, tooling condition and what tooling is included, which is often a larger share of the value than buyers expect. Check the safety system, since guarding regulations have moved and an older machine may need work to satisfy a current inspection.

On automation: cycle the tower or load system through a full sequence repeatedly rather than once. Confirm the software licenses transfer, which is a specific question to ask in writing and a common source of unpleasant surprises after delivery.

Resell CNC Take

On a laser, ask about support before you ask about price. A worn machining center is still a machining center, but a fiber laser whose control generation has gone unsupported or whose head consumables are hard to source becomes expensive in a hurry. Get the model, the year and the source hours, then confirm with the factory that all three are still serviceable. Do that first and the rest of the negotiation is straightforward.
