Used CNC Machine Blog: Buying Guides, Machine Reviews & Shop Floor Insights

More than 200 years of combined experience buying, selling, and appraising used CNC equipment across our team. That depth shows up here: practical buying guides, deep dives on specific machines in our Meet the Machine series, manufacturing history and expertise in Machining Monday, and straight talk about the used CNC market in The Next Shift. Written for the people who run machine shops.

If you run parts today, you know the worst number in the building is the scrap rate. Now imagine your scrap part is a cannon, your only inspection method is firing it with a double charge, and a bad casting does not get quietly set aside. It explodes. That was the daily reality of the iron plantations that armed the Revolution, and it is one of the most direct ancestors of the modern machine shop.

Everyone learns the midnight ride. Almost no one learns what Paul Revere did for the next forty years, which is the part that should matter most to anyone who makes things for a living. The ride was a single night in 1775. The rest of his life was a running experiment in manufacturing that tracks the exact moment America stopped being a country of craftsmen and started becoming a country of manufacturers.

A lot of shops live in the space between a manual knee mill and a full production CNC. They do repair work, one-offs, tooling, and short runs, and they need a machine an old-school machinist can crank by hand one minute and run as a CNC the next. Milltronics built its name on exactly that machine: an American-made mill or lathe with a control flexible enough to run three ways, manual, teach, or full CNC, so the shop is never forced to choose between the handwheel and the program.

The machine heard the chatter and changed the cut before you could reach for the feed override. A sensor caught the vibration, the control dropped into a different set of conditions, the noise stopped, and the surface came out clean. Nobody touched a dial. That is not a concept machine, it is a feature shipping on controls today, and it points at something bigger.

For a shop that lives on one-offs, prototypes, and small batches, the bottleneck is often not the cutting, it is the programming. Send every job out to a CAM seat and back and the machine sits waiting. Hurco built its whole identity on closing that gap, putting a control on the machine that a machinist can program right at the spindle, conversationally, in the time it used to take just to set up the post. That idea, conversational programming, is one Hurco helped pioneer, and it still defines the brand.

When the part is a length of pipe, a long shaft, or a big-bore fitting, most turning centers are the wrong machine. A small chucker cannot pass the bar, a multi-tasking center is expensive overkill, and a manual flat-bed lathe is slow and only as accurate as the operator. The Mazak M-5 was built for exactly that gap: a long, heavy flat-bed lathe with a big spindle bore, programmed through Mazatrol at the machine, so a shop can run large and long work accurately without a CAM seat and without tying up a master machinist for a shift.

Most shops build a part by moving it from machine to machine: turn it on a lathe, move it to a mill, send it out for a second operation, and eat the time and the stack-up of errors at every handoff. Mazak built its modern identity on erasing those handoffs. Put the turning, the milling, and the finishing in one machine, hold the part once, and a finished component comes off complete. That idea, which Mazak calls Done In One, is why the brand sits at the center of so many shops that compete on complex parts.

Before the imported machining center became cheap and before Haas hit full stride, a generation of American job shops bought their first CNC mill from one company. Fadal built a machine that a small shop could actually afford, repair, and keep running, and it sold so many of them that the VMC 4020 became a kind of standard issue across the country. Walk into a shop that has been cutting metal since the 1990s and there is a good chance a Fadal is still in the corner, still making parts.

Big turning is usually a choice between two bad fits. A full production CNC lathe is fast but wants long runs and a programmer, which is overkill for the one-off shaft or the batch of five. A manual flat-bed lathe is flexible but slow and only as accurate as the hands on it. The Weiler E90 refuses that choice. It is a heavy, big-bore, long-bed German lathe that an operator programs at the machine through guided cycles, so a shop can chuck a large, long, expensive part and turn it accurately without writing a line of G-code or babysitting a handwheel.

For most of CNC history, a real machining center was a major capital decision, priced and supported like one. Haas changed the math. Gene Haas set out to build a CNC machine that an ordinary shop could actually afford, made in the United States, supported by a dealer network in every region, and run with a control a machinist could learn fast. That combination did not just sell machines, it put CNC into tens of thousands of small shops, tool rooms, and classrooms that had been priced out, and it reshaped who gets to own a machining center.

Most shops hit the wall of their machining envelope before they hit the wall of their budget. A 40 by 20 inch table covers a lot of work, until a long fixture plate, a big mold base, or a weldment shows up and suddenly the job has to go out. The Fadal VMC 6030 was the answer for thousands of American shops: five feet of X travel and a heavy table, at a price and a simplicity a job shop could actually live with. It is the machine that let a small shop say yes to the big part.

Most machine tool builders assemble. They buy castings, spindles, ballscrews, and ways from suppliers and bolt them into a frame. Kitamura does the opposite: it builds nearly every major component of its machines itself, then has a person take a scraper to the mating surfaces by hand to get a fit that grinding alone cannot reach. That sounds old-fashioned until you see what it buys, machines that hold geometric accuracy for decades, which is exactly the trait a used buyer is paying for.

If you learned to cut metal on a manual mill with a DRO bolted to the side, this one is for you. You turned the handwheels, but you watched the numbers. You trusted the glass more than the dials, and you were right to. That little display did more than save you from counting turns: it carried a whole generation of machinists across the line between the hand-cranked era and the digital one.

Most lathes grip a part by one end and reach out to cut it, and the farther the tool gets from the chuck, the more the part flexes and the tolerance walks. A Swiss-type lathe refuses that compromise. It supports the bar in a guide bushing and cuts within a hair of that support, so a long, thin, complex part stays rigid exactly where the tool is working. Star Micronics built its name on that principle, first for the watch industry that needed tiny precise parts, then for the medical, aerospace, and electronics shops that inherited the same standard.

Most builders sell a fab shop one machine and leave the rest of the floor to somebody else. Trumpf sells the floor. From the laser source that cuts the blank, to the punch that forms it, to the brake that bends it, to the cell that welds it, Trumpf builds the machine for nearly every station a sheet metal part passes through, and it builds the laser inside many of its competitors' machines too.

You have seen the footage. A factory floor in the dark, no people, no light, no air conditioning, and robots quietly building more robots through the night. FANUC has run plants like this since 2001, with lines that go unsupervised for as long as thirty days at a stretch. So shops reach the obvious conclusion: the future is robots, buy the cell and the night shift takes care of itself. This Next Shift looks at why that is exactly backwards.

Most builders ask you to choose between speed and accuracy. Mikron built its name refusing to. The Swiss approach was never about removing the most metal in the least time. It was about removing metal fast enough to be profitable while holding tolerances and finish tight enough that the part comes off the machine nearly finished. That is a harder problem, and it is the one Mikron has chased for decades, first for watchmakers measuring in microns, then for the mold makers and medical shops who inherited the same standards.

Most people hear "sales job" and picture a script, a quota, and a phone that never stops ringing. The phone part is true. The rest misses what the role really is. At a used CNC machinery dealership, a Sales Account Manager sits in the middle of a real transaction between two businesses: a shop that needs a machine to take on more work, and a shop that has a machine sitting idle and wants to turn it back into cash. The job is connecting those two sides and getting the deal across the line.

For most of your career, quality lived in a different room. You ran the part, shut the door, and carried it down the hall to a climate-controlled space with a granite table, a probe arm, and a person whose whole job was telling you whether the last two hours were worth anything. You waited for the queue. You waited for the report. And often enough, you found out the part was scrap an hour after the spindle had already moved on to the next one.

Not every shop needs a 5-axis machine or a turn-mill center. A lot of money gets made running brackets, plates, fixtures, and production parts on a dependable 3-axis vertical that holds tolerance, takes a cut, and does not break the bank. That is the entire job of the DMG Mori CMX 1100 V: the value-line workhorse, DMG Mori build quality and a worldwide service network without paying flagship money for capability you will not use.

For decades, real CNC milling meant a real CNC budget: a machine that needed three-phase power, a forklift, and a five-figure deposit before it cut a chip. Tormach was built to break that wall. The idea was a machine that an engineer, a teacher, a prototyper, or a one-person shop could put on single-phase power in a garage and use to cut actual aluminum and steel, not foam and plastic. That is the Personal CNC, and Tormach created the category around it.

Most industrial robots are bought with a fence around them. They are fast, strong, blind to the people nearby, and they live inside a cage for a reason. Universal Robots built a business on the opposite idea: an arm that senses force, stops when it touches something it should not, and works at a bench next to an operator without a guard. That one decision created an entire product category and changed how a small shop thinks about automation, because the cobot does not need a robot engineer and a safety cell to earn its keep.

Somewhere in a Georgia warehouse right now, a two-legged robot named Digit is picking up a plastic tote, walking it across the floor, and setting it down. It has done this more than 100,000 times. It works the full shift, takes no breaks, and bills by the hour under a robots-as-a-service contract.

The badge on the machine says DMG MORI. The machine itself is the product of two engineering traditions that spent the better part of a century competing on opposite sides of the world. One is German, built on tool-room milling precision that traces back to a Munich camera-shutter shop and a Bielefeld locksmith. The other is Japanese, built on production turning rigidity that made Mori Seiki one of the most respected lathe builders alive. When a shop owner bids on a used NLX lathe or a used DMU 5-axis, they are buying a piece of one of those two lineages, now sold under a single name.

Walk the floor of a sheet metal shop running enclosures, brackets, chassis, or contract fabrication work, and there is a strong chance the brake doing the precision bending is an Amada HG. Often the HG-1003. Often with an operator who trusts it to hit the same angle on part one and part four hundred without re-checking every piece. That trust is not loyalty to a badge. It is the result of one engineering decision: the HG-1003 is built so the ram returns to exactly the same depth on every stroke, and in air bending, ram depth is the bend angle.
